The Abuse of Pastoral Authority in some Churches in Nigeria Today
(College of Humanities and Social Sciences,Kampala International University,Uganda, 2018) Oyetade, Michael
This paper is a study of the role that spiritual leaders are to play in the lives of believers and the extent to which Christian religious leaders have abused authority invested into their hands over the years. Authority which is a vital subject for churches today has also become controversial among Bible believers and churches have been torn apart. This old time deception has dogged the footsteps of the old time religion. The major findings were that: Religion or belief that should help man to deal with problems of human life that are significant, persistent, and intolerable has now become the sole problem man is having. Instead of finding fulfillment in the household of the faith, members become bound by fear, frustration, indoctrination, and manipulative mind control that have made their pursuit of God an endless drudgery punctuated by a driven and legalistic lifestyle. Churches should be sanctuaries not prisons. Faith should be the ultimate freedom not the ultimate trap. Throughout this paper, researcher discussed abuse of pastoral authority largely in the biblical context. Therefore, the abusive practices and principles we traced was limited to Christianity.

A Comparative Study of Yoruba and Biblical Concept of Children Upbringing
(Chridamel Publishing House, 2014) Oyetade, Michael
The concept of children upbringing in the Yoruba traditional religion and biblical view is attended by multifarious perspectives. Children upbringing in the Yoruba tradition is perceived from the concept of omoluabi which is the end product of Yoruba education with the aim to foster good character in the individual and to make him a useful member of the community; while the biblical view also aims at producing the total man who is cared for physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. The research shews that biblical concept is a rider to Yoruba concept of children upbringing. The finding reveals that an omoluabi is a correct man; the only thing that he lacks is the faith in Christ. Methodology for the paper includes historical, sociological with interview and participant observation as tools of research.

    Eschatological Salvation In Hebrews 1:5-2:5
(Department of Religions, University of llorin, 2013) Oyetade, Michael
Salvation which is an indispensable element in all religions, is provided in one way in both OT and NT, and also rooted in grace, faith and sacrifice. This same salvation has past, present and future dimensions. The eschatology which is from two Greek words- ἔσχατος and λόγία means a study of last things which future aspect of salvation addresses. Methodologies adopted in this paper were historical and exegetical. The historical method was used in order to reconstruct the past both in biblical times and in the 21st century Church. The exegetical method was for a comprehensive examination of both the content and the context to enhance better interpretation of the relevant text. Data were gathered through secondary sources in which consultations were made through published works and the internet. It has been established in this paper that eschatology is essential to salvation and that without the completion or consummation of the eschatological prophesies salvation is not complete. By implication therefore, Christians are warned against loosing the future salvation by a careless inattention to the contexts of Hebrews 9:28 or practice in daily life, a text which focuses both on Christ’s death and return. Therefore, the eschatological connection with salvation is incontrovertible.

An Exegetical Interpretation of the Greek Language in 2 Timothy 2:15 with Reference to Σπουδάζω (Study)
    (UNILORIN PRESS, 2013) Oyetade, Michael
Σπουδάζω as used by Pau in 2 Timothy 2:15 has been variously translated by biblical interpreters. Therefore through lexico-semantics analysis which reveals , its root-words and word-stems and the various possible semantic categories created by the human mind, this paper claims that this word "study" in this passage does not mean to pursue knowledge by reading. Rather, it is the Greek verb "σπουδάζω," which means "make haste...to exert oneself, endeavour, and give difference". It involves much more than just taking in knowledge. This verb which is in the second person singular aorist imperative mood refers to Timothy, the primary recipient of the Epistle. It can be safely classified as cohortative as this strongly suggests and expresses a positive and direct command. It should be understood as the gnomic kind, which states a general timeless fact or principle. As a direct command, it must be binding on all Biblical scholars as any other command in the Scripture. As a general principle it should be observed as any other Bible principle. Therefore, a principle which is also being directly commanded is doubly binding. The idea of gnomic aorist suggests a general principle. Here in this verse is a general and also a guiding principle for believers in Christ.

