Item Adoption of Agricultural Innovation among Farmers in Edu L.G.A, Kwara State(Department of Geography & Environmental Management, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, 2016) Adeleke, Elisha Ademola; Tunde, Afolabi Monisola; Tilakasiri, S.LSustainable crop production is an important aspect of agricultural production that needs to be emphasized. This study examined various agricultural innovation on sustainability of crop production in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria with a view to examining the socioeconomic characteristics of farmers; farmers' adoption of new innovation; and impact of adoption of innovation on farmers' productivity and income. Eighty-five farmers were randomly selected for this study. Frequency tables, percentages, charts and analysis of variance were used to analyze the collected data. The study revealed that the new techniques on agricultural productivity have significant impact on farmers' income (F=1.950, p<0.05). The study recommended an increase in the adoption of agricultural innovation which is a more potent approach to improve agricultural productivity among local farmers.Item Analysis of Trends in House Rent in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State(Centre of Human Settlement and Urban Development, Federal University of Technology Minna, 2015-06) Tunde, Afolabi Monisola; Afolayan, Ganiyu Popoola; Adeniyi, Enekole EstherHouse rent has always been guided by principles of demand and supply, This Study analyzes trends in rent in Ilorin metropolis. Specifically, identifies the factors influencing increase in house rent; it also determines the effects of change in rent on household size and on the inhabitant in the study area. The twenty political wards within were used and five hundred (500) tenants were sampled systematically. The period covers twenty years (1992-2011). Focus Group Discussions (FGDS) were organized in different locations with tenants, landlords. caretakers and estate agents. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data gathered. The Trend reveals an increase over twenty year period considering rental classes. However, the low income group experienced highest rate of increase. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient revealed there is a significant relationship between income and rent paid. Factors that determine increase in house rent are population growth/demand , location, type of house, building materials, facilities in the house. environment and basic amenities available in neighborhood. Based on these, recommendations made include government assistance in providing more housing units at affordable rate. Since increase in population has been identified as one the factors influencing house rent, rural areas and medium-sized towns should therefore be developed so as to curb rural-urban migration.Item Assessment of Domestic Violence against Women in Nigeria: Example from Rural Environment(Department of Geography, Osun State University, Osun, Nigeria, 2021) Tunde, Afolabi Monisola; Okunade, John Olusegun; Omojola, Oluwatosin PeterThis paper examines domestic violence against women in the rural areas of Ido-Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. It identifies the most common types and perpetrators of violence; identifies major causes of domestic violence; assesses the impact of violence on the well-being and health of women; and highlights the challenges faced by victims of domestic violence in seeking help. A total of 399 respondents were sampled with copies of questionnaire. To complement this, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were organized with men. Findings revealed that 89.2% of the women were 30 years and above, 64.3% married and 53.4% had no formal education. Sexual assault was reported to be the most common assault (x=3.62). Major cause of violence includes intolerance on the part of partners (x=3.52) and males are usually the perpetrators. The impact of domestic violence shows that assaults from domestic violence shape the way a spouse is treated (x=3.41). Some of the men responded that they were both victims and perpetrators. The most difficult challenge is that victims are too ashamed to ask for help. Rural women suffer more in terms of domestic violence in the country; they should therefore be empowered economically and educationally.Item An Assessment of the Challenges and Prospects of Infrastructure Provision in Kwara State, Nigeria.(FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, 2015-12) Afolayan, Ganiyu Popoola; Tunde, Afolabi Monisola; Adeniyi, Enekole EstherThe bias towards the medium-sized towns in infrastructure provision has prompted communities to provide these basic needs. This study therefore assesses the challenges and prospects of infrastructure provision in Kwara State, Nigeria with a view to understanding the contributions of communities' efforts towards this venture. Specifically, the study identifies the number of communities that are between 5,000 and 20,000 people categorised as medium sized towns; identifies the basic infrastructure provided through community efforts and examines reasons for their provision by the communities. Quantitative method ofresearch was employed to analyse the data collected through random sampling administration to 688 respondents. Infrastructure provided as revealed in the study include roads, water, health facilities, electricity, market stalls, schools and town halls. Reasons for their provision were basicallyfactorsfor urban development. The challenges