Item ATITUDE OF TEACHERS TOWARDS THE INTRODUCTION OF CIVC EDUCATION IN SECONDARY SCHOLS IN ILORIN METROPOLISA(Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Journal of Science, Technology & Education (JOSTE), 2015) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Saidu, A; Bello, D.BThis study aimed at surveying the attitude of teachers towards the introduction of civic education in secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis. The target population for the study comprised all teachers in Upper Basic Schools in Ilorin, Kwara State. At stage one, simple random sampling technique was used in selecting two Local Governments out of the three Local Government Areas in Ilorin Metropolis. At second stage, Stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting five schools on the basis of school ownership in Ilorin, while twenty teachers were purposively selected from each of these schools. Thus, a total of two hundred respondents participated in the study. Data were collected using a researcher designed instrument tagged “Attitude of Teachers towards the Introduction of Civic Education Questionnaire ” (ATTICEQ). The data were analyzed using percentages, mean, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The findings of this study showed that there was no significant difference in the attitude teachers of teachers towards the introduction of civic education in secondary school on the basis gender and school type. However a significant difference was found in the attitude of the respondents based on their teaching experience and educational qualification. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that the government should endeavor to train more teachers; this can be done by providing incentives such as reduction in school fees for teachers who wants to be trained along this line.Item Causes of late marriage as perceived by students of University of Ilorin, Nigeria(Department of Social Sciences Education, 2012) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Omotosho, J. AThe study looked at the causes of late marriage among student of University of Ilorin. The researcher design was the descriptive survey type. This study was carried out in the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The target population was graduate students of University of Ilorin. Five faculties were selected out of the 15 faculties in the University of Ilorin using the dip-hart method. This method involved researchers writing the names of the faculties on small pieces of papers, folding and dropping it in a bowl and picking the five folded pieces one at a time. The selected Faculties were Education, Agriculture, Sciences, Law and, Business and Social Sciences. Purposive sampling technique was used in selecting 100 respondents from each faculty, which brings the total to 500 postgraduate students of University of Ilorin contacted for the study. This was done because the postgraduate students are not as much as the undergraduates in all the faculties. The findings showed that there was significant difference in respondents’ perception on the basis of religion. However, no significant difference was found on the basis of family type. Some recommendations were made which include the need for counselors to intensify efforts in organizing counselling programmes for adult postgraduate students who are of marriageable age. The government was also encouraged to appeal through the appropriate organ for religious tolerance and co-habilitation among citizens.Item CHALLENGES OF IN SCHOOL-ADOLESCENT AS EXPRESSED BY SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ETSAKO WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE, NIGERIA(The Department of Human Kinetics Education, Faculty of Ilorin, University of Ilorin, 2014) Ogwokhademhe, M.C; Bolu-Steve, F.N; Imonigie, MAdolescents are confronted with the challenges of transition from childhood to adulthood mostly without much tutor or awareness of the challenges and changes which the period enclosed. This crisis result in the manifestation of such problems as bullying, teenage pregnancies, drug abuse, different forms of violence and other vices that are linked with maladaptive behaviours. The study investigated adolescents’ challenges as expressed by secondary school students in Etsako West LGA of Edo State. A multi-stage sampling technique was adopted for this study. At stage one, five public and five private schools with large population of students were purposively selected. At stage two, the students were stratified into age, class level, gender and school type. Finally, twenty (20) students were randomly selected from each of the ten schools. This makes a total of 200 respondents who participated in the study. A self-developed instrument titled “Adolescents’ challenges Questionnaire” (ACQ) was used to collect relevant data for the study. The questionnaire was pilot tested, validated and the reliability co-efficient of 0.65 gotten revealed that the instrument is reliable for the study. A Four Point- Likert Type scale developed questionnaire gave opportunity for respondents to pick an option that they mostly agreed/disagreed with. The major finding of the study revealed that “Academic Related challenges” is the highest challenge of adolescents. Other findings are that age of the respondents does not influence their expression on adolescents’ problem while respondents’ class level, gender, school type, religion and class type influenced their expression on adolescents’ challenges. The counseling implication of the findings is that counselors should consistently organize counseling programmes for students on study habits and study culture that would enhance academic success. Based on the findings of the study, therefore, it is recommended that Counselling Association of Nigeria through the Federal, State, and Local Government should weave in “Moral Education” into the education curriculum at all levels so as to impact in the adolescents, full knowledge of “adolescence”, to teach the changes, challenges and societal expectations of adolescents at this crucial stage. With this full knowledge adolescents will be able to adjust well to the challenges and work on the various problems of adolescence as revealed in the past literatures.Item Characteristics of menstrual syndrome among undergraduates of a Nigerian University.