An Exegetical Study of 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 and its Relevance to Redeemed Christian Church of God Women in Nigeria
    (UNILORIN PRESS, 2019) Oyetade, Michael
The study provided an exegetical study of 1Corinthians 14:34-35 as a premise for the examination of Αἱ γυναῖκες ὑμῶν ἐν ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις σιγάτωσαν· ‘let your women keep silence in the churches’and its relevance to Redeemed Christian Church of God Women in Nigeria. The objective of this paper was to examine the text in its original Greek language. Again, the work attempts an exegetical study of 1Corinthians 14:34-35 for clear understanding of the meaning, application and implications of terminologies related to ‘let your women keep silence in the churches. Furthermore, this paper explores views of Biblical Scholars on 1Corinthians 14:34-35, because it is of central importance in this paper. Methodologies adopted were exegetical, historical and sociological. The exegetical method facilitated a comprehensive examination of the content and context of the text under consideration to enhance precise interpretation. The historical method aided the reconstruction of the place of women in the church, while the sociological method was imperative for understanding the relevance of let your women keep silence in the churches and the society. The major findings were that: Silence in this passage is restricted to some certain period of time to avoid disturbance during church meeting, and that does not mean Apostle Paul is saying that they are not allowed to talk at all in the church or even in the society. However, Customary Practices across Nigeria hold that the man is the head of the house and has the absolute control in the decision making process of the home. This has contributed in no small measure to the repression of the aspirations of women, as permission would have to be taken from her ‘owner’ before she embarks on pursuing any endeavour in life. In conclusion, those who deny women the gender equality in fundamental human rights both in the church and the Nigerian society are doing a disservice to women and discouraging peaceful co-existence among adherents of the religion.

Relevance of the “Εγώ εἰμι” Sayings of Jesus in John’s Gospel to the Contemporary Church in Nigeria
(B Wright Integrated Publishers Ltd, 2017) Oyetade, Michael
“Εγώ εἰμι” phrases in the Gospel of John have been variously translated among the biblical scholars. The objective of the paper therefore, is to unearth the Εγώ εἰμι sayings of Jesus that represent a particular relationship of Jesus to the spiritual needs of humans: the bread that gives eternal life; their light in darkness, their entrance into security and fellowship, their guide and protector in life, their hope in death, their certainty in perplexity, and their source of vitality for productiveness. The methodologies used were exegetical and historical and sociological. Data were gathered through secondary and internet sources. Therefore through lexico-semantics analysis which reveals, its root-words and word-stems and the various possible semantic categories created by the human mind, this paper claims that in these phrases, Jesus used everyday physical things to illustrate deep spiritual truths about himself. The paper contends that the church cannot claim ignorant of Jesus and his work to the world of which He came to save. Neither can she give excuse whatsoever of her failure or fruitlessness.

(College of Humanities and Social Sciences,Kampala International University,Uganda, 2018) Oyetade, Michael
The study provided an exegetical study of Hebrews 13:4 as a premise for the examination of sanctity of marriage in the contemporary church in Nigeria. The objectives of this paper were to re-examine the prevalence of sexual perversion within marriage in the church. Again, the work attempts an exegetical study of Hebrews 13:4 for clear understanding of the meaning, application and implications of terminologies related to sanctity of marriage. Furthermore, this paper explores views of Biblical Scholars on Hebrews 13:4, because it is of central importance in this paper. Methodologies adopted were exegetical, historical and sociological. The exegetical method facilitated a comprehensive examination of the content and context of the text under consideration to enhance precise interpretation. The historical method aided the reconstruction of the place of marriage in the church, while the sociological method was imperative for understanding the implications of sanctity of marriage for members of the church and the society .The major findings were that: marriage is a gift from God for the blessing of men, women and children and for the good of society. However, in today’s society, the honour and sanctity of marriage is under constant attack. In the church, sexual immorality is a major problem evidenced by the high number of divorces among Christians and the frequent reports of sexual failings among preachers, elders, and other Christians. In conclusion, those who fail to honour marriage and maintain marital purity will come under the judgment of God.

