Abstract
This paper examines the history of educational policy formulation and implementation in Nigeria: implications for sustainable national development. it examined the policies adopted by the various Christian missions in administering education during the period of exclusive missionary control of education up to 1882 when the British colonial administrators enacted the earliest education ordinance in Nigeria. The paper featured historical analysis in the examination of the various ordinances, codes, memoranda and laws promulgated by the colonial administrators from 1882 to guide the process and development of education during their various periods of existence. It was found that the convocation of the 1969 National Curriculum Conference eventually ushered in the National Policy on Education in 1977 which introduced the 6-3-3-4 system of education, now being practiced as 9-3-4. The National Policy on Education (1977) and its subsequent revisions (1981,1998, 2004, and 2013) have placed great emphasis on functional and technology -based education. These have implications for education policy makers and planners on the need to take cognizance of local and national peculiarities by initiating policies that will promote functionality, unity and equity among the teeming populace . It was recommended that Nigerian youths are adequately and realistically equipped to be highly productive so that Nigeria would really develop and for the development to be sustained.
