Item A THEORETICAL APPROACH TO MOTIVATION AND EMPLOYEE WELFARE IN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS IN NIGERIA(College of Social and Management Sciences Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji- Arakeji, Osun State, 2018) Akindele Iyiola TomilolaThe paper had a colossal look at the theoretical approach to the study of motivation and Employee Welfare in the public sector in Nigeria, The objectives are to implore the underpinning theories to motivation and employee welfare also to examine the role of theory of motivation and welfare on employees and organizational performance in the public sector. The paper is a position one and it implored achiever method through collection of data and information from library, internet, journals and text books for its methodology. The result showed that variables, indices of motivation such as financial incentives, fear. advancement, etc. are applicable to both public and private sectors of the economy. Also the paper established that theories of motivation if properly and adequately applied and monitored could enhance both employee and organizational performance. It was concluded that there is a thin line between the theory and practice of motivation in terms of applicability to work force. The study is based on the assumption that one of the primary objectives of the commercialization and privatization programme is the improvement of economic (productive and allocative) efficiency of enterprises. Empirically, this objective is best attained under a competitive market environment where prices are set equal to the MC of production. (The contestable market theory: Baund 1982). Some of these organisations did not devote their activities to the establishment of the democratic system alone, but their operations were also directed at alleviating the sufferings of the people by addressing social and economic problems such as health, education and youth empowerment, and good governance among others. They are the mouthpiece of the society. Therefore, this study analysed constraints of CSOs in influencing democratic governance in Nigeria. Twenty-one civil society organisations were used for the study which comprises of all the twelve pro- democracy and governance-oriented civil society organisations that registered with the Corporate Affairs Commissions and 9 purposively selected non-registered pro-democracy groups. The selection of the 9 pro-democracy groups was informed by their records in pro-democracy activities, national spread and exposure to national issues. In-depth interview, as well as focus group discussion, was used. The findings showed that despite the contribution of CSOs in facilitating, enthroning and sustaining democratic governance in Nigeria they are still faced with some constraints such as fund, corruption, government interference, identity and lack of cohesion in the performance of their duty. The study concluded that for the society to appreciate their performance better there is a need for CSOs to be more pro-active in their dealings.Item EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND PRODUCTIVITY IN THE NIGERIAN BREWERIES(Department of Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, 2019) Akindele Iyiola Tomilola; Ajayi Modupe OlayinkaThe paper examined the importance of communication to any organization. It explained further that for any organization, whether private or public, formal or informal, to successfully attain its set goals and objectives, effective communication is germane. Given the important role communication as the live wire of an organization with specific interest in the Nigerian Breweries. It also investigated the ineffective communication as a function of organizational disharmony. Finally, it ascertained the flow of communication in the organizational hierarchy. The study is a survey research using questionnaire to elicit information from the respondents. The study was carried out at the Nigerian Breweries Plc, lbadan. Relevant data were collected and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicated that communication is the live wire of an organisation and it has a bearing on the quantity of output. The study also reveals that lack of communication leads to industrial conflicts in an organisation. It was also found out that there exists good upward and effective downward communication within the hierarchy in the brewery. The study concluded that management must practice and apply communication methods effectively for the organization to move forward and to develop its potentials fully.Item EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION AND ORGANISATIONAL PERFORMANCE IN FOOD, BEVERAGE AND TOBACCO INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA(Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2017) Akindele Iyiola Tomilola; Ologunde Adedoyin Olusola; Ibikunle Titilayo DorisThis study identified the factors that influenced executive compensation in the selected fims within the Food, Beverage and Tobacco industry in Nigeria and examined factors that contributed organizational performance in the industry. It also assessed the influence of executive compensation on organizational performance in the industry. These were with the view to providing information on how executive compensation affected organisational performance. Primary and secondary data were used for this study. Primary data were collected through the administration of 56 copies of questionnaire to executives of eight purposively selected firms out of 30 quoted companies in the industry during the period of 2009-2013. The eight quoted companies were chosen due to their impressive growth in the food, beverage and tobacco industry with several years of operation in Nigeria. Stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting the 56 executives from the selected companies. The top executive, middle level and lower level staff were used for stratification. Secondary data were sourced from Nigeria Stock Exchange Factbook, Annual Reports and Financial Statements of selected firms, variables such as asset utilization, net profit margin, return on capital employed, and directors' emolument. Data collected were analyzed using binary logistic regression and two -stage least squares regression analysis. The results showed that five factors influenced executive compensation, out of whch only two were significant in the selected firms within the food, beverage and tobacco industry in Nigeria they are: years of experience (t= 2.93 1, p<0.05), take home packages (t = 2.638; p<0.05) while age (t = 0.916, p>0.05), qualification (t = 1.208, p>0.05) and department of works (1 = 1482, p>0.05) were not significant. The results also showed that the factors that led to organisational performance in the industry included asset utilization (t= 7.238, p<0.01) and returns on capital (= 2.391, p<0.05). Finally, the results showed that executive compensation (measured with director's emolument) had no significant influence on organisational performance (t=-1.245, p> 0.05). The study concluded that executive compensation