(Department of Counsellor Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin., 2011) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Atinuke, O.AThis study was carried out among female Undergraduates in the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was adopted in selecting 284 female students. The t-test statistics was used in testing the hypotheses raised in the study at 0.05 alpa level. The result showed that there were no significant differences in the respondents’ characteristics of menstrual syndrome on the basis of their position in the family, age and mothers’ educational level. Based on the findings, it was recommended that sex education should be introduced into secondary school curriculum and that counselors should provide psychological support for undergraduate females experiencing menstrual syndrome.Item Counselling intervention programme for managing trauma among women experiencing infant mortality.(Department physical and health Education of Bayero University of Kano Nigeria, 2015) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Dominic, O.LInfant mortality remains a challenging issue in developing countries despite its significant decline in most part of the developed world. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a counselling intervention for trauma among women experiencing infant mortality. Psychological trauma is a type of damage to the psyche that occurs as a result of a traumatic event such as the death of a child. Women often experience posttraumatic stress disorder like phobia, insomnia, emotional breakdown and panic attacks. Cognitive behaviour therapy seem to be an effective counseling intervention programme for trauma in the sense that it treats the emotional problems associated with illogical, irrational and negative thinking. It is also comprehensive active directive, philosophically and empirically based psychotherapy which focuses on managing truma. In conclusion the major aim of the counsellor is to dispute and teach the client experiencing infant mortality how to replace self-defeating or irrational thoughts with logical and realistic one.Item Counsellors Perception on enhancing girl-child education in Kwara State, Nigeria.(Counselling Association of Nigeria, 2017) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Adegoke, A.A; Adeboye, AGirl chid education is the process through which a young girl obtains knowledge in order to develop her potentials for self-actualization. The present study investigated the counsellors’ perception on enhancing girl-child education in Kwara state. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. This research design was used because it provides an accurate description of a phenomenon. The target population for this study were the secondary school counsellors in the state. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 70 respondents from each of the three senatorial districts in Kwara State. Thus a total of two hundred and ten counsellors participated in the study. The researchers developed questionnaire titled “Counsellors’ Perception on Enhancing Girl-Child Education Questionnaire” (CPEGQ) was administered to the school counsellors. The questionnaire consists of three sections. The findings revealed that counselling parents on the need for girl-child education, establishing more friendly girl-child schools, provision of incentives for girl-child in school are factors that can enhance girl-child education. Also, it was found that parents level of education; cultural norms and religious injunction were the major factors militating against girl child education. Four null hypotheses were tested using t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical tool at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that there were no significant difference in the counsellors’ perception on enhancing girl-child education in kwara state, on the basis of gender, years in service, and educational qualification. However, a significant difference was found on the basis of school type. It was therefore recommended that the government should organize community based enlightenment programme on the importance of the girl child education.Item Efficacy of traditional family planning as perceived by educated mothers in Jebba town Kwara State.(A publication of College of Education, Osun State University, 2017) . This study adopted descriptive survey design. The target population for the study consist of mothers in Jebba town, Kwara State. For the purpose of this study, mothers were randomly selected in schools and offices. Two hundred mothers who could read and write were purposively selected for this study. The six research hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. A questionnaire titled ‘Efficacy of Traditional Family Planning Questionnaire’ was designed and used by the researcher to gather information for the study. The data collected were analyzed through the use of mean, standard deviation, t-test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical methods. Results of the findings revealed that there were no significant differences in the perception of mothers towards traditional family planning methods on the basis of age, educational qualification, religion, duration of marriage, tribe while a significant difference was found on the basis of religion. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that adequate awareness be made on the various birth control methods that are available. Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo, University of Ile Ife, 2017) MUSTAPHA, M.L.A; Bolu-Steve, F.N; Ajiboye, S.KThis study aimed at finding out the relationships between family background and bullying behaviour of in – school Adolescents in Ilorin Metropolis. Family background in this study entails: parenting styles, family structure, parent’s socio-economic status, parents’ educational qualification. This study adopted correlational survey design. The population consist of all inschool adolescents in secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis with total population of about one hundred thousand. A sample of 400 adolescents in 20 randomly selected schools in Ilorin Metropolis participated in the study. The data for the study were gathered using questionnaire titled “family background and bullying behaviour of in-school adolescents”. The data were analysed using frequency count, check list and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The result of the study revealed that relationship exists between parenting styles and bullying behaviour of in – school adolescents (R= 0.352). Result also shows that adolescent’s involvement in bullying behaviour did not relate with family structure (R = -0.038). Negative relationship exists between in – school adolescents bullying behaviour and parents’ socio – economic status (R = -0.323). The study finally revealed that there is relationship between parents’ educational qualification and in – school adolescents bullying behaviour with that of mother’s educational qualifications been negatively related. The implication of these findings is that parents employed defective parenting styles in rearing in – school adolescents thereby leading to adolescents’ involvement in bullying behaviour. Counsellors in schools should therefore organise workshop for parents on the need for effective parenting style to stem the tide of bullying behaviour among in- school adolescents.Item Implications of radio listening habits of nomads in Kwara State on adult education component of Normadic education programme.(The Department of Education, University of Maiduguri Nigeria, 2015) Saidu, A; Arikewuyo, A.O; Bolu-Steve, F.NThe cardinal objective of this study was the investigation of radio listening habits of pastoral Nomads in Kwara State and its implications on Adult Education component of Nomadic Education Programme. A total of 560 respondents were engaged in the study using cluster sampling technique. Also, a researcher designed questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected for the study was analysed using charts, frequency counts and percentages. The reliability co-efficient was calculated to be 0.76. The finding of the study showed that majority of the respondents own radio sets and listen to it frequently. It was also revealed that various radio programmes that pastoral Nomads listen to have made them to enroll their children in school. It was recommended that Information Communication Technology can also be used to reach the Nomads as it is capable of providing learning opportunities for informal and non-formal continuing literacy in adult and basic youth education programme.Item Influence of job satisfaction on productivity of secondary school teachers in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State Nigeria.(CEFWA International Conference, University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana, 2013) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Nyarko-Sampson, E; Agoha, B.O; Ogwokhademhe, M. CThe study examined the influence of job satisfaction on the productivity of secondary school teachers in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State Nigeria. The descriptive survey method was used and data were collected through the administration of an instrument titled influence of job satisfaction on productivity of teacher’s questionnaire (IJSPTQ).Responses from the respondents were analyzed using percentages, means, frequency, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-test. All hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The researchers purposively selected one government-owned school with a large population of teachers in each of the four Local Governments Areas in Ilorin; Ilorin East, Ilorin South, Ilorin West and Asa. Simple random sampling technique was employed in selecting fifty teachers from each school, making a total sample of 200 respondents. The major findings of this study showed that there were no significant difference in the influence of job satisfaction on productivity of secondary school teachers on the basis of gender, age, salary scale and education. The implication of this study for counselling among others is that counsellors should intensify efforts at organizing enlightenment programmes on motivational skills that enhance job satisfaction and productivity. Government should also ensure that teachers’ salaries and yearly entitlements are paid promptly.Item Influence of vocational subjects on career choice as expressed by senior secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis.(Journal of Historians of Education Development Society of Nigeria, 2016) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Ogunshola, A.JThe choice of career is one of the most important decisions an individual makes. Owing to the fact of the down turn of the economy in Nigeria, vocational subjects are structured in a way which ensures that every senior secondary school graduate has acquired relevant functional vocational/entrepreneurship skills. Thus, this study investigated the influence of vocational subjects on career choice as expressed by senior secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. The study considered the influence of variables such as gender, age, religion, school type and parents educational qualification. The descriptive survey method was adopted for this study. This study was carried out in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The target population were all senior secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. Two schools (public and private) were purposely selected from each of the Four Local Government Areas (Ilorin East, Ilorin South, Ilorin West and Asa) in Ilorin metropolis. Systematic random sampling technique was used in selecting 25 students in the senior secondary section from each of the schools, which brings the total to 200 respondents. The instrument used for gathering data is a questionnaire titled “influence of vocational subjects on career choice Questionnaire” (IVSOCCQ) and this was developed by the researchers. Five null hypotheses were generated and tested using the t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). All hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significant. The findings revealed that most of the respondents agreed that vocational subjects influenced their career choice by stimulating their interest towards vocational profession. No significant difference was found in the influence of vocational subjects on career choice on the basis of gender, age, and religion and parents educational qualifications. However, a significant difference was discovered on the basis of school type. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that Government should employ trained teachers to teach vocational subjects in schools. It has been discovered that most secondary schools do not have competent hands to handle these subjects. The establishment of counselling centres in secondary schools cannot be overemphasized. These counsellors can assist students in making the right choice of career.Item Job seeking strategies employed by educated youth in Nigeria.(Counselling Association of Nigeria, 2015) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Adegoke, A.A; Dada, M.FThe study examined job seeking strategies employed by educated youth in Nigeria. The descriptive survey method was used and data were collected through the administration of an instrument titled “Job Seeking Strategies Employed by Educated Youths Questionnaire” (JSSEEYQ). A multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted in selecting the respondents that participated in the study. At the first stage, a cluster of six geo-political zones was considered. The purposive sampling technique was adopted to select five out of the six geopolitical zones based on population and location. Two states were randomly selected in each of the five geo-political Zones and the capital cities of each of these states were purposively selected as well. This is because most job seekers often migrate to cities in search of employment. The snowball sampling procedure, which could be referred to as chain referral sampling, was used to select 400 respondents across the various states. Responses from the respondents were analyzed using percentages, means, frequency, t- test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). All null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The major findings of this study showed that there was no significant difference in the job seeking strategies employed by educated youths in Nigeria on the basis of religion. However, a significant difference was found on the basis of gender, age, educational qualification and on whether they had ever visited a career counsellor. The implication of this study for counseling, among others, is that counsellors should intensify efforts at organizing enlightenment programmes on strategies that enhances job seekers’ ability to secure employment. It was also recommended that government should do more in terms of providing employment for the youths. Job seekers should endeavor to regularly update their knowledge in their field of study so that they can always be relevant.Item Parenting interactive styles that enhances self-esteem as expressed by in-school adolescents in Ilorin Metropolis.(the Faculty of Education, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria, 2018) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Akanni, H.O; Adebayo, D.OThe purpose of this study was to look at the parenting interactive styles that enhances self-esteem as expressed by in-school adolescents in Ilorin metropolis. The target population for this study comprised of all in-school adolescents in the various secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis. The purposive sampling technique was used to select three large secondary schools from each of the three Local Government which constitute Ilorin Metropolis(Ilorin south, Ilorin west, Ilorin East). After then, 250 in-school adolescents were randomly selected from the selected school. Five research questions were formulated and four hypotheses were generated respectively to guide the conduct of this study. Data were gathered using researchers designed instrument titled“Parenting Styles and Self- Esteem of In-school Adolescents Questionnaire” (PSSEA). Data were analyse using t-test and Analysis of variance (ANOVA), all hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. The result showed that authoritative parenting interactive styles enhances self-esteem of adolescent, The findings further showed that there was no significant difference in the parenting interactive styles that enhances self-esteem as expressed by in-school adolescents in Ilorin metropolis based on gender, age and religion. However, a significant difference was found on the basis of class type. It was therefore recommended that the parents should be encouraged to adopt the best parenting practices in the upbringing of their children. Counsellors should also organize regular seminars and conferences for parents in order to enlighten them on the importance of adopting good parenting practices in their homes.Item Perception of factors responsible for failure of WAEC examination by secondary school students in Kwara State, Nigeria.(Centre Point Journal, 2013) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Adegoke, A.A; Biobaku, E.TThis study was conducted to investigate the perception of factors responsible for failure in West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) by secondary school students in Kwara State, Nigeria. The descriptive survey research design was used by the researchers for the study. The researchers randomly selected two hundred and ten (210) senior secondary school students from the three senatorial districts of Kwara State. The questionnaire titled “Factors Responsible for Failure in WAEC Examinations Questionnaire” (FRFWEQ) was administered by the researchers with the help of trained assistance to the respondents in order to elicit information from the sampled respondents. The items of the questionnaire were content validated and test re-test method was used to determine the reliability coefficient of 0.73. The perceived major factors responsible