Item Adjustment Strategies to Job Loss among Internally Displaced Persons in Abuja, Nigeria(Malaysian Association of Counselling (IPERKAMA), 2018-07) Adebayo, David O; Tajudin, Mohd N; Adebiyi, Damilola RInternal displacement is a growing menace in countries, particularly, sub-Sahara Africa. Affected persons are made to flee their shelters due to occurrences like armed conflicts, natural disasters or war. This study examined adjustment strategies to job losses among internally displaced persons in Abuja, Nigeria. A total of four hundred IDPs in Yimitu village, Waru District participated in the study. A self-designed questionnaire entitled “Adjustment Strategies of Internally Displaced Persons Questionnaire” was used for data collection. Four research questions and four null hypotheses were raised and tested respectively at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive statistics, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were employed for data analysis. Findings revealed that common adjustment strategies adopted by internally displaced persons included trading, accessing low interest loans either from banks or NGOs, group/collective ownership of business activities, acquisition of skills, as well as furthering of one’s education. There was significant difference in adjustment strategies between male and female IDPs. Recommendations include involving rehabilitation and career counsellors in the various programmes designed for assisting IDPs.Item Career Choice of Secondary School Students in Ilorin Metropolis(Journal of Capital Development in Behavioural Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Education, Lead City University, Ibadan, Nigeria., 2019-03) Odebode, Aminat A; Adebayo, David O; Jekayinfa, Oyeyemi J; Aburime, Aminat OThis study investigates the factors influencing career choices of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. It also examined the influence of gender, class level, religion and father’s educational status on the respondents’ expression. It employed a descriptive survey method. A total of 200 secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis were selected through simple random sampling technique. The participants responded to a researcher-designed questionnaire entitled ‘Factors Influencing Career Choice Questionnaire” (FICCQ). The validity of the instrument was done by a team of 5 experts from the Department of Counsellor Education, University of Ilorin. The reliability of the instrument was established using test retest reliability method which yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.61. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. For the demographic data, percentage was employed while t-test statistical tool was employed to test the four hypotheses at 5% level of significance. Results showed that the factors influencing career choice of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis are ease of access to job opportunity (X=3.50), job remuneration (X=3.48), career guidance from school counsellor (X=3.45), societal values on jobs (X=3.44) family line of work (X=3.25), their performance in school subjects (X=3.20) and intellectual capability that they possess (X=2.50) among other factors. Similarly, there was significant difference in the factors influencing career choice of secondary2 school students in Ilorin metropolis based on gender (p=0.01), class level(p=0.02), religion (p=0.00), and father’s educational status (p=0.01). It was thus recommended that students should liaise with school counsellors to fully explore the factors influencing their career choices. Counsellors should ensure that students are given orientation as they move from one class to another. This is to ensure that all students, irrespective of gender and religion are abreast of the factors influencing career choice.Item Caregivers’ Perception of the Consequences of Breast Cancer in Kwara State, Nigeria: Implications for Health Educators(Department of Education, University of Maiduguri, Nigeria, 2017-09) Odebode, Aminat A; Adebayo, David O; Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam BBreast cancer is one of the most common cancers and the highest leading cause of death among women. This study investigated the caregivers' perception of the consequences of breast cancer in Kwara State. Differences in the participants’ perception based on duration of care giving and level of education were also examined. This study employed a descriptive survey method. A sample of 100 women, who are caregivers, selected through purposive sampling participated in the participants in the study. A self-designed questionnaire titled Consequences of Breast Cancer Questionnaire,(CBCQ) was used for data collection. The validity of the instrument was done by experts in the Departments of Counsellor Education and Behavioural Science, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The reliability of the instrument was established using split-half reliability method and correlation coefficients of 0.62 was obtained. The data were analysed using frequency counts, percentages and means and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that caregivers perceived consequences of breast cancer to be depression, chronic pain, emotional distress and death. It was also revealed that there were no significant differences in the participants' perception of the consequences of breast cancer based on duration of care giving and level of education. Conclusion was drawn that the consequences of breast cancer are devastating therefore, health educators should train caregivers through organization of workshops, on how to handle the consequences of breast cancer, with the aim of helping women with breast cancer cope with the found consequences.Item Counselling Needs of Adolescents in Orphanages in Kebbi State, Nigeria(Department of Psychology and Education, University of Education, Winneba, Ghana., 2019-07) Bolu-Steve, Foluke N; Adebayo, David O; Omotosho, Joshua AThis study looked at the counselling needs of adolescent in orphanages. Descriptive survey method was used in this study. The target population of this study comprised of all adolescents in the orphanages in Kebbi State. Purposive sampling was used in selecting the three main orphanage homes in Kebbi State. The researcher