in the food, beverage and tobacco industry had substantial effect on organisational profitability.Item IMPACT OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE ON JOB PERFORMANCE OF EMPLOYEES IN OBAFEM AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY ILE-IFE, NIGERIA(Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Maiduguri, 2019) Akindele Iyiola TomilolaThis study examined emotional intelligence as crucial human resource management ability in the workplace with a view to identifying the determinant factors of emotional intelligence and its effects on the performance of employees in the workplace. Data were collected using primary method of data collection through the administration of questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical tools such as simple percentages and linear regression. The study revealed that workers who are highly temperamental are not tolerant and are not able to build good working relationship and Workers who exhibit such traits are not able to perform well at work. However, workers who are flexible and easily adapt to changes perform better at work as well as those who are persistent in pursing goals despite obstacles and setback contribute a great deal to their performance. The study concluded that it is necessary for the management of Obafemi Awolowo University to emphasize the importance of having emotional intelligence skills for their workers because emotional intelligence is in no doubt a great impetus for performance.Item Impact of Performance Appraisal Strategy on Employee Productivity: Evidence from Selected Nigerian Banks(College of Management & Social Sciences Fountain University Osogbo, Nigeria, 2020) Akindele Iyiola Tomilola; Olatoye Oludare Adeolu; Oyekanmi Taiwo TaoheedMany organisations experience low productivity despite their acclaimed effective performance appraisal system. In Nigeria, many organisations, espccially banks are experiencing low productivity and performance due to ineffective appraisal system. This study, therefore, seeks to investigate the impact of performance appraisal strategy on employee performance with specific reference to selected Nigerian banks. Five banks were selected through purposive method. Judgmental sampling technique was also used to select Head of Operation, Accountant, Auditor, and Branch Manager from 5 branches of the selected banks in Ibadan metropolis, Oyo State, Nigeria. One hundred respondents served as sample size for the study. The data collection instrument for the study was structured questionnaire to elicit information. Simple percentage and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) were adopted for data analysis. Findings show that the overall assessment of performance appraisal in Nigerian banks has a significant impact on employee performance and also reveals that most Nigerian banks makes use of the ranking method to assess their staff. Consequently, the study recommends that bank authorities should not appraise the performance of employees based on the deposit target, but on their accomplished duties and responsibilities.Item Organizational Change Management and Performance in Insurance Industry in Nigeria(Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, Crawford University Igbesa, Ogun State, 2016) Akindele Iyiola Tomilola; Akindele Iyiola Richard; Bello Emmanue AnuoluwapoChange has become a very important phenomenon in our day-to-day business activities, people tend to resist change in order to maintain the statoscope, hence the need to critically look into it and how it affects business performance. The study is to determine the effects of organizational change on organizational performance before and after the change process, and to assess the attitude of employees towards change and lastly, identify ways to manage resistance to change in order to achieve the desired organizational results. Primary and secondary data were used for the survey. Primary data was collected using structured questionnaire, while secondary data were collected from the archives of the company. The population for the study was 343 employees of Staco Insurance Plc., and a sample of I17 employees was selected using the Slovin's formula. Analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics. The result revealed that changes generally have positive effects on performance judging from the three indices (finance F= 6.04. P< 0.026 df= 2, customer measures F=14.81, P< 0.07 df = 2. process measure F=4.34,p <0.014 df=2. The result further revealed that workers attitude to change was negative. It was also found out that how change idea is conceived and implemented and cushion resistance will automatically have impact on the rate of success. Results also showed that sources of resistance differ according to the scope of change. The study therefore concluded that nothing stand still in the world of business, as change is the only thing that is constant and managing a change process is as important as change itself. It was recommended that organizations should put in place a change transition committee saddled with the responsibilities of carefully drawing out change plans and effectively implementing the change. Change managers should also carefully manage the human side of change in order to avoid resistance using the appropriate change strategies, thus, enhancing overall performance of the organization.Item STAFF WELFARE AND INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN OSUN STATE CIVIL SERVICE OF NIGERIA(Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Administraion, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, 2010) Akindele Iyiola Tomilola; Akindele Iyiola RichardThe study examined the key issues in institutional development and workers' welfare in the Osun State civil service: identified and evaluated the existing welfare programmes in the state; investigated the extent to which existing welfare programmes affect institutional development in the service; and assessed the challenges confronting institutional development in the state. The study employed a descriptive survey method. Information was gathered from respondents through close-ended structured questionnaire and in-depth interview. The population of study was 1,605 employees drawn from the public service of Osun State which was stratified in to 13 ministries. Questionnaires were administered on a sample of 321 employees; 20% of the population. