Item Access to Tablet Portable Computers and Undergraduates Reading Culture: The experience of a Nigerian University.(Universitatea "Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Romania, 2015) Bello, M.B; Daramola, D.S; Yusuf, A.; Amali, I.O.O.This paper examines the use of tablet personal computers (PCs) and how they interfere with Nigerian undergraduates reading culture and love for educational books. The study adopts a descriptive research design. The University of Ilorin undergraduates constitute the population for this study while 200 level students of three faculties across the university constitute the target population. Stratified sampling technique was used to sample the needed respondents. A researchers’ designed questionnaire was use for data collection. The collected data was analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that access to tablet computer influence the undergraduate reading culture. Also, 55.7% of 200 level undergraduates read more electronic materials on their tablet computer than printed texts. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that students should be encouraged to visit the library and read textbooks since there is certain fundamental knowledge that might not be accessible on the net.Item Assessment of the perception of University undergraduates’ students as regards effect of Economic Recession on University undergraduates’ motivation to learning(Department of Education, Gombe State University., 2018) Bello, M.B; Oniye, R.K; Okafor, I.P.; Ajayi, O.B.The study investigated the effect of the contemporary economic recession on university undergraduates in three selected Universities in Nigeria. A descriptive form of the survey was employed. 727 undergraduates from 300 and 400 levels in the three Universities were sampled using stratified sampling techniques. A 13 items Likert-scale questionnaire titled “Assessment of effects of economic recession on University Undergraduates” with psychometric properties of content validity and reliability index of 0.78 was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics were used to answer the research questions, the findings revealed that economic recession affects university undergraduates’ motivation to learning. Students are forced to engage in antisocial behaviour in order to meet needs during the period of economic recession and participate less in extra-curricular activities. Based on these findings, it was recommended among others that government should as a matter of urgency address the lingering economic recession as it has anuntold effect on undergraduate students learning.Item Creativity in teaching: The role of information and communication technology(Department of Sociology Osun State University, Osogbo, Okuku Campus, 2016-01) Bello, M.B; Daramola, D.S.; Amali, I.O.ONations of the world today invest heavily on human capital development through qualitative and well planned educational system to achieve success and prosperity of individuals and that of the world at large. To this end this paper examined how Information and Communication Technology support creativity in teaching, as this would break barriers in learners becoming adaptable to a range of situations become independent in their learning and thinking skills. This paper discussed the concept and theory of creativity, benefits of creative teaching, how teachers can promote creativity in the classroom, barriers to been creative, the concept of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and how it promotes creativity. Recommendations and conclusion were also discussed.Item Forty-two years of diploma disease: Postgraduate students’ assessment(Department of Social Sciences Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2019-01) Bello, M.BThe study adopted a descriptive survey design, The target populations were postgraduate students from Universities in the public in three states of Nigeria (Kwara-University of Ilorin, Sokoto- Usmanu Dan Fordiyo University and Oyo- University of Ibadan). A multistage sampling technique was adopted in the selection of the respondents, the first stage; a purposive sampling technique was employed in the selection of all the three federal Universities, Secondly, the stratified sampling method was also adopted for sampling faculties in these four sampled Universities. Thirdly, proportionate sampling technique was adopted for the selection of a total of 1,275 respondents out of 8,291. A 22 items three point-Likert scale researchers’ designed questionnaire entitled “Postgraduate students Assessment on the Diploma Disease Forty-two years Questionnaire ” with psychometric properties of 0.66 was used for eliciting the needed data from the respondents. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of a pie chart, frequency counts, and percentage. The findings revealed that after 42 years of Dore’s discovery, diploma disease is still on in the Nigerian education system, it causes, consequences and ways of combating it which Dore advocated were all in consonance with Dores’ analysis. Based on these, therefore, it was recommended among others that, there is a need for the government and private employers to lay more emphasis on capabilities, skills, and ability of job seekers to applied learned knowledge into practice when recruiting for employment.Item GENDER SENSITIVITY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: A REPRESENTATION FROM MACMILLAN SOCIAL STUDIES TEXTBOOKS FOR BASIC EDUCATION IN NIGERIA(Department of Science Education, School of Science and Science Education, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria, 2021-09) Bello, M.BThis study was conducted to describe the representation of gender in lower and middle Basic Schools 1 to 6 Macmillan Social Studies textbooks in Nigeria. The study is descriptive design of survey. An adopted Gendered Representation Inventory (GRI) was the instrument used for the analysis. Frequency count and percentages with a pie chart was used in the study. The results showed that Social Studies textbooks (Macmillan) gender bias with males outnumbering females in terms of picture representation, professional, social status among others. Consequently, it was recommended that the preparation of Nigerian Social Studies Textbooks should be gender-sensitive. Nigerian textbook writers and Social Studies textbook should also portray women and female children’s roles and responsibilities beyond domestic activities.Item In search of a more effective strategy using 5Es Instructional model to teach civic education in senior secondary schools in Ilorin, Nigeria(International Assembly of the National Council for Social Studies, United State of America, 2018) Yusuf, A; Bello, M.B; Odutayo, A.OThe sociopolitical and economic structure of Nigeria is being threatened by youth incivility, while civic virtues in all spheres of life are gradually declining. This study examined the effects of the 5Es instructional strategy on the literacy scores of students in Civic Education. A research question was raised with the corresponding hypothesis. Two intact classes in two different schools were selected for this study from the available secondary schools. Seventy-seven students participated in the study, in which the experimental group consisted of 39 students while the control group consisted of 38 students. The 50-item multiple-choice objective Civic Education Literacy Test (CELT) was used for collecting data. The validated CELT was tested for reliability, and a value of 0.68 was obtained. Analysis of Covariance was used in determining the significant differences between the two groups. The results revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest literacy scores of students taught Civic Education using the 5Es instructional strategy. This study made use of the descriptive survey method. 1150 farmers and non-farmers were sampled using a multi-stage sampling technique. A researcher-designed questionnaire, interview schedule and observation technique were used for data collection. Mean rating and chi-square were used for data analysis. The results showed that schooling and human capital development (SHCD) had disorientated agro-based work-force in rural communities of Southern Benue, which was ranked 1st with a mean score of 29.6 and the diversion of community resources towards schooling and human capital development (SHCD) instead of farm-ing in rural communities