    An Appraisal of the Contributions of Christian Association of Nigeria on the Nigerian Society

    Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the umbrella body of Christians in Nigeria was founded in1976 as offshoot of Northern Christian Association. The Association has made significant impacts on Christianity in Nigeria. The undiminished quest for unity, which has characterized the activities of the Nigerian Church Council, is by no means geared towards eliminating discord and schism. It is noteworthy that CAN has been playing positive impacts in the Nigerian society, which consists of Christians and non-Christians. The purpose of this paper was to assess its impacts on Nigerian society. In doing this, historical, descriptive and empirical methods of research were adopted. It was discovered that the Association, has been playing positive impacts not only among Christians but to the nation at large through its various programmes such as youths and women empowerments, prayer conferences, advice, poverty alleviation programmes, leadership trainings and others. And that, its developmental programmes are future oriented and are not limited to Christians but to non-Christians in Nigeria. The paper concluded that, the impacts of the Christian Association of Nigeria on the Nigerian society are capable of enhancing sustainable development in Nigeria.

    Challenges Facing the Christ Apostolic Church Youth Fellowship (cacyof) in Ilorin Metropolis

    Challenges are constant phenomenon in life and particularly in every human organization. No organization is free from challenges at one time or the other. In other words, authoritarian system of leadership, insufficient funds, arrogant of human nature among others serves as an impediment to progress in any establishment. The youth are not only movers and shakers of the society but the future of the present is built in the youth. The paper examines the challenges facing the youth fellowship in Christ Apostolic Church. The youth fellowship is recognized with the name Christ Apostolic Church Youth Fellowship (CACYOF) and has been functioning in the church for over 50years. This paper aimed at providing solutions to the challenges in order to allow smooth and efficient running of the fellowship as a body in the Church. The paper adopted historical and empirical methods; primary sources like interviews were also used to facilitate adequate information on the views of youth, pastors and youth executives to determine the challenges and the solutions to the menace facing the fellowship. Some of the findings in this paper show that the age limit of youth in Christ Apostolic Church is 50years and the refusal of many members who are married to participate in the youth fellowship. It is also important to identify that financial constraint has. This paper suggested that the youth fellowship of the church should not be taken with levity, and proper concern to the growth of the body should be placed paramount.

    Christian Association of Nigeria and Nigerian Politics (1976-2019): An Overview

    Abstract Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the umbrella body of Christians in Nigeria was formed on 27th August, 1976; to serve as the mouthpiece of Christians and Church in Nigeria. It started due to the activities of Sardauna of Sokoto, politics, Northern hegemony and perceived plots to Islamize the Northern Nigeria. Christians in the Northern Nigeria formed Northern Christian Association (NCA) in 1964, which later flowered to Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). Lots of views have been expressed on the political activities of CAN, with various stands being made. Some people believed that CAN is a political establishment from inception, while some opposed this view. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to make an overview on CAN and Nigerian politics from its inception to 2018. Methods adopt in this paper are historical and empirical. The paper postulated that CAN cannot be underrated in Nigerian political settings. The paper, however concluded that CAN has been playing vital roles in Nigerian politics and recommends that it should maintain its roles as the voice of conscience in Nigeria politics.

    Christian Association of Nigeria's Distribution of Palliatives During Covid-19 Pandemic in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State

    Prior to the outbreak of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), poverty among members was one of the problems that the Church had to contend with. The pandemic (COVID-19) had negative effects on the Church, as it exposed her members to economic hardship. In order to prevent the spread of the disease, the Federal Government of Nigeria had to impose lockdown on certain States with high increase in the number of patients. The lockdown further compounded problems of members of congregation, as most of them least prepared for its effects. To this end, it became necessary for the government and corporate bodies to source for materials to cushion the effects of the lockdown on Nigerians. Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ilorin South Local Government Area Branch, also partook in the distribution of palliatives to its members, through the local government areas and neighbourhood branches. However, there seemed to be some misgivings over the distribution of the palliatives. The aim of this paper was to take a critical examination of the distribution of the palliatives by CAN in Ilorin South Local Government Area Kwara State, during the covid-19 pandemic. While its objectives were to: highlight how the palliatives were sourced for; assess how the distributions were coordinated; examine the challenges faced during the distributions and the effects of the palliatives on the beneficiaries and the Church. Methods adopted were descriptive and empirical. The findings of the paper showed that: the palliative materials were donated by good Samaritans and State government; the distributions started from the State Chapter to local government areas and ended at the neighbourhood branches; and; there were some misgivings on mode of distributions of the materials. The paper concluded by suggesting ways to distribute palliatives among Churches in transparent and well organized ways in the future

    The Contributions of Christian Association of Nigeria for Restructuring and Resource Control

    Christian Association of Nigeria, the umbrella body of Christian Church in Nigeria was formed on August 27, 1976, to serve as the mouthpiece of the church in Nigeria. However, many people only had the perception that the Association was formed to cater for the interests of Christian alone. The aim of this paper was to critically examine the contributions of CAN to the actualization of restructuring and resource control. Methods adopted in this paper included historical and phenomenological. The findings of this paper showed that restructuring and resource control have been causing problems and disunity among various tribes and religions in Nigeria; and that CAN, had also been lending its voice to the agitation by various interest and pressure groups. The paper concluded by suggesting ways by which the agitations can be achieved without shedding of blood and division.