also used Proportional sampling technique was used in selecting respondents from the three main orphanage homes in Kebbi State. Four hundred adolescent’s orphans were purposively selected for this study. Data gathered were analysed using frequency counts, percentages, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). All the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. Result of this study revealed that there was no significant difference in the counselling needs of adolescent orphans in orphanages based on gender, age, class level and religion. It was therefore recommended that the government should encourage caregivers to employ the services of professional counsellors inorphanage homes.Item Factors hindering counselling services among students with hearing impairment as expressed by guidance counsellors in Kwara State, Nigeria(Association of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria (APROCON), 2018-08) Adebayo, David O; Ajiboye, Samuel K; Fajonyomi, Mary GOne of the major responsibilities of professional counsellors is the provision of counselling service to every school child, irrespective of the physical challenges of such students. Studies have shown that students with hearing impairment in particular are faced with peculiar learning and social problems which require the attention of guidance counsellors. However, counsellors could encounter challenges in rendering adequate services to students with hearing impairment due to many factors. This study therefore investigated factors hindering counselling services among students with hearing impairment (H.I) as expressed by guidance counsellors in Kwara State, Nigeria. The descriptive survey method was adopted where a total of two hundred and fifteen respondents were purposively selected to participate in the study. Questionnaire entitled “Factors Hindering Counselling Service Questionnaire (FHCSQ)” was employed to gather data. The instrument possessed a reliability coefficient of 0.74 after being subjected to a test-re-test method and the Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistical procedure. The measure of central tendency (mean) and t-test statistical tools were used to analyse and test the research question and the three null hypotheses. The results revealed that counsellor-related factors were the most significant factors hindering provision of counselling services to students with hearing impairment. There was also a significant difference in the expression of respondents on the basis of school type and ability to use sign language. It was therefore recommended that guidance counsellors should improve on their knowledge of the use of sign language and students with H.I. should acquire hearing aids and show willingness to benefit from counselling services.Item Group Counselling in Schools(University of Ilorin Press, 2020-06) Ajiboye, Samuel K; Adebayo, David OItem Influence of Assertiveness Training in Preventing Sexual Harassment in Nigerian Universities as Perceived by Counsellors in Kwara State(Institute of Medico-Legal Publications Pvt. This study therefore examined the influence of assertiveness training in preventing sexual harassment in Nigerian universities as perceived by counsellors in Kwara State. The study adopted survey method. A total of 500 counsellors were randomly selected as samples. Self-designed questionnaire was used for data collection. It had a reliability coefficient of 0.82 using a test-retest method. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were used to answer the research questions raised and to test the four null hypotheses. Results revealed that counsellors supported the introduction of assertiveness training for preventing sexual harassments in universities. There was significant difference based on counsellors’ level of education, religions and gender, but none for knowledge of assertiveness skills. The study also examined whether moderating variables such as class level, class type and gender would affect the respondents' views. The population consisted of 800 secondary school students that were randomly selected from florin Metropolis. The researchers employed descriptive survey method for the study. The instrument used was a self-designed questionnaire titled "Career choice Questionnaire (CCQ). The t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha level were used to test the hypotheses. The result revealed that environmental factors have a positive-influence on career choice of secondary school students in llorin Metropolis. Also, there was no significant difference on the influence of environmental factors on career choice of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis on the basis of class level, gender and class type. Secondary school Counsellors should provide career guidance to learners on a continual basis during their secondary school education, so as to make adequate career choices and to enhance their emotional well-being , was recommended.Item Influence of Self-Monitoring in Preventing Bullying Behaviour as expressed by In-school Adolescents in Ilorin, Nigeria(Institute of Medico-Legal Publications Pvt. This issue can be addressed through self-monitoring. This study examined the influence of self-monitoring in preventing bullying behaviours among in-school adolescents with samples drawn from 10 purposively selected secondary schools. Three research questions were raised while four hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. Survey was employed for the field work. A total of 200 secondary school students participated in the study. Researcher-designed questionnaire entitled “Influence of Self-Monitoring on Bullying Behaviour Inventory (ISBBI) was used to elicit information from respondents. Mean, t-test and analysis of variance were used to analysis the data. Respondents appreciated the effectiveness of self-monitoring in preventing bullying behavior. Results also indicated that respondents appreciated self-monitoring exercise as a veritable strategy for reducing incidence of bullying behaviours. Recommendation include integration of behaviour modification technique with particular emphasis on the principles of self-monitoring as this could reduce incidence of bullying.Item Marital communication:(Institute Journal of Studies in Education, Institute of Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, 2016-11) Esere, Mary O; Adebiyi, Damilola R; Adebayo, David OA correlational survey design was used to determine the mediating and moderating role of emotional intelligence on marital communication of married adults in Ekiti State, Nigeria. Its major aim lies in knowing whether there is any significant relationship between emotional intelligence and marital communication. Three hundred and eighty three (383) married adults from three Local Government Areas participated in the study. The results showed 66.8% of the respondents had moderate level of emotional intelligence, while 64.0% had moderate level of marital communications. It was also revealed that emotional intelligence had high, positive and significant relationship with marital communication, while the moderating variable of gender and age were significantly related with emotional intelligence and marital communication. Furthermore, findings from this study revealed a significant difference in the emotional intelligence and marital communication of male and female married adults. It was recommended that there is the need for improved awareness to be created by the Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON) on the relationship that exists between emotional intelligence and marital communication so that counsellors can train couples in developing good communication and high emotional intelligence.Item Parenting interactive styles that enhances self-esteem as expressed by in-school adolescents in Ilorin metropolis(Faculty of Education, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria, 2018-01) Bolu-Steve, Foluke N; Akanni, H.O.; Adebayo, David OItem Perceived causes of youth restiveness by security personnel in ilorin metropolis(Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON), 2015-07) Esere, Mary O; Ajiboye, Samuel K; Adebayo, David OYouth restiveness has been a pandemic plaguing countries across the globe in recent times. The rising wave of restiveness culminating in insecurity and terrorism is quite alarming, with the most vulnerable group being the youths and other teeming youngsters in societies world over. This study therefore investigated perceived causes of youth restiveness by security personnel in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria. The design adopted for this study was the descriptive method. Three null hypotheses were formulated and tested in this study. A questionnaire tagged “Restiveness among Youth Questionnaire (RAYQ) was administered on two hundred and forty (240) security Personnel, cutting across military and para- military agencies in Kwara State. Nigeria. The study raised and answered a fundamental question on perceived causes of youth restiveness. The formulated hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance, while analysis of variance (ANOVA) was the statistical method used for data analysis. The results showed the causes of youth restiveness as poor childhood upbringing, bad societal mentoring, bad governance, poverty, inadequate educational opportunities, among others. It further revealed that there was no significant difference in the perception of security personnel on the causes of youth restiveness in Ilorin metropolis based on the type of agency and years of experience. The researchers recommended effective counselling hints as intervention strategies for handling youth restiveness in order to bring sanity into the society as a whole.Item Prevalence of father-daughter incestuous relationship as perceived by literate adults in Gombe state, Nigeria(Institute Journal of Studies in Education, Institute of Education, University of Ilorin, 2015-11) Oniye, Abdulrazaq O; Mustapha, Mulikat LA; Adebayo, David O; Dogo, JoelIncest is one of the salient sexual abuses that society pays less attention to because of the secrecy involved, most especially, those occurring between biological father and daughter. Gombe State is one of the leading states in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria where father-daughter incestuous relationship is high. Thus, this study investigated the prevalence of father-daughter incestuous relationship as perceived by literate adults in Gombe State, Nigeria. Variables of gender, age and family type were introduced to the study in order to examine their influences on respondents’ perceptions. This study is descriptive in nature and a multi-stage sampling technique procedure was adopted to draw a total sample of 783 literate adults from the three senatorial districts of Gombe State. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire developed by the researchers entitled “Father-Daughter Incestuous Relationship (FIRQ)”. Percentage was used to present the demographic data of the respondents while the null hypotheses were tested using t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that there is high prevalence of father-daughter incestuous relationship in Gombe State. The hypotheses tested revealed no significant difference in the prevalence of father-daughter incestuous relationship as perceived by literate adults based on gender, age and family type. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that strict law and enforcement should be made on sexual abuse, counsellors should organize seminars regularly to sensitize mothers and their children about incestuous occurrences in the family and disorientate the perpetrators of incest (fathers) against the practice, couples should show more commitment to their marriage in order to reduce to the barest minimum identified causes of father-daughter incestuous relationships.Item Relationship between Demographic Factors and Undergraduates’ Cyberbullying Experiences in Public Universities in Malaysia(Faculty of Education, Eskisehir Osmangazi University, Istanbul, Turkey., 2020-01-01) Adebayo, David O; Tajudin, Mohd N; Bolu-Steve, Foluke NIn modern times, social media platforms have become veritable tools of communication and interaction amongst young adults in the university environment as well as the larger society. As important as it is, the platform has continued to cause serious psychological and emotional trauma to users through cyberbullying activities. This study examined the relationship between demographic factors and undergraduates’ cyberbullying experiences in public universities in Malaysia. It was a quantitative study which adopted survey design. Self-designed questionnaire entitled Demographic factors and undergraduates’ cyberbullying experiences was used for data collection. The instrument yielded coefficient of .92 using the Cronbach’s alpha reliability. A total of 400 undergraduates were purposively selected at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. One research question was raised and three hypotheses were tested. Data collected were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling Partial Least Squares 3 (SEM-PLS3. The findings revealed that there was significant relationship between the demographic factors: gender and programme of study but no significance for race. Hence, gender and programme of study significantly predict cyberbullying experiences of undergraduates than racial affiliations. This study examined the relationship between social media use and students’ cyberbullying behaviors in a west Malaysian public university. Correlational survey was adopted, while 400 undergraduates purposively selected from three faculties participated in the study. Questionnaire entitled “Engagement on Social Media Use (ESMU)” was used for data collection. Two hypotheses were tested using SEM-PLS3. Results indicated that social media use and gender significantly related to cyberbullying behaviors. Counseling is recommended to assist in stemming cyberbullying behaviors among undergraduates.Item The Solutions to workplace sexual harassment as expressed by the labour force in Lagos, Nigeria(ASEAN Psychology and Counselling Conference, 2018-09-26) Adebayo, David O; Tajudin, Mohd N; Ajiboye, Samuel KSexual harassment is one of the major challenges faced by the labour-force in the contemporary Nigerian society. Victims of workplace sexual harassment often come under severe pressure exerted by their superiors in the form of threats to terminate appointments of the victims. This study therefore investigated solutions to workplace sexual harassment as expressed by the labour-force in Lagos, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted with a total of 515 respondents purposively selected across public and private sectors. A questionnaire entitled “Solutions to Workplace Sexual Harassment” was employed to collect data for the study. The instrument possessed a reliability coefficient of 0.81 having been subjected to the Cronbach’s alpha method. Mean and t-test statistical tools were used to analyse the data. All hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. Results revealed that strict punitive measures, increased worker assertiveness, early reporting of attempts, dressing modestly to the workplace are workable solutions to the menace of sexual harassment in the workplace. The study recommended that workers should be more official in the workplace in terms of dressing, conduct while labour laws and policies be strengthened towards ensuring the protection of workers, and teaching more assertive skills in the workplace.Item Teachers' perception of needs for elementary school counselling in ilorin metropolis, Nigeria(Department of Educational Management, Faculty of Education, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, 2015-11) Ajiboye, Samuel K; Adebayo, David O; Awoyemi, Alfred OThe elementary school stage is the foundation for future academic, psychological, persona-social and career growth upon which the fulfillment of any child’s aspiration is anchored. Unfortunately, many children at this level attend school as a routine without adequate guidance. This study therefore investigated perception of teachers in Ilorin metropolis on the needs for elementary school counselling service. Quantitative measure was adopted to gather the required information. A total of 200 respondents were purposively selected across the variables of years of teachers’ teaching experience, educational qualification and gender. The study employed the use of a questionnaire titled “Teachers’ Perception of Needs for Elementary School Counselling Questionnaire (TPNESCQ)”. The instrument had two sections A and B. Section A sought the demographic information, while section B elicited teachers’ perception. Two research questions and three null hypotheses were answered and tested respectively. The results revealed that respondents have positive perception of the needs for elementary school counselling service. Also, there was similarity in the perception of teachers based on educational qualification and years of teaching experience, but differ on the basis of gender. It was recommended that, as a matter of policy, professional counsellors should be assigned to elementary schools. In addition, specialized training for counsellors on elementary school counselling is suggested.Item Teachers’ Assessment of Inattentive Classroom Behavior Among Primary School Students in Ilorin City, Kwara State, Nigeria(Mimbar Sekolah Dasar, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, 2020-06) Ajiboye, Samuel K; Adebayo, David O; Saidu, AbubakarInattentive behavior could become unnoticed but it is often a major constraint to effective classroom instruction and students’ performance. This research investigated teachers’ assessment of inattentive classroom behavior among primary school students in Ilorin city, Kwara State, Nigeria. The research is a survey research with the population consisted of 1,568 teachers, while 160 participants were purposively selected. A questionnaire type of instrument was used in the research. The results showed a reliability coefficient of r= 0.81 after conducting the test-retest reliability. The research question was analyzed with descriptive statistics while the hypotheses were tested with t-test and ANOVA at the 0.05 level of significance. Inattentive classroom behavior was high among primary school students as assessed by teachers. Teachers’ assessment of students’ inattentive behavior was similarly based on gender and qualification but different based on work experience. It was recommended that early childhood education/primary school teachers and counselors as well as other stakeholders in primary education should synergize to mitigate the high level of inattentive classroom behavior among students in order to enhance teaching-learning.
