Item Artemether-Lumefantrine Mixed Ligand Complexes: Synthesis and in vitro AntiplasmodialActivity Studies(Al-Hikmah University, 2018-12-05) Rajee, Abdullahi O; Babamale, Halimah Funmilayo; Lawal, Misitura; Ayinla, S O; Lawal, Amudalat; Obaleye, Joshua AMalaria is one of the main causes of mortality and morbidity in the world, endangering billions and affecting millions of people each year. Resistance to common antimalarial drugs has proven to be a challenging problem in malaria control. In an attempt to develop efficacious compounds against sensitive and multidrug resistant falciparum malaria, four new complexes of mixed ligands (artemether and lumefantrine) were synthesized using template method. Their antiplasmodial activity potential was evaluated and compared with chloroquine and the parent ligands. The compounds were active against the tested parasite strains. The presence of the metal ions significantly improved the antiplasmodial action against the drug-resistant parasite strains when compared to chloroquine. Additionally, their biological activity was assessed using several in vitro assays. Biological and physical properties were correlated to the antimalarial activity.Item Mixed metal complexes of Artemether, Lumefantrine and Ascorbic acid: Synthesis, characterization and biological activity studies(Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Ilorin, 2019) Babamale, Halimah Funmilayo; Obaleye, Joshua A; Lawal, Amudalat; Rajee, Abdullahi O; Bamigboye, Mercy O; Lawal, Misitura; Sa'ad, H. OSome transition metal complexes of mixed artemether, ascorbic acid and lumefantrine have been synthesized and characterized using UV/Vis, FTIR, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and Gas chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GCMS). The results revealed that the artemether and ascorbic acid are chelating ligands and coordinates through the oxygen of the carbonyl groups while lumefantrine coordinates through the hydroxyl group in a monodentate fashion. The metal complexes were investigated for biological activity using five bacterial species - Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was observed that the synthesized complexes were more effective towards the five bacteria species than the free drugs.Item SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF MIXED ASCORBIC ACID - NICOTINAMIDE METAL COMPLEXES(Bayero University Kano, 2015) Lawal, Amudalat; Amolegbe, S A; Rajee, Abdullahi O; Babamale, Halimah Funmilayo; Yunus-Issa, M TThe present study aimed at synthesizing copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes of mixed ascorbic acid and nicotinamide and physiochemically characterize by solubility test, melting point, conductivity test, infrared, electronic and proton nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The result of the physiochemical studies indicated 1:1 stoichiometry and were supported by the spectroscopic data. The antimicrobial activities of the mixed complexes were carried out against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Penicillum, spp Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger. The result of the infrared data showed that ascorbic acid coordinates through the oxygen of the carbonyl group and that of enolic C-2 hydroxyl group, while nicotinamide coordinates through the nitrogen atom of the pyridine ring. The result of the antimicrobial studies showed that the mixed complexes have higher inhibitory activity than the original ligands against the tested bacteria and fungi species.
