Item Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Drug Abuse and Drug Addiction in Kwara Central Senatorial District(European Journal of Health and Biology Education, 2020-12) Alabi, Hafsat Imam; Bello, Ganiyu; Sulaiman, Musa MohammedThe development of a nation depends greatly on the mental alertness of its citizens especially the youth. Realization of this development might be invisible, if the current trends of drug use and addiction persist, hence the need to assess senior school students knowledge of drug abuse and addiction, four other specific purposes were addressed in the study. A descriptive research of the survey type was adopted. The random sampling technique was used to select 304 students that participated in the study. One of the researchers developed an instrument titled Knowledge of Drug Abuse and Addiction (KODAA) and an adapted drug avoidance self-efficacy instruments were used to source for data. The reliability coefficient of KODAA was 0.76 using the Spear-man brown statistic. Four research questions with corresponding hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Findings from the study revealed that gender had no influence on students’ knowledge of drug abuse and addiction. However, a significance difference existed between (i) school type and (ii) self-efficacy and students’ knowledge of drug abuse and addiction. It was, therefore, concluded that senior school students in Kwara central senatorial district have similar knowledge of drug use and addiction. These poor performances have been linked to quality and quantity of instructions received by students and particularly the use of laboratory facilities to enhance effective learning. This study was therefore conducted to investigate the availability and level of use of laboratory facilities in teaching and learning of biology in secondary schools in Ilorin, Kwara State , Nigeria. Being a descriptive study of a survey type, the sample frame for the study consisted of 12 (public and private) secondary schools in Ilorin, Kwara State. The main instrument for the study was a researcher designed questionnaire which captured statement on availability and effective utilization of materials considered relevant for meaningful learning of biology. Of all the recommended facilities as contained in the checklist obtained from West African Examination Councils (WAEC), fifty (50) basic facilities were investigated in this study. The findings of the study revealed that few of the facilities investigated were available in the schools. Hence, it was concluded that basic facilities were largely not available, where available not properly utilized. Based on the finding, it was recommended that adequate use of instructional materials, particularly laboratory facilities that could enhance students learning in secondary schools be provided and utilizedItem Effect of Sequencing of topics on senior school students genetics achievement in Ilorin metropolis(College of Education, Al- Hikmah University, 2017-06) Alabi, Hafsat Imam; Olorundare, Adekunle Solomon; Bello, Ganiyu; Abimbola, Isaac OlakanmiThis study explored the effect of sequencing of topics on senior school students’ achievement in genetics in Ilorin, Nigeria. The researchers developed, validated and administered a 20-items short questions tagged Biology Achievement Test in Genetics (BATG) on 107 senior school students. The BATG was used as a pretest and post-test to measure the equivalent of the groups prior to the commencement of the treatment and students’ gains after the instruction respectively. A quasi- experimental design was adopted, and mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-test was used to test the formulated hypotheses. The study found that there was no significant difference in the achievement of students taught genetics using the researchers structured order and those taught with officially prescribed order. The study also found that there was no significant difference in the achievement of male and female students taught genetics using the researchers structured order. It was recommended that concept in genetic could be taught independently as learning of one concept does not affect the other; and that, both male and female students should be given equal consideration as far as genetics teaching is concerned.Item Gender, text structure and senior school students achievement in genetics(Department of Science Education, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria, 2019-06) Alabi, Hafsat Imam; Abimbola, Isaac OlakanmiThe poor achievement of students in genetics knowledge could be ascribed to inappropriate manner of structuring genetics instruction given to students. This study investigated gender, text structure and senior school students’ achievement in genetics. A quasi- experimental design involving pretest, posttest, non-randomized control and non-equivalent group design was adopted. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 239 students that participated in the study. The t-test and Analysis of ANCOVA statistics were used for the analysis. Findings indicated that there was: (i) a significant difference in the achievement of students taught genetics using different text structures at p < 0.05, F(2, 238) = 15.11, (ii) no significant difference in the achievement of male and female students taught genetics using concept map at p > 0.05; t = 0.62 among others. Hence, this study investigated pre-service teachers’ attitudes and efficacy towards inclusive education among pre-service science education students in the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive research of the survey type and a sample of 297 respondents were involved. Three research questions and two hypotheses were raised to guide this study. The research instrument entitled Questionnaire on students’ attitude towards inclusive education adapted from Kielblock (2018) was utilized in gathering data for the study. The reliability of the instrument was observed to be 0.74 using PPMC statistics. The research questions were answered using frequency count and percentages while hypotheses were tested using t-test statistics at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings from the study revealed that the majority (72.1%) of the respondents are aware of inclusive education policy in Nigeria. Also, 59.9% of the respondents held a negative attitude towards inclusive education while 47.5% of them have low efficacy towards teaching in an inclusive classroom. Furthermore, it was revealed that gender does not significantly influence students’ attitudes and efficacy towards inclusive education. Consequently, it is almost impossible for individuals who are e-illiterate to survive in the emerging smart cities and e-societies, in general. Sustainable development in any nation now rests largely on the level of mastery and use of ICT, as well as, the degree to which citizens are e-literate. The task of developing human