Item Academic stress and social anxiety among undergraduates in University of Ilorin(Department of Human Kinetic and Health Education, Faculty of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, 2020-08) Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi Abdulqadir; Muhammed, Shuaib Abolakale; Oregbesan, LovePrevious studies have pointed out various ways in which university education predisposes students to psychological challenges such as anxiety, depression, stress and general poor health. Stress and social anxiety have been found to relate to diverse factors influencing academic performance and well-being of students. This study investigated academic stress and social anxiety among undergraduates of University of Ilorin. Descriptive survey was adopted to gather data for the study using academic stress and social anxiety scale. The instrument was validated by experts in the Department of Counsellor Education and its reliability was ascertained through the test re-test method. The reliability results of the two scales yielded 0.94 and 0.96 respectively. A total sample of four hundred and twenty (420) undergraduates participated in the study. The data obtained were analyzed using percentages. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-test were used to test the null hypotheses generated. Results indicated that larger percent of undergraduates in University of Ilorin reported high stress level. A significant proportion of the students experienced high level of social anxiety. Respondents differ in their expression of stress level on the bases of class level, mode of entry and type home. The level of social anxiety of undergraduates in the university is impacted by their age, gender, home type, study level and programme of study. It was recommended that University counsellors should take into consideration study level, mode of entry and type of home in designing and implementing stress management and social anxiety intervention programmes.Item Causes of Aggressive Behaviour among Undergraduate Athletes in Ilorin Metropolis(Anatolian Journal of Education, 2018-10) Muhammed, Shuaib AbolakaleAggressive behaviour among sport athletes is one the most common problem that has devastating effects on athlete’s career development. This study examined the causes of aggressive behavior among undergraduates’ athletes in Ilorin metropolis and also investigated the influence of moderating variables of age, gender and sport type on athletes’ aggressive behaviour. The research design adopted in this study was the descriptive survey. The population of the study comprised of all sport athletes in Ilorin metropolis. The respondents for the study were drawn using purposive sampling technique to select two hundred and fifty (250) athletes that participated in the study. Data was collected from the respondents with the use of the self-designed questionnaire tagged Causes of Aggressive Behaviour among Sport Athletes Questionnaire. That data obtained was analysed by using percentage, mean and ranking order analysis, Three-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The result of the study showed that sport athletes engaged in aggressive act when their friends are injured, when they are rough-handled, when they are bullied, when they feel threatened by their opponents, when their team complains about them. Results also revealed that there was no significant difference in the cause of aggressive behaviors among sport athletes in Ilorin metropolis based on age and gender, but a significant difference was found based on type of sport. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended among others that all athletes in Nigeria should be exposed to proper counselling to help them adjust better to their aggressive tendencies and also be more aware of the consequences of such actions to their career. They should also be educated on the adverse effect of aggressive behaviour.Item Causes of Nagging in Marriage as Expressed by Married Women in Oyo State, Nigeria(Journal of Issues and Practice in Education, 2016-06) Oniye, Abdulrasaq Olayinka; Bolu-Steve, F.N.; Muhammed, Shuaib Abolakale; Soyemi, Oluseyi SundayAbstract: Nagging in marriage is one of the peculiar characteristics that are common among married women and this can results into various problems among couples. from varying factors. This study investigated the causes of nagging in marriage as expressed by married women in Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. Proportional and stratified sampling techniques were used to draw a sample of 663 married women who participated in the study. The instrument used to obtain data was a researcher designed questionnaire tagged “Causes of Nagging Questionnaire (CNQ)”. Frequency count and percentage were used to analyze the demographic data of the respondents while all hypotheses were tested using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that nagging in marriage can be caused by lack of effective communication between couple, inability to tolerate individual differences, financial problem, disagreement on religious matters and unsatisfactory sexual relationship. The hypotheses tested revealed that there is no significant difference in the causes of nagging as expressed by married women on the bases of educational qualification, religion and length of years in marriage. Based on the findings of this study it was recommended that couples irrespective of age, educational qualification and gender should be encouraged to go for counselling before contracting marriage, marriage counsellors should educate their clients on the desirability of acquiring effective communication skills, in order to guard against nagging in their marriage.Item Dating Patterns of Undergraduates of Tertiary Institutions in Kwara State(Counselling Association of Nigeria, 2015) Okesina, Falilat Anike; Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi Abdulqadir; Muhammed, Shuaib AbolakaleDating is a major phenomenon in Nigerian tertiary institutions in which youth enter into many years before they contemplate on marriage. The paper investigated the dating patterns of undergraduates of tertiary institutions in Kwara State. A total of 640 undergraduates were selected using purposive sampling technique to select ten tertiary institutions for the study. Data were collected from the respondents using an instrument titled “Dating Patterns of Undergradutes’ Questionnaire” (DPUQ). The hypotheses generated were analysed using t-test statistics and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha levels. The findings of the study indicated that there was no significant difference in the dating patterns of the respondents on the basis of religion and school type. However, there was a significant difference on dating patterns on the basis of the age and gender. Recommendations were made on the