Abstract

Description

French language can be considered as a foreign language in Nigeria. In the words of Byram (1987, p. 8) ŖForeign language competence has since ancient time been a sign of the educated manŗ. There exist many reasons for the pursuit of knowledge on foreign language, among which are, as Ajiboye (2005, p.41) puts it, Ŗan increased desire to make new friends, break new grounds, form fresh alliances, renew old ties and establish international cooperationŗ. For Bamgbose (1991, p. 11), the rationale behind language education includes, among many others, Ŗto integrate into the life of the community (...) learning a border language for trade purposes, learning a lingua franca, a language of wider communication or a national language for instrumental purposes