potentials needed to power sustainable socioeconomic development as well as producing e-literate citizens, is a core function of the education industry. Here in lies the significance of education, especially teacher education in the achievement of sustainable development goals. This paper therefore, addresses the role of STEAM teacher education in the emerging smart cities, e- societies, and sustainable development goals. The concepts of smart cities, e-societies, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and STEAM teacher education were discussed in the paper. Literature is awash with arguments in favour of M-learning in the realization of the core mandate of the education system. This study, therefore, examines the perceptions of the science teachers on integration of M-Learning into science class instructions in Kwara State, Nigeria. One hundred and twenty-nine science teachers from 34 public and 27 private senior secondary schools participated in the study. Stratified and purposive sampling techniques were used to select the schools and the teachers, respectively. Aresearcher-designed questionnaire titled, “Teachers’ Perceptions of M-learning” (TPML) with a reliability coefficient of 0.85, was used for gathering data. Data were analyzed using the t-test statistical tool, and findings from the study revealed that the participating teachers had high perceptions of M-learning and were at the preparation stage of integrating it into class lessons. It was concluded that teachers had favorable perceptions of M-learning and were in vantage position to use M-learning to leverage students’ achievement. Hence, the need for its proper structuring for easy comprehension by the students. The effectiveness of text structure on students’ proper understanding had been widely reported in literature, hence, this study investigated score levels, text structures and senior secondary school students' achievement in genetics. Specifically, the study assessed the: (i) variation in the achievement of students taught using different text structures (ii) interaction effects of text structures and score levels on senior school students’ achievement in genetics among others. A quasi experimental design of pretest, posttest, non-equivalent, and non-randomized control group was adopted. A total of 239 students purposively selected took part in the study. ANCOVA was used to analysed the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. Findings indicated that there was (i) a statistically significant difference in the achievement of students exposed to different text structure i.e., F (2, 238) = 15.11 at p < 0.05; (ii) no statistically significant difference in the interaction effects of text structure and score level. The implication of the finding is that the two structured texts were useful for improving senior school students’ achievement in genetics. This study therefore investigated teachers views on introduction and implementation of inclusive education in senior secondary schools in Oyo, Nigeria. The study was a descriptive research of a survey type. A total of 270 senior schools teachers from six Local Government in Oyo State were randomly selected as sample for the study. Researcher designed questionnaire was used to collect data. Four research questions and two hypotheses were raised and generated to guide the study. The four research questions were answered using mead and standard deviation while the hypotheses were tested using t-test and ANOVA. The study revealed that teachers had positive views of inclusive education(mean =3.0). Teachers perceived inadequate knowledge about inclusive education, inadequate resources required for inclusion, inadequate in-service training for teachers and emphasis on syllabus coverage as barriers to implementation of inclusive education (mean= 2.90). Also, there was no significance difference on the views of teachers on inclusive education based on gender t (258)= 1.44 and teaching experience F (3,256) =1.39. Based on the findings from the study, it was recommended that teachers should be adequately trained on the effective implementation on the inclusive education since thy already have positive views of the programme, this can be achieved through capacity buildingItem The status of human and material resources used in teaching biology in teaching in Ilorin, Kwara State(Department of Maritime Management Technology, Owerri Nigeria, 2017-07) Jimoh, Taibat; Alabi, Hafsat Imam; Bello, GaniyuThe study explored the status of human and material resources used in teaching biology in public schools in Ilorin. A descriptive survey method was adopted. All senior school students in Ilorin constituted the population, out of which 20 secondary schools were randomly selected. A checklist tagged Inventory of Resources for Teaching Science (IVRTS) was used for data collection. The data were analyzed using frequency count and percentages. The findings revealed a wide range of biology apparatus, equipment, reagents, charts, models, slides and specimens. However, many schools are characterized with inadequate resources and the available ones are not frequently utilized by the teachers. The study recommends that government should employ adequate professional qualified science teachers and laboratory personnel and that the untrained teachers should be mandated to go for professional training; it was also recommended that unavailable materials should be improvised.Item Text structure: A tool for effective biology instruction and learning(Department of Vocational Education University of Uyo, 2019-09-21) Alabi, Hafsat Imam; Abimbola, Isaac OlakanmiThe significant role of biology to the functioning of various systems of our body, as well as, the need to widening its scope through integration of biology with other subjects as was suggested in realization of sustainable development goals, make it a vital subject that every student must study and apply the knowledge when the need arises. It is therefore desirable that students are exposed to a well-structured, and detailed contents so as to enable them learn everything they need to learn, for proper knowledge demonstration. This paper focuses on how genetics content could be structured using logical prose to raise awareness about how to structure contents for effective instruction. The process involved in such structure was also described. In an attempt to do that, this article examined the topic under the subheadings: introduction, theoretical bases of text structure pattern, meaning and nature of logical prose structure, application of logical prose to biology instruction. A detailed exposition of its application in biology instruction is presented. Lastly, the paper recommended that teachers should utilized logical prose in structuring difficult concepts in biology and science in general. It was also recommended that text book author should utilize logical prose in structuring their instructions.
