Item Correlation between Continuous Assessment and Students' Performance in Islamic Studies.(Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science. C5 Plumbon, Banguntapan, Yogyakarta, 55198, Indonesia, 2020) Abdur-Rafiu, Jamiu; Ajidagba, U. A.; Rafiu, M.K.This study investigated the correlation between continuous assessment scores and Islamic Studies students’ performance in WASSCE and NECO Examinations in Ilorin, Nigeria. The instruments used were the copy of cumulative continuous assessment scores for three consecutive years (2011-2013) in Islamic Studies; (ii) the 2011-2013 Islamic Studies may/June SSCE computerized result sheets sent to each school by WAEC and NECO. The results of students were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) and regression. The findings showed that: (i) Students’ performance in Islamic Studies in NECO and WASSCE of the years under study (2011-2013) is fluctuating. (ii). Significant relationship exists between students’ continuous assessment scores and their performance in Islamic Studies in SSCE conducted by NECO. (iii). There is a significant relationship between students’ continuous assessment scores and their performance in Islamic Studies in WASSCE. (iv). There is a significant correlation among the school type of Students, their continuous assessment scores and their performance in Islamic Studies. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that there is a need to encourage Islamic Studies teachers in both public and private senior secondary schools to attach importance to the proper and regular conduct of continuous assessments.Item Effect of Information and Communication Technology on Senior School Islamic Studies Students’ Achievement in Fiqh in Ilorin, Nigeria.(The Department of Religious and Cultural Studies, Akwa Ibom State University, Obio-Akpa, Nigeria., 2020-01-01) Abdur-Rafiu, Jamiu; Aliyu, Yunus; Lawal, O. GaniyuThis study investigated the effect of Information and Communication Technology on Senior School Islamic Studies Students achievement in Fiqh in Ilorin, Nigeria. It examined the significant differences in the post-test performance scores of students taught using Information and Communication Technology tools (videotape) and those taught using conventional classroom instruction. The research design that was adopted for this study is the Quasi-experimental design. The sample consisted of 104 Secondary School (SS II) Students drawn from two equivalent secondary schools within Ilorin metropolis. The Islamic Religious Studies Performance Test (IRSPT) was administered to the students as pre-test and post-test. The results of the students were analysesd using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The finding shows that the students taught using videotaped instruction performed significantly better than their counterparts taught using the normal classroom instruction, and that gender has no influence on students’ performance in Fiqh aspect of Islamic Religious Studies when videotape instruction was used. Based on the finding of the study, it was recommended among others that Islamic Religious Studies teachers should be resourceful enough to look for relevant videotape programmes that can be used to enhance their teaching so that behavioural objectives set for instruction can be achieved. Seminars, Workshops, and in-service training should be organised for teachers to enable them acquire the necessary skills and also update their knowledge about the development and proper use of instructional materials for classroom instruction. School administration and government agencies should support Islamic Religious Studies teachers by sponsoring them to professional conferences and workshops regularly to develop their skills in instructional materials development.Item Historical Development of Religious Studies Education in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Prospects.(The Faculty of Arts, Akwa Ibom State University, Obio-Akpa, Nigeria, 2018) Goka, Mpigi Muele; Abdur-Rafiu, JamiuThe history of development of religion and religious studies is as long as history of the existence of man on earth. Hardly the history of a particular cultural group or a certain nation been told without reference been made to their spiritual aspect of live. The spirituality in people’s culture however depicts religiosity. However, in the contemporary societies, it appears that little or no interest is being given to religious studies. Thus, this study is carried out to examine the development of religious studies (Christian /Islamic Studies) in Nigeria.In doing so, both historical and analytical methods were employed. The researchers relied on primary and secondary sources of data. The data are subjected to critical analysis in other arrive at tangible conclusions.It was concluded that in spite of the unattractive status enjoyed by Religious Studies under the auspices of Nigerian education system, Religious Studies remain significant channels for inculcation of moral values. Owing to the prospects of Religious Studies, it is recommended that there is a strong need to rise to the challenges of Religious Studies and create an enabling atmosphere for effective teaching and learning of both Christian and Islamic Religious Studies.Item HOME BACKGROUND AND SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ISLAMIC STUDIES IN OYO NORTH, NIGERIA(Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia 43600 UKM Bangi, Selangor Darul Ehsan MALAYSIA, 2021) Abdur-Rafiu, Jamiu; Ajidagba, U.A.; Azeez, H. B.The role played by home as an agent of civilization could not be overemphasized. Home is a determining factor in any child’s behaviour and thus influences his academic performance. Hence, this study examined home background and secondary school students’ academic performance in Islamic Studies in Oyo North, Nigeria. The study was a descriptive research of a survey type, stratified sampling technique was used to select 500 respondents. A researcher-designed questionnaire and Performance Test were used to elicit information from the respondents. Mean, standard deviation and chi-square were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there was a significant influence of home background on secondary school students’ academic performance