Jaishankar., 2020-06) Isiaka, MonsuratThe danger of cybercrimes otherwise called yahoo-yahoo in Nigeria is growing at an alarming rate and has become a major criminal trend in the world. The unceasing public alertness about the activities of the perpetrators (yahoo boys) and the need for victory, survival and belief in African spiritual strength led to the adoption of spiritualism otherwise African insurance by the yahoo boys. However, with the combination of expertise and African insurance, the level of success of the yahoo boys in their criminal activities remains gloomy. This study therefore examines the success rate of yahoo boys when they combine African insurance with internet fraud. Holding on Merton strain theory, In-depth Interviews were used to generate qualitative data from eight respondents sampled through snowballing. Its use and application provide assistance to criminal justice professionals in the investigation of crimes, especially violent crimes. It is particularly of great value in solving crime cases, getting clues about crime suspects as well as discovering their locations. There are various manners and methods of generating profiles of criminals such as from scenes of crime, reports of victims and witnesses as well as the suspects themselves. Although these approaches are documented and widely applied in most developed countries, the approaches used in Nigeria are not known. Against this backdrop, this paper seeks to explore the approaches to generating criminal profiling applied by the Nigeria police and compare them with the ones used in developed countries. The study was inspired by routine activities theory. Top-cadre police officers were purposively sampled and interviewed. Results revealed that the approaches to generating criminal profiling employed in Nigeria are quite alien to the ones in advanced countries even though there appears to be a lack of documented literatures on them. These approaches are not known because there are no visible evidences of their application, particularly the lack of modern equipment, technology and trained personnel. Thus, the study recommends that the Nigerian government should invest more on technologies as well as regular training and retraining of police officers, provide functional database systems, fully-equipped forensic laboratories, advanced and sophisticated tools or equipment.Item Crime of the crime fighters: the involvement of the EFCC in aiding and perpetrating Cyber crime offences in Nigeria(Department of Criminology and Security Studies, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Nigeria., 2021-06) Isiaka, Monsurat; Ibrahim, Abdullahi, Kayode; Damola, Atolagbe Tuyosi; Adetoro, Mubaraq YemiThe study is a perception study. The Nigeria police occupy various locations especially on the highways where the officers check vehicles and drivers in relation to their duty of prevention and detection of crime. Many attempts at curbing the activities of the insurgents had proved difficult. This is evidenced in the statement of the former Nigeria Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, that “terrorism and terrorist groups could not be eliminated alone by the Military unless religious bodies and organisations in the country come to the forefront of the spiritual battle”. This statement can be related to the nature of the crisis against conventional war for which the military was trained. Moreover, there are tendencies for the traditional, religious, and economic factors responsible for the problem. These and many other factors have led some affected regions like Borno State to resort to local vigilante. Holding to the argument of Parsons that people do cooperate based on social order, which comes from their values and social actors that is based on voluntarism, this paper examines the effectiveness of local vigilante in combating insurgencies in Nigeria. However, throughout the country, the activities of the local vigilante towards community policing and social order may not be the technically most efficient. Still, their approach is necessary and appropriate in maintaining peace via the indigenous mechanisms of social control that may include African spiritualism. Therefore, the paper recommends a strong synergy between the conventional and nonconventional security organisations for comprehensive crime control and prevention in Nigeria.Item The Involvement of the Nigeria Police in Curbing Insurgency in Nigeria.(Department of Criminology and Security Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, 2023-03) Isiaka, Monsurat; Austin, Oladele; Ismail, Ayatullah, Nasirudeen; Abubakar, Abdulrahman; Hassan, Adijat KuburatThe 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria makes clear the makeup, organization, and operational oversight of the Nigeria Police Force. The preservation of human life and material goods is the main focus of this, among others. Currently, Nigeria is fighting an insurgency that has decimated several areas of the north-eastern region of the country. There is a paucity of research on the Nigeria Police Force's contribution to this conflict, despite the fact that the majority of studies have focused on how the Armed Forces have attempted to quell insurgency and terrorist activity. By highlighting the existence of certain of Nigeria's police special units like Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD), K9, Forensics, and Intelligence, a portion of their tasks can be comprehended. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the Nigerian police have helped to quell insurgency in that country. The finding reveals that the Nigeria Police are also involved in the war against insurgency. However, the lack of sophisticated equipment is a major impediment which has hindered the effectiveness of the force. The conclusion of this study recommends, among others, that the Nigerian government should enter stronger bilateral and multilateral relations with high technologically advanced nations to purchase highly sophisticated equipment to combat the insurgents. Similarly, government should share experience with those nations that have successfully fought the menace in their respective domains in order to learn the best tactics to deploy in combating the war.Item Masculinity, Police culture and Women representation in the Police Force in Kaduna State, Nigeria(Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria., 2015-12) Isiaka, Monsurat; Salawu, Bashiru; Muhammed, Awaisu HarunaThis paper presents the result of an empirical study on effect of masculinity on women representation and career development in the Nigeria Police Force using the Kaduna State Police Headquarter as the study centre. It was recommended that, Police Force needs to use more advance technology in carrying out duties so as to reduce the effect of masculinity on women in take and on them pursuing career in the Police Force.Item Misuse of Prescription Drugs as Cognitive Enhancement among Iranian University Students: Evidence from an Empirical Investigation(Rangsit University, 2019-12) Habeeb, Abdulrauf Salihu; Isiaka, Monsurat; Ibrahim, Abdullahi, Kayode; Balogun, Solomon ObasanjoMedications prescribed for the treatment of neurological disorders are also used for stimulating alertness and concentration, increasing working memory and improving cognitive performance in healthy individuals. A sample of 1,800 (graduate and undergraduate) students selected from 5 faculties in Allameh Tabataba’i University Tehran completed the questionnaires that included the demographic information and questions related to the research objectives. The findings indicated that the misuse of prescription stimulant drugs is widespread among students and that the need for success (to improved cognitive performance and boost academic grades) predicts the widespread.
