    Assessment of fresh and returning undergraduates’ attitudes towards learning of Social Studies in University of Ilorin, Nigeria

    This study examined fresh and returning undergraduates' attitudes towards learning of Social Studies in University of Ilorin, Nigeria. 100 level and 400 level students were sampled as the fresh and returning Social Studies undergraduates respectively using quota sampling technique. A researcher self-developed questionnaire was used for data collection while data collected were analysed using percentage. Mean was used to answer research questions while hypothesis was tested using Chi-square at 0.05 significance level. Findings of the study revealed that fresh undergraduates have positive attitude towards learning of Social Studies; returning undergraduates also have positive attitude towards learning Social Studies; and there was no significant difference between fresh and returning undergraduates’ attitudes toward learning of Social Studies in the university. It was therefore concluded that there was no significant difference between fresh and returning undergraduate attitudes towards learning of Social Studies in the university. It was therefore recommended that emphasize should be laid on affective domain purposely to enhance learning and internalization of its contents in order to foster positive attitudes in Social Studies students.

    ASSESSMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE TEACHER TRAINEES’ AWARENESS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

    The paper assessed the undergraduate teacher trainees’ awareness of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study mainly examined the awareness of undergraduate teacher trainees on perception, objectives, conceptual and operational framework of SDGs. The population of the study comprised University of Ilorin undergraduate teacher trainees. Descriptive survey design was employed in the study and a questionnaire titled “Undergraduate teacher trainees’ Awareness of Sustainable Development Goals (UASDGs)” was administered to five hundred (500) students but only 467 were returned and were used. Three research questions were raised and answered using percentage. Two null hypotheses were tested using t-test statistic at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study showed that majority of undergraduate teacher trainees were not aware of the relationship between MDGs and SDGs identified in this study, they were only aware of MDGs which were developed for actualization in 15 years and they were aware of SDGs’ objectives. Findings also showed that majority of the undergraduate teacher trainees were not aware of the conceptual and operational platform of SDGs. The findings revealed that a significant difference exists between male and female, and Arts and Social Sciences Education undergraduate teacher trainees’ awareness of SDGs. Based on the findings, it was recommended that SDGs should be introduced to the curriculum content of the university education and citizenship education and Strategies and techniques should be involved in the awareness of the undergraduate teacher trainees to enable them work towards actualization of the goals.

    Availability and use of computer-based instructional materials (CIM) by upper basic Social Studies teachers in Ilorin, Nigeria

    Teachers are the most important agents for the successful implementation of educational programme. They play vital roles on educational innovations and their application in teaching and learning process to assist learners in the acquisition of concrete and rewarding school experience, Social Studies teachers are not exception. This study examined teacher variables and use of Computer Assisted Instructional Materials (CAIM) in Upper Basic Social Studies in Kwara State. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population for this study covered all upper basic social studies teachers in Kwara State. Sample for this study comprised 150 respondents sampled through a stratified random sampling technique. The instrument was a questionnaire titled “Computer Assisted Instructional Materials in Social Studies Assessment Checklist (CAIMSSAC)” with a reliability 0f 0.83. The data collected were analysed using percentage for the research questions while hypotheses were tested using t-test statistic. The findings of the study showed that CAIM are not frequently used by Social Studies teachers for instructional purposes. Only computer systems are occasionally used for information processing and storage. The study revealed that there is no statistically significant different between male and female (t=0.12, p>0.05), qualified and unqualified teachers (t=0.02, p>0.05), and experienced and less experienced Social Studies teachers (t=0.27, p>0.05) on the use of CAIM. Based on these findings, it was recommended that teachers should be encouraged to be computer literate and frequently use CAIM for teaching. Regular workshops, seminars, and in-service training should be organised to improve teachers’ efficiency on the usage of CAIM.

    CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF CORRUPT PRACTICES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS AS PERCEIVED BY STAKEHOLDERS IN KWARA STATE

    Corruption has permeated almost all facets of human endeavours with no exception to the educational sector in which secondary schools are integral parts of the sector. This paper assessed causes and effects of corrupt practices in secondary schools in Kwara State. The study mainly examined the forms, causes, effects and preventive measures of tackling corrupt practices in secondary schools and human society. The population of the study was comprised of all secondary school students, teachers and parents in the state. Sample for this study consisted 115 respondents selected through a stratified random sampling technique. Forty-five students, 40 teachers and 30 parents were sampled using stratified sampling technique. Descriptive survey design was employed and a questionnaire titled “Causes and Effects of Corrupt practices in Secondary Schools Questionnaire” (CECSSQ) with a reliability index of 0.78 was used for data collection. Four research questions were raised and answered using mean and standard deviation. The result of the study showed that parents, teachers and students agreed that parents involved in giving out money to influence their children results; illegal deduction of staff salaries and illegal additional charges on school fees are the prominent forms of corrupt practices in secondary schools. The prominent causes of corrupt practices in the secondary schools are lack of students’ poor attitude towards learning and reading predisposes them to cheat and engage in corrupt practices. More so, poor remunerations which do induce teachers to collect bribe from students. Corrupt practices have effects on academic standard, qualitative education and facilities in the schools. Based on these findings, it was recommended among other that more emphasis should be given to moral education and character development in secondary schools in the country.

    EFFECT OF COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTIONAL PACKAGE ON UPPER BASIC STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA

    Computer Assisted Instructional Package is an innovative and interactive instructional technique of using computers in carrying out teaching and learning activities in the classroom situations. This study examined the effect of Computer Assisted Instructional Package on Upper Basic Social Studies students’ performance in Kwara State, Nigeria. Quasi-experimental study involving 2x2x2 non-randomized and non-equivalent pretest-posttest control groups research design was adopted. A simple random sampling technique was used to select two intact classes, one was an experimental group, the other was a control group. The instruments used were Computer Assisted Instructional Package and Social Studies Performance Tests. Their reliability coefficients were 0.78 and 0.76 respectively. The findings of the study revealed that the mean performance of upper basic students exposed to the package was high. There was a significant effect of the package on upper basic students’ performance in Social Studies (F=18.920, P>0.000); there was no significant interaction effect of gender, school mode and the package on upper basic students’ performance in Social Studies. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Computer Assisted Instructional Package should be used in teaching Social Studies to enhance students’ performance in schools and that the gender friendliness of Social Studies should be sustained.

    Impacts of instructional evaluation techniques on teaching of upper basic Social Studies in Kwara State

    Evaluation is often used to characterize and appraise subjects of interest and learners at different levels of education purposely to improve the effective teaching and learning of the subjects and determine the performance of the learners. This study examined the impacts of evaluation techniques on effective implementation of upper basic Social Studies curriculum in Kwara State. The specific objectives of this study were to investigate the extent of using as well as the impacts of evaluation techniques on the effective implementation of upper basic Social Studies curriculum. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was all basic students in the state. Three local government were selected using stratified random sampling technique based on senatorial district. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select twenty-five upper basic schools in each local government areas in the state. Purposive sampling technique was used to sample 150 upper basic Social Studies teachers. A questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Three research questions were answered. Research questions one and two were answered using frequency and percentage while research question three was answered using mean ranking. The findings of the study showed that questioning, test and assignment were prevalent types of instructional evaluation techniques and frequently used. The techniques have impacts on teaching Social Studies in upper basic schools. Based on the findings, it was recommended that teachers should endeavour to use other instructional evaluation techniques to cater for individual differences among learners in the classroom.

    Prospective teachers’ awareness of teacher certification for quality assurance in Nigerian education system.

    Teaching profession is adequately certified, regulated and licensed by Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to ensure quality and standard in the system. The prospective teachers of teacher educational institutions are important stakeholders trained to facilitate and enhance the effective teaching and learning processes in the in the classrooms but how far are the teachers aware of teacher certification. It becomes imperative to assess prospective teachers’ awareness of teacher certification for quality assurance in the education system. The objectives of the study were to investigate prospective teachers’ awareness of teacher certification, obligations of teachers under TRCN and, rights and privileges of registered teachers with TRCN for quality assurance in the sector. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Stratified random sampling technique was employed to select three hundred students in teacher educational institutions in Kwara State. A researcher-designed questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected were analysed using percentage and means ranking. The findings of the study showed that prospective teachers had low level of awareness on the activities of the TRCN towards teacher certification, obligations of teachers registered under TRCN as well as rights and privileges of registered teachers with TRCN for quality assurance in the education system. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that procedures and processes of teacher certification should be integrated into teacher education for prospective teachers to have adequate information and enlightenment about the professionalism.