in Islamic studies; there was a significant effect of parents’ level of education on secondary school students’ academic performance; there was a significant effect of parents’ level of occupation on secondary school students’ academic performance; there was a significant influence of parental care and commitment on secondary school students’ academic performance; it was concluded that home status, parental educational background, parents’ occupation, school type, home supports for children’s education, parental care and commitment have a significant influence on secondary school students’ academic performance. It was recommended that parents and guardians should endeavour to play their parental roles to ensure good upbringing of their children. Islamic Studies teachers should take cognizance of the various backgrounds of their students in the classroom thereby employing methods and techniques of teaching that would cater for those background differencesItem Influence of Parental Educational and Occupational Backgrounds on Academic Performance of Female Muslim Students in Ilorin, Nigeria.(The Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education and Extension Services, Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria, 2015-06-01) Aliyu, Yunus; Ajidagba, Uthman Abdul Rahman; Abdur-Rafiu, JamiuABSTRACT This study investigated the influence of parental educational and occupational background on the performance of female Muslim students in Ilorin. A descriptive survey was adopted. While purposive sampling procedure was used to select six secondary schools across the three local governments area in Ilorin. In all, 300 female Muslim students were selected using simple random sampling technique. The instruments used for data collection were a questionnaire and students JSSCE Examination Result. Findings of this study showed that Muslim female students’ performance in the selected subjects (English, Mathematics, Islamic Studies, Integrated Science and Social Studies) at Upper Basic School is encouraging. Also, the null hypothesis which stated that there is no significant difference in the Muslim students’ performance based on the educational qualification of the parents was rejected. Also, the null hypotheses two which stated that there is no significant difference in Muslim female students’ performance based on the occupational status of the parents was also rejected. It was also found that there is a positive relationship between parental involvement and Muslim female students’ performance. Prominent among the educational programmes in Nigeria is Universal Basic Education (UBE) which was launched by the Federal Government with the purpose of availing all Nigerian children of school age opportunity to basic education. Among the remarkable steps taken by the Federal Government of Nigeria within the purview of the UBE programme is the establishment of Almajiri schools with the purpose of integrating the Almajiri pupils in the UBE programe. Thus, attempt was made in this paper to present an overview of the Integrated (UBE) Almajiri Education programme with a view to revealing its relevance in the implementation of UBE Programme. Alarmingly, the group attributes itself to Islam and some people may think the claim of Boko Haram is correct. This research was however carried out to investigate the religious violence in Nigeria with emphasis on Boko Haram insurgents. Analytical method was employed for the research. Also, the study relied on the information gathered through print and electronic media. The study tried to make juxtaposition between Islamic tenets and Boko Haram dispositions. It was however revealed that the claims and terror activities of Boko Haram insurgents are not congruent with the principles and teachings of Islam. Necessary recommendations were made in accordance with the findings of the study. The study adopted descriptive method and a questionnaire was used to elicit responses from the respondents. Three research questions were raised and answered in the study. The respondents' opinions to the questionnaire items were used to answer the research questions while frequency counts and percentage distribution were used to analyse the data obtained. The result indicated that translation motivates students to learn Islamic Studies and eventually leads to effective assimilation of Islamic Studies concepts. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that provision should be made for more translations of Qur'an, Hadith and other sources of Islamic Studies.Item Teachers' Perception of the potentials of Religious Education in Curbing Cultism among Secondary School Students in Ilorin, Nigeria.(The Faculty of Arts, Akwa Ibom State University, Obio-Akpa, Nigeria., 2020-10) Abdur-Rafiu, Jamiu; Ajidagba, Uthman Abdul Rahman; Ismail, T. D.This study examined teachers’ perception of the potentials of religious education in curbing cultism among secondary school students in Ilorin on the basis of school type, gender, school proprietorship and subject taught. Stratified sampling technique was used to select 400 teachers from 10 selected schools in Ilorin South. Questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents. Four hypotheses were tested with the use of t-test statistical analysis Four hypotheses were postulated and tested with the use of t-test statistical analysis all at 0.05 level of significant. From data analysis, it was evident that the general perception of teachers on the potentials of religious education in curbing cultism among secondary school students was positive. Although there exist differences in the perceptions of teachers based gender, school type and subject taught, all the respondents believed that religious education has the potentials to curb cultism among secondary school students. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that the teaching of religious subjects should be promoted in the schools so as to curb cultism. Religious education should also be made compulsory for all students. Teachers of Religious Studies in collaboration with school authorities need to organize constant symposia on the menace of cultism for students.Item Teachers’ Perception on the Effectiveness of Methods of Teaching Islamic Studies in North-Central, Nigeria.