Significance of Prayer Mountains in Biblical Narrative with Ref to Matt. 17:1-5
(Langaa Research & Publishing Common Initiative Group, 2018) Oyetade, Michael
Mountains and hills were particular places of interest in Israel. Due to their durability, height, and make-up, they often became natural places for refuge and security, territorial boundaries, and strategic military locations. Mountains have a significant symbolic value in the Bible, they first and foremost are part of the physical reality of the Bible. As a result, mountains and hills are mentioned over 500 times in the Bible. Mountains have a logical religious symbolism for biblical cultures since they are “closer to God” who is believed to dwell in the heavens. Every day on the news we hear about people in desperate need: victims of war, disease, crime, poverty, family and personal problems. For God’s people to rely on His strength, they answer to the call for Prayer Mountains Here And There. In the light of this observation, the objective of this paper is to unearth the significance of the Lord going into a mountain to pray and to find out if the Lord hears us better from the mountain top than else’s where. To achieve the set goal, the author used both exegetical, historical and sociological methods. Data were gathered through primary source, which is the Bible and secondary source in which related books and journals were consulted. The paper discovered that mountains are sites of transcendent spiritual experiences, encounters with God or appearances by God. They are places of special worship and meeting with God since they provided seclusion that is a retired, free from interruption, and fitted by impressiveness and grandeur to raise the thoughts to the God that had formed the high hills and the deep-shaded groves. In conclusion, though the transfiguration itself instructs us about the true nature of Jesus. But it also gives us a glimpse of what is yet to be, not only of His appearance in heaven, but our glorification as well.

Sound Health (ὑγιαίνω) In 3 John 2 and Its Implications for The 21st Century Pastors In Nigeria
(Eagle Prints, Ltd, 2016) Oyetade, Michael
In recent times, death rate of the gospel preachers has been reduced. There have been seminars, conferences; panel discussions and symposia on health talk both at local, national and international levels. 3 John 2 appears to be one of such health talk too in which it uses a Hellenistic epistolary greeting to Gaius “…be in sound health.” Methodologies adopted in this paper were historical, exegetical and sociological. Data were gathered through primary and secondary sources in which selected church leaders were interviewed, related works were consulted and internet source was also used. It has been established in this paper that poverty as well as illiteracy have negative effects on the health of pastors .The Bible talks about the health of both the soul as well as body, and that bodily and spiritual health complement each other. It is in this regard that the Greek word “ὑγιαίνω” through lexico-semantic analysis refers to "soundness" in faith, in charity, in patience, or doctrine. Here in the context of 3John 1:2 (ὑγιαίνω) refers to physical health. It means to be sound, to be well and to be in good health respectively.

A Study of Speaking In Tongues in Acts and 1 Corinthians and its Use and Abuse in some selected Contemporary Churches in Nigeria
(Department of Religious Studies, Federal University of Kashere, 2019) Oyetade, Michael
Pentecostals regard speaking in tongues as a manifestation of the baptism by the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 with the purpose to reach people with the gospel of Jesus Christ which is also the case in 1 Corinthians 12–14. The objective of this paper is to establish biblical position on speaking in tongues. Social scientific criticism theory was used. Data were gathered through primary and secondary sources. The paper found out that the gift is the same in both texts; however, the purpose of tongues in 1 Corinthians 12 is a gift used in the church and needing interpretation. Glossolalia is just one of the signs of an individual’s reception of the Holy Spirit, and its neither important than other gifts of the Holy Spirit, nor placing an individual higher spiritually than others who possess other gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Their multiple activities on earth have a number of facets. They often act as intermediaries between the people and their God.
