Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the prevalent rate of drug abuse and its impact on violent or aggressive behavior among the youths in Ilorin metropolis. Drug abuse is a social problem of serious consequences to the individual and the society at large. Different illicit drugs have been abused at different levels in all states of the nation. Most users of these drugs overindulge in dependence resulting from the withdrawal consequences thereby becoming “drug addict”. To achieve this, survey research design was adopted. Six hundred respondents were purposively selected from five local government area that constitute Ilorin metropolis. Questionnaire and in-depth interview techniques were used for data collection; while descriptive statistical techniques were employed to analyze the data that were generated through questionnaire. Also, content analysis techniques was used to analyze the qualitative data obtained. The results of the analysis clearly show that, the prevalent rate of drug abuse was excessively high; and there was a link between drug abuse and violent acts in Ilorin metropolis. Hence, this paper recommends drug addict rehabilitations (psychotherapy of the addicts) and Youth’s Empowerment Act that would aim at youth’s empowerment through job creation.