for failure in WAEC examinations by the respondents include: non-availability of updated textbooks, unconducive environment for learning, and reliance on examination malpractice among others. Simple percentages using pictorial charts were used to analyze the demographic data, while t-test and Analysis of Variance were used to analyze the four generated hypotheses. There were no significant differences found in the perception of factors responsible for failure in WAEC examinations by secondary school students in Kwara State on the basis of age, gender and religious affiliation. However a significant difference was found in the perception of factors responsible for failure in WAEC examinations by secondary school students in Kwara State on the basis of school type. As such, the government should ensure that secondary schools are well equipped to prepare students ahead of public examinations especially WAEC, while qualified and experienced teachers should be recruited to teach students preparing for the examinations.Item Prospects and Problems of Counselling Programmes in Universal Basic Education in Ilorin, Nigeria(Kisubi Brothers University, 2015) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Itodo, S.A; Adegoke, A.A; Ogungbade, O. KThis study investigated secondary school principals’ perception of the problems and prospects of counselling programmes in Universal Basic Education (UBE) in Ilorin metropolis. A total of 200 respondents participated in the study. The major instrument used in collecting data was titled “Problems and Prospects of counselling in UBE Questionnaire” (PPCUBEQ). Data were analysed using percentages, means, frequency counts, ANOVA and t-test statistical tools. The null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. The study shows that there were no significant differences in the respondent’s perception of the problems of counselling in UBE on the basis of gender. However, a significant difference was found on the basis of educational qualification and length of service experience. Respondents did not differ in their perception of the prospects of on the basis of gender, educational qualification and length of years in service. It is, therefore, recommended that counsellors should organise enlightenment programmes for principals on the importance of counselling.Item Psychosocial consequences of stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS as perceived by undergraduates of University of Ilorin, Kwara State Nigeria.(Department of Science Education, Federal University of Technology, Minna. Nigeria, 2015) Bolu-Steve, F.N; Peleowo, D.OThe main focus of this study was to investigate the psychosocial consequences of Stigmatization on people living with HIV/AIDS as perceived by undergraduate of University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. In other to achieve this objective, a questionnaire titled Psychosocial Consequences of Stigmatization of PLWA Questionnaire (PCSPQ) was administered to 500 undergraduate students of University of Ilorin. Items on this instrument were adapted. The questionnaire was divided into two sections. Section A contained the demographic data while section B was designed to elicit information on the Psychosocial Consequence of Stigmatization of People Living with HIV/AIDS. The Four-Point Likert type response format was adopted for use in section B as thus; Strongly Agree - 4points, Agree - 3 points, Disagree - 2 points and strongly Disagree-1 point. A reliability co-efficient of 0.60 was obtained; hence the instrument was statistically reliable. The descriptive survey method was adopted for this study.The age range were 16-21 years and above. Five faculties were randomly selected out of the fourteen (14) faculties in the University, using the dip-hart method. They include; Faculties of Education, Business and Social Sciences, Art, Science and Communication and Information Science. Simple random sampling technique was employed in selecting one hundred respondents from each of these Faculties. In carrying out the research, five null hypotheses were generated and tested using the t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical methods at 0.05 alpha level of significance. Frequency counts, item by item analysis, rank order, simple percentages and mean score of items were also used in the data analysis. The finding of this study shows that the psychosocial consequence of stigmatization on people living with HIV is frustration. From the testing of the hypotheses, it was found that, there was no significant difference in the perception of male and female respondents on the psychosocial consequences of stigmatization of PLWA. Also respondents did not differ in their perception on the basis of class level, ethnicity and religion. However, a significant difference was found on the basis of age. Based on these findings, it was recommended that School authorities should provide adequate education to students on facts about stigmatization as well as the consequences of stigmatization on PLWA. An instrument titled Academic Stress and Coping Strategies Questionnaire (ASCSQ) was administered on 320 students of the University. The Researchers’ developed questionnaire has three sections. Section A contained the demographic data while section B elicited information on sources of Academic Stress.Section C contained items on coping strategies. The researchers then selected 320 respondents using simple random sampling technique. Four null hypotheses were formulated and tested using the t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical methods at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The findings of this study showed that the major source of academic stress among respondents was when there are various assignments to be completed. There was significant difference in the sources of academic stress among the respondents on the bases of gender. However, respondents did not differ in their coping strategies on the basis of gender and, age. Based on these findings, it was recommended that Counsellors should provide necessary information on variety of ways in which students can manage academic stress.