desirability of establishing counseling centres in institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. This study examined the determinants of career choice among newly admitted undergraduates’ of University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The study also investigated whether variables of gender and age would influence respondents’ determinant of career choice. The research method adopted for this study was descriptive survey. The population of the study consisted of all newly admitted undergraduates in university of Ilorin. An instrument titled “Determinants of Career Choice Questionnaire (DCCQ)” was used to obtain data from 400 randomly selected respondents. The instrument was validated by lecturers in the Department of Counsellor Education and the reliability was ascertained using test re-test method and a coefficient of 0.80 was obtained when correlated. Percentages mean and rank order analysis, t-test and (ANOVA) were employed for analyzing the data gathered in the study. The study revealed that determinants of career choice of newly admitted undergraduate in University of Ilorin include influence of parents; school teacher/lecturer; and friends and personality match as well as self employment opportunities in the career among others. The study further revealed that there is a significant age and gender differences in the determinants of the career choice of respondents. The implication of this is that people oriented values have significant effect on individual respondent’s choice of career hence the need for a well organized pre-counselling programme for undergraduates as soon as they secure admission in to the university to assist them acquire necessary orientation. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that significant career influencers such as friend, parents, teachers/lecturers need to be equipped with correct career information through different media in order for them to guide students appropriately. Parents should also be encouraged to employ the assistance of professional career counsellors in helping their children to make intelligent career decisions irrespective of gender and age differences.Item Effectiveness of Rational-Emotive Behaviour Therapy in Reducing Bullying Behaviour among in-School Adolescents Based on Gender and Age(Journal of Science, Technology, Mathematics and Education (JOSTMED), 2016-03) Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi Abdulqadir; Muhammed, Shuaib Abolakale; Alwajud–Adewusi, Mariam B.Bullying behaviour is a deliberate, unprovoked, aggressive behaviour displayed repeatedly with the aim of harming or hurting others. It is characterised with imbalance of power (physical/psychological). This study investigated the effectiveness of Rational-Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) in the reduction of in-school adolescents bullying behaviour. REBT is a theory based on the assumption that human beings are born with the ability of rational thinking and constructive behaviour. The theory attributes bullying behaviour to the irrational aspects of in-school adolescents belief system formed in childhood. The research design adopted in the study is quasi experimental in nature using 2×2×2 factorial design. It is made up of two (2) row groups (one experimental and one control) and two column groups (age and gender). Instrument used in purposively selecting the participants in the study was Bullying Identification Questionnaire (BIQ). Perpetrators of bullying behaviour (i.e bullies only) were identified and participated in the study. REBT treatment procedure packages were administered to participants in the treatment group. It was revealed that REBT produced significant reduction in the bullying behaviour of in-school adolescents, mean difference was observed in the pre and post-test scores of participants in the treatment group. ANCOVA was used to test for significant reduction of bullying behaviour yielding F= 85.8, df (1, 47); gender and age had moderating effects on the reduction of bullying behaviour of in-school adolescents F (df=1,47)=34.2; F (df=1,47) =51.9, p<0.05 respectively. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors responsible for juvenile delinquency among secondary school students as expressed by teachers in Ilorin metropolis. Four moderating variables of paramount interest were gender, religion, highest educational attainment, and teaching experience. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and Juvenile Delinquency Questionnaire (JDQ) in relation to factors responsible for JD was used to obtain relevant information. The instrument was validated and the test re-test method was employed to determine its reliability which yielded a co-efficient of 0.83. Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 180 respondents for the study. Five (5) research questions were raised while four (4) null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha level. Percentage and weighted means were used to analyze the descriptive data while t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to test the formulated hypotheses at 0.05 alpha. The findings revealed that the major factors responsible for juvenile delinquency among secondary school students are inadequate parental love in the home; aiding and abetting crime for money and fame by religious leaders; inadequate monitoring of students by teachers; non provision of basic needs for children by parents among others. The findings also revealed that there were no significant differences in the factors responsible for juvenile delinquency among secondary school students as expressed by teachers based on gender, religion, highest educational attainment, and teaching experience. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others, that there should be proper planning and implementation of guidance programmes and interventions in order to minimize the factors responsible for juvenile delinquency. The paper investigated the grief reactions of bereaved spouses in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State. A total of 395 bereaved spouses were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected from the respondents using an instrument titled "Grief Reaction of Bereaved Spouses Questionnaire" (GRBSQ). The research questions raised were answered with percentages while the hypotheses generated were analysed using t-test statistics and three-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha level. The findings of the study indicated that (90.6%) of bereaved spouses in Kwara state have positive grief reactions, while 37 (9.4%) have negative grief reactions. The study further revealed significant differences in the grief reactions of bereaved spouses in Ilorin metropolis based on age at bereavement, nature of death and length of years of loss. Based on these findings, recommendations were made on the desirability of establishing counselling centres in governmental and non-governmental organisations aside from the conventional ones in schools and hospitals. The inability of health personnel to meet patients’ expectations may lead to poor consultation outcomes and patients’ dissatisfaction. The objective of this study is to investigate the health care expectations of out-patients of UITH, Nigeria and to examine the influence of gender and age on respondents’ views. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for this study was all out-patients in UITH, Nigeria. A total of 900 respondents were selected using a three-stage sampling procedure which comprised simple random sampling, purposive and systematic random sampling techniques. The instrument used for data collection was a self-designed questionnaire titled “Health Care Expectations Questionnaire’’. The validity of the questionnaire was established by Five experts in the Departments of Counsellor Education, Behavioral Sciences and Tests and Measurement, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined using split-half method and a correlation coefficient of 0.78 was obtained. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-test statistical tools were used to test the formulated hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The findings showed that the expectations of out-patients in teaching hospitals in Nigeria include functional equipment, appropriate treatment, appropriate care, efficient staff, clean environment, and friendly staff. Significant difference was found on the basis of age. The study concluded that government should provide modern equipment in hospitals through appropriate funding. The study investigated the impact of counselling practicum on trainees in University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of all student counsellors in the Department of Counsellor Education, University of Ilorin. The simple random sampling technique was used to select 250 respondents selected from both the full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programme. A researcher developed questionnaire tagged “Impact of Counselling Practicum Questionnaire (ICPQ)” was used to gather data from the respondents. The questionnaire was validated by lecturers in Counsellor Education Department University of Ilorin and was also subjected to reliability test using a Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation formula and a reliability coefficient of 0.68 was obtained. The data obtained were analysed with percentages, mean ranking and t-test statistic. The findings revealed that the counselling practicum has high impact on counsellor-trainees. For instance, it assists trainees to; develop self-confidence in relating with clients, learn how to apply counselling skills maximally, and discover their strengths as student counsellors. A significant difference was found on the impact of counselling practicum on trainees based on respondent’s level of education but no significant difference was found on the basis of gender. The implication is that trainees at different level need practicum experience to achieve professional development. It is recommended that undergraduate and postgraduate counsellor-trainees, irrespective of gender, should be assisted to develop requisite skills, ethics, and values of carrying out their professional roles optimally in the counselling profession.Item INFLUENCE OF VIDEO GAMES AND SOCIAL MEDIA ON SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ LEARNING AS EXPRESSED BY TEACHERS IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA(Journal of Science, Technology, Mathematics and Education (JOSTMED), 2020-09) Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi Abdulqadir; Muhammed, Shuaib Abolakale; Ayuba, Olawale Hammed; Salahu, Hamdalat AramideAdvancement in the scientific means of information transmission has extended the scope of human interactions. Studies have revealed mixed results regarding ICT impact on educational attainment; thus, this study investigated teachers’ views on video games and social media impacts on Nigerian’s secondary school students’ learning. Descriptive survey design was adopted. Multistage sampling procedure (comprising proportional, purposive, and simple random techniques) was employed to select 420 teachers across Kwara state. The instrument was content validated and a reliability coefficient of 0.83 was obtained using the Pearson Product Moment Coefficient Formula. Mean, rank order and t-test were employed for data analysis at 0.05 alpha levels. The finding showed that video games help to develop student’s mental ability, improve student’s memory and promotes students’ interest in academic activities. Also, social media enhances student personal reading and studying, assist students to get latest information and opportunity to communicate with colleagues on how to improve their studies. More so, there were no significant differences in the perception of respondents of different age and gender on the influence of video games on students’ learning. It can thus be concluded that that video games and social media constructively aid students’ knowledge acquisition. It was therefore recommended that learners should be encouraged by school counsellors to engage in utilisation of video games and social media to the benefit their knowledge advancement.Item PREVALENCE AND FORMS OF INTERNET ADDICTION AMONG YOUTHS IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA(Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2017) Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi Abdulqadir; Muhammed, Shuaib AbolakaleA contact with contemporary youth will depict the extent to which they are attached to mobile devices which they relied on for various day-to-day affair regardless of where they are. The extreme use of internet could lead to a disorder called internet addiction. This study examines the prevalence and forms of internet addiction among youths in Kwara state considering the influence of gender and age. A descriptive survey research method was employed for the study. A total of 378 students in three universities across the senatorial districts of Kwara state participated in the study. Data were collected by a three-part questionnaire. Inferential statistics of t-test and ANOVA were used for testing the hypotheses at 0.05 levels of significance. The results showed that 6.9% of the sample is severely addicted to internet while 30.7 % are prone to addiction. The forms of internet addiction among youths in Kwara are cyber-related addiction, computer addiction, Net compulsion and cyber sexual addiction in varying degree. There was significant age difference in the prevalence of internet addiction. Similarly, significant gender and age differences occurred in the forms of internet addiction.