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that accountability (x = 20), leadership (x =18.35) and succession plans (x =16) were prominent issues involved in institutional development in Osun State. Pay system (x = 20.33) constituted the major welfare package for Osun State workers, followed by adequate motivation (x = 20.00) next was the provision of housing allowance (x=19.35), followed by training (X=18.19), health care facilities (x =18.13), and finally transportation (X=16.33).4lso, it was found that a single welfare package is not enough incentive to get the best out of civil servants in the State, but a combination of welfare packages. Comparative Analysis of Institutional Development and Workers' Welfare showed that there was a significant relationship between institutional development and workers welfare package in Osun State Civil Service. The study concluded that workers welfare is a necessary condition for eficiencv and effectiveness.Item THE CIVIL SERVICE AND CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES IN NIGERIA(Department of Public Administration, 2015) Ameen Abdullateef; Muhammad Mustapha Orire; Akindele Iyiola TomilolaCivil service is the government workforce that covers all the ministries and the departments of the state and people who work in them in the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes. It is against this background that the paper examines the contemporary challenges of civil service in Nigeria. It is relevant to stress that the Nigerian Civil Service has become so tolerant that a considerable number of civil servants get themselves involved in politics which in turn is making the Service lose its actual essence. The paper therefore concludes that challenges facing the Nigerian Civil Service are poor attitude to work by civil servants, poor remuneration, indiscipline, undue politicization/political interference, corruption, ineffective service delivery among others. Hence, it is recommended that government, as a matter of concern, should deploy ways in which civil servants can be properly remunerated and serious matters relating to bribery and corruption should be treated with high sense of responsibility and accountability.Item The Effect of Commuting and Workplace Environment on Employees' Productivity in Access and Skye Bank Plc.(College of Business and Social Sciences, Crawford university, Igbesa, Ogun State., 2017) Akindele Iyiola Tomilola; Akindele Iyiola Richard; Akinduro Foluke OmoyemijuThe study assessed the effect of commuting and work environment on employees' productivity using Access bank and Skye bank as case study. The study identified the major environmental factors that affected productivity; it examined the level of commuting coping measures to workplace, also, it determined the effect of commuting on workers' productivity and finally, identified the management techniques available in the workplace. The survey research was used to gather primary data through the use of structured questionnaire. A sample size of 130 respondents was selected using simple random sampling technique from the population which were staff of the financial institutions under study. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. The findings of the study showed that physical environmental factors such as furniture, lightening, air quality and noise level have effects on employees' productivity. Using the Pearson Product Correlation analytical tools, the study revealed that cost of commuting has no significant relationship with productivity. The study however, concluded that, the behavioural environmental factors which consist of fair treatment, meaningful recognition, interpersonal role of the supervisor, financial incentives have effects on employee's productivity. It was recommended that management should input well designed flexible working hours into their banking mode of operations, improve on the following measures such as transport allowance, car loans, and staff busses to cushion the trouble of commuting and finally, supervisors should develop interpersonal relationships with their subordinates.Item THE INTERACTIVE EFFECT OF WAGES AND SALARIES ADMINISTRATION ON WORKERS' PERFORMANCE IN NIGERIA(Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Management Sciences, university of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2017) Akindele Iyiola Tomilola; Akindele Iyiola Richard; Abdulkareem Abdulrazaq KayodeThe study investigates the effects of wages and salaries administration on workers' performances using MTN Communication as a case study. The paper examines the attitude of managements towards wages and salaries administration. It also investigates the relationship between wages and salaries increment and employees' satisfaction and finally deternmined the effect of wages and salary increment on the achievement of organizational goals. Data collected were from both primary and secondary sources. Questionnaires were administered to obtain the primary data. Analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics such as mean scores, frequency distribution, perctntages and chi-square test. The findings were that the attitude of managements towards wages and salaries administration was highly positive and supportive. Also, there was a direct relationship between wages and salaries increment and satisfactions: employees displayed satisfaction towards salary increment. Finally it was revealed that prompt payment of wages and salaries and increment as at when due leads to the achievement of organizational goals. There has been no indication in the literature of how the various types of gender cultures impact on one another, or whether there is one single most important type of gender culture which managers need to focus on to improve organizational effectiveness. This study empirically assesses the interactive impact of four types of gender cultures: glass ceiling,, gentle man's club, gender blind and women as gatekeeper The managerial implications of these findings are discussed.Item The role of gender and religion on women participation in decision making process in Nigeria(Departments of Accounting & finance and Business Administration Fountain University, Osogbo, Nigeria., 2020) Akindele Iyiola Tomilola; Dunmade Emmanuel OlaniyiGender equality has become one of the core global discussions nowadays in academic, business and politics; it has been perceived as a clear-cut catalyst for development. This study discussed the role of gender and religion on women participation in decision making process in Nigeria. It examined perception of male and female participation in decision making in the public service, and also determine the influence of religion on participation in decision making process. The population of the study was 9248 drawn from eight ministries among Osun State civil servants in Osogbo. It adopted multi-stage sampling technique in the process of selection and collection of data. The sample size was 354 respondents. Data collected were analysed using, independent "t" test, Anova and Multiple comparisons between the groups. The findings of the study showed that there is significant difference in the scores for males (x = 21.2, S.D= 3.15) and females scores X=20. 1, S.D= 1.69, t(198) = 3.26, P= 0.30. This indicated clearly that male respondents X-21.2 reported more favourably in participation in the decision making process than female respondents M- 20.10. Also, the study revealed that there was no statistically significant difference between Christianity, Islam and other religion in their participation in decision making process. F(2,197=0 404, P=0. 668, p>.05). The study concluded that to enhance gender equality, education should be used to empower female counterpart.