faced were lack of adequatefinancial supportfrom government and communities and overestimation ofproject. The study therefore revealed the need for adequate government support in the provision of infrastructure. Community partnership with the NGOs and the full support ofwealthy citizen in the community in this project were also suggested.Item Assessment of Urban Women Farmers’ Contribution to Poverty Alleviation in Small Towns of Kwara State, Nigeria(Environmental Technology, Federal University of Technology. Minna, Nigeria, 2016) Tunde, Afolabi MonisolaUrban agriculture is a strategy to food security, poverty reduction and urban environmental nlanagement. This study assesses the contributions of women farmers to poverty alleviation in small towns ofKwara State. Specifically, it identifies the poor urban women; examines the features of urban agriculture; examines the ways urban food production by women farmers helps improve nutritional development and determines the impact of urban food production on women farmers ' poverty alleviation. Primary and secondary sources of data were employed in order to achieve the stated objectives. A multistage sampling technique was employed to select 1, 801 women farmers for questionnaire administration. Foster Greer and Thorbecke poverty measure was used to examine the poverty situation of the respondents. ANOVA was used to examine the features of urban agriculture betvveen settlements in order to show if there are variations in urban farming in the sampled settlements. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the socio-economic impacts of urban agriculture on women farmers' poverty alleviation. The findings revealed that the 93.1% of the respondents earn less than N50, 000 annually, 62.6% are into part-time farming while only 37.4% are into full-time. Only 19.7% are household heads. Also,92.3% are poor based on the income from their main occupation. Significant differences only existed in the roles performed by women and types of crops grown between settlements. Multiple regression analysis revealed three variables (expenditure on household items expenditure on food and value of assets acquired) contribute about 67.6% to poverty alleviation. Recommendations made include urban agriculture should be given official recognition; urban agriculture should be retained as a part of the city's economy and land tenure system should be organized to allow women access to land and full right on use of land.Item Climate Change and Poor Rural Women in Nigeria(Stamford Lake Ltd. This paper examines the impacts of climate change on Nigerian cities. It describes the relationships between climate change, human settlements and urban planning. Published and unpublished materials were used to describe the vulnerability of Nigerian cities to climate change challenges. It later argued for the need to develop appropriate planning strategies for mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change in Nigerian urban centres. Although, some scholars are of the opinion that men and women can never be treated equally but the fact remains that if men and women are treated equally it will definitely encourage sustainable development in Nigeria. This chapter discusses gender equality as a key to sustainable development in Nigeria. It is divided into six parts. The first part examines the introductory aspect; the second defines gender; gender equality and gender inequality; the third also defines the concept of sustainable development; the fourth explains the reasons for gender inequality; the fifth discusses the relationships between gender equality and sustainable development; the sixth part deals with women empowerment for sustainable development the seventh analyzes gender and development; and the eight part is the concluding and recommendation aspect.Item A Review on Cultural Festivals and Cultural Tourism Development in Rural Areas of Nigeria(Hospitality and Tourism Management Association of Nigeria (HATMAN), 2022) Tunde, Afolabi Monisola; Okunade, John Olusegun; Omojola, Oluwatosin PeterCultural tourism is one of the definite ways to open up rural areas. Its development can lead to provision of infrastructural facilities such as transportation systems, electricity, communication networks, pipe-borne water, sewage, hospital and cultural institutions among others. Cultural festival plays significant role in sustainable cultural and rural tourism development. This paper therefore, argues on resuscitation of lost cultural values in terms of cultural festivals as a strategy to rural development. This is with a view to understanding how the state of cultural and rural tourism industry can be improved upon in the rural areas of Nigeria. The paper reviews literature on cultural tourism and festivals; examines reasons for neglect/abandonment of cultural festivals in some rural areas; assesses the impacts of cultural festivals on the residents, tourists and host communities; identifies the challenges of cultural festivals and highlights the way forward. The paper concludes by emphasizing on the need to resuscitate neglected/abandoned cultural festivals in some rural areas of Nigeria as this will bring back the lost cultural values. Furthermore, it will enhance sustainable economic development for both the residents and host communities and the country at large. The paper therefore tasks planners, policy makers and environmental development agencies in each state to come up with policies and programs to identify and promote cultural festivals as cultural tourism product.
