This paper, therefore, examine the role of the (AJE) in the coverage of Muslim world.Item AN ANALYSIS OF DAILY SUN, DAILY TRUST AND THE NATION NEWSPAPERA FRAMING OF DASUKIGATE(Faculty of Social Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi, 2016-06) Udende, Patrick; Abubakar, Ibrahim YusufThe paper analyses how selected newspapers framed stories on the alleged diversion of 2.1 billion US dollars meant to fight Boko Haram insurgence in Nigeria by Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd). Using quantitative and qualitative research methods, it purposively selects three national newspapers; Daily Sun, Daily Trust and The Nation. The three-month study systematically selects 48 editions at the interval of 4th number beginning from December 2, 2015 to February 29, 2016. The study quantitatively analyses pattern of frames with a view to determining the dominant frames the newspapers use in constructing stories. Also, the study descriptively analyses stories in terms of how newspapers cover the story. Findings show that conspiracy frame is the dominant frame (21%) in the newspapers reports. This is followed by human interest frame (17%) while attribution of responsibility and conflict frames each has (15%). The study also finds that newspapers use different frames like conspiracy, conflict/human interest, attribution of responsibility and appeal to principle frames to construct stories depending on the nature of a story. By their reach and pervasive nature, global media penetrates all civilization and alter their entire structures and potencies, by blurring, bending and blending the audiences’ perspectives with the megalomaniac Western values and decimating other perspectives that run counter to them. Most prevalent is their assaults on Islam and Muslims through various informational and cultural framings that have gained sustained prominence in the absence of a credible alternative system. In view of the implication of the ongoing on the Muslims and the fatality of creating unnecessary division in the already culturally-inclined fragile globe, this paper contributes to the ongoing debate on creation on responsible global media regime, by awakening the stakeholders on desirable roles, that would be beneficial to all in the short and long run.Item Global Media and Propagation of Islam: Challenges and prospects(Published by the International Islamic University, Malaysia, 2011-09) Abubakar, Ibrahim Yusuf; Saodah, WokMuslims nations, like other developing countries, are not among the major players in the arena of global media of communication. Therefore, citizens of these nations usually make use of major Western global media as sources of news about events around the world. However, many leaders in Muslim countries and communication scholar have expressed concern over the Western global media’s negative portrayal of Islam and Muslims. In spite of this, notable Western global media, like CNN and BBC satellite news channels, remain popular as the major sources of world news, especially for Muslim educated elites across the Muslims nations. On its part, newspapers are always alive with reports on activities of the House of Representatives. However, the aspects of undertaking qualitative research to complement existing studies that adopt other methods have been elusive. Consequently, this study seeks to analyse the pattern of frames newspaper uses to construct stories on the House of Representatives. Method of the study is qualitative content analysis while population is four Nigerian dailies namely Thisday, the Nation, Daily Trust, and Nigerian Tribune purposively selected. Unit of analysis is headlines systematically selected between January 2013 and December, 2014. Findings reveal conflict/human interest as the dominant frame newspaper uses to construct its stories. Findings also show that several reports do not favour the House of Representatives. The study recommends among other things that newspaper should restrain from conflict-ridden frames that are dramatic but employ frames with educational undertone.