    The Effects of Proliferation of Churches in Nigeria

    Proliferation of Churches has continued to become a challenging phenomenon in Nigeria. This is because, hardly would one pass through any major streets in Nigeria today, without finding churches established close to one another. This has been a challenging reality to the Nigerian society, as people conceive diverse views on the activities of these churches. To some, establishment of churches is a good development to the society as it helps to curb the social vices in the community. While others believe that many of these churches are fast becoming nuisances to the society. The society does not seem to accept the activities of some of these churches, many of them either fellowship in warehouses, classrooms, shops and other structures like uncompleted buildings and the residences of their founders, with few members. The aim of this paper was to examine the effects of these Churches on Christianity in Nigeria, while its objectives were to assess the activities of these churches and analyzed some of the effects on Christianity in Nigeria. It also interrogated some of the features of these churches. The paper adopted historical and empirical methods; primary sources like interviews were also used to enable us have adequate information on the views of people in order to determine the strength and weakness of these churches. Some of the findings of this paper showed that Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) could do little or nothing to checkmate the activities and excessiveness of these churches. The paper concluded by suggesting that these churches be checkmate to prevent them from becoming another form of societal vices instead of being a tool of societal development in Nigeria.

    The Impacts of Christian Association of Nigeria on the Development of Christian Youths in Nigeria

    Youths have been described as the strengths and beauties of the society, simply because they constitute about 65% of the occupants of a society. They can be called the backbones of the society because of their strength and agility. Every society tries to make adequate preparations for her youths, who are referred to as “the future” of the society. However, events in the last two decades showed that, most of the youths in our societies are incapacitated in a way or others. These were as a result of collapse in the economy and financial imbalance, caused by various acts of the ruling class and elites in the society. Most of the youths, that ought to be financially independent are not; due to various political and economic policies enacted by the ruling class. Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the umbrella body of Christian Churches in Nigeria, being a religious body which was formed to oversee the wellbeing of Christians in Nigeria has been at the forefront of ending the financial and economic incapacitations of the youths through its various programmes. This paper takes a critical look at the impacts of CAN to the development of youths in Nigeria. It also tries to assess the level to which these developmental programmes have helped the youths in solving most of their problems. Historical, descriptive and empirical methods are adopted in the paper. The findings of the paper shows CAN has introduced various developmental programmes for youths in Nigeria. It concluded by suggesting other ways by which developmental programmes can be used for social, political and economic development of youths in Nigeria.

    Issues, Challenges and Prospect of Christian Association of Nigeria

    The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) was founded in 1976 as an umbrella body of Churches in Nigeria. It was founded particularly as a response to securing religious peace, improving the interest of Christians in serious participation in public affairs. And more interesting is the fact that in the sequence of political appointments, there is always the underground network in an attempt to protect the interest of Christians. In point of fact, the role played in the development and growth of Christianity in Nigeria by CAN cannot be underestimated. Despite the impacts of the Association, there are some systemic challenges facing it. These challenges include: doctrinal differences, ethnic and denominational challenges, proliferation of churches, commercialization of Christianity among others. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to assess the challenges faced by CAN. As a result, the paper adopted historical, descriptive and analytical methods; employing primary and secondary sources as tools of getting information leading to the fact that the activities of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) are not without issues and challenges. The paper therefore postulates that in spite of its challenges the body will continue to represent and sensitize the Church on the need to unite. To this end, the paper concludes that CAN should not stop playing advisory roles to the government and enhance the need to improve Church growth in Nigeria.

    The Response of Christian Association of Nigeria to the Menace of Herdsmen Phenomenon

    The activities of killer herdsmen have turned to serious challenges in Nigeria. This has became worrisome as hardly would a day ends without news of several attacks perpetuated by these herdsmen. Initially, it was thought to be misunderstanding between farmers and herdsmen; but, of recent, it has taken another dimension with the attack being carried out against communities and Churches. These attacks, are in no doubt, having adverse effects on security as well as the religious activities of Nigeria, thus hindering our national development. The aim of this paper is to examine the response of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to the menace of these herdsmen dastardly acts; while the objectives of this paper are to: examine how the activities of these herdsmen affected the security and National development of Nigeria; take a critical assessment of the response of CAN to the menace of these killer herdsmen; and suggest ways through which solutions can be proffered to the threat that their activities had caused to the national development. Methods adopted for this paper were historical and empirical. While the findings of this paper showed that, the activities of killer herdsmen had taken a dangerous trend within the last few years. This had led to loss of lives and properties which included farmlands and places of worship. It has also affected the development of the nation economically; and that CAN has not been able to speak collectively against the activities of these killer herdsmen both, as it seems only few members of CAN were the only voices been heard, both at national and international levels. The paper concluded by suggesting ways through which threats caused by these herdsmen could be solved for the nation to have peace which can enhance development for Nigeria.