    Role of traditional rulers in conflict resolution for sustainable democracy in Nigeria.

    This research examined the roles of traditional rulers in conflict resolution in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study population consisted of traditional rulers in the state. The study adopted a descriptive survey type, 180 members of traditional rulers were sampled through simple random sampling technique. The researchers’ designed questionnaire titled Roles of Traditional Rulers in Conflict Resolution Questionnaire was used as an instrument to elicit data from the respondents. The findings of the study showed that traditional rulers had many roles they play in conflict resolution in all ramifications. The study also revealed that there was no significant difference in the roles of traditional rulers in conflict resolution based on age and marital status. Based on the findings of the study, it was therefore, recommended that traditional rulers in the state should be familiar with the issues that are germane among individuals, social groups as well as providing the possible resolution to any conflict among them in the state purposely to enhance and facilitate sustainable democracy in the society.

    Teachers’ Attitude towards Inclusive Educational Practices in upper Basic Schools in Ilorin, Nigeria.

    This research work explored the attitudes of teachers towards inclusive educational practices in upper basic schools in Ilorin, Nigeria. It adopted a descriptive research design. Eight schools from public and seven from private were selected, using purposive random sampling technique. 200 respondents were selected from selected schools using simple random sampling technique. One research question was answered and three null hypotheses were tested. Data collected through a researcher designed questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that the attitudes of the teachers towards inclusive educational practices was negative. The finding of the study also showed that, years of teaching experience is not a determinant of teachers’ attitude towards inclusive education as there was no significant difference in the attitude of teachers based on years of experience. Finally, it was also discovered that teachers do not have different opinion in their perception on the inclusive educational practices. Based on these findings, it was recommended that students with special needs should be placed in a separate school so that teachers who are trained specifically for students who falls into such category would equip them passionately with necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes that make them responsible and recognisable members of their society.

    UNDERGRADUATES’ PERCEPTION ON TRANSPORTATION ISSUES IN THE NIGERIAN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES

    Students of public universities face many challenges of transportation issues which affect their well-being. The study investigated undergraduates’ perception of transport issues in public universities in Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive study design. The sample of the study was undergraduates in public universities in four selected states in South-west in Nigeria using simple random sampling technique. The instrument employed for data collection was self-structured questionnaire tagged “Undergraduates’ Perception on Transport Issues in Public Universities Questionnaire (UPTIPUQ)”. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of mean and rank order to answer the research questions. Finding revealed that major problems of transportation issues in public universities in Nigeria as perceived by undergraduates was the limited available buses/cars in the school. The finding also revealed that major causes, effects and solutions to transportation issues were the limited available cabs/buses, spending long hours at the school park to board cabs/buses make undergraduates get home late and affected their learning activities. It was recommended that means of increasing transport service should be explored. Ensuring the punctuality of the students for lectures rests on the brief and cogent university transport strategy and policy in the university communities.

    Utilizing Islamic Moral Values in Curbing Excesses during Ceremonies.

    ABSTRACT The backdrop of this paper has to do with the experience and observation of the writers as regards the manners in which food is being served at ceremonies and the extent to which the guests of the ceremonies treat the excess food being served. This has been noticed and has been a source of concern over the years at different ceremonies in our society, be it burial, naming or wedding ceremonies. There are various categories of people found within the premises where ceremonies are taking place these categories of people are ranked at many ceremonies, and this paper discusses those categories to sensitize the general populace to the right categories of people who should be served food and the right proportion expected to be dish and consumed at ceremonies in other to curb excess food from waste. Islam acknowledges that humans will embark on many actions for survival, among which ceremonies and food are included this is the reason for justifying the above submission with an Islamic Economy perspective. This paper proffers certain tips to curb excess food and prevent waste, it was concluded that whether rich or poor the time has ripe to sensitize people to operate under the limit of what is normal in the sight of humans and that of Almighty Allah. The paper recommends among others that whoever reads this paper should take it as the duty to communicate the message to those who need it and starting with ones’ family, relatives, neighbours who can also sensitize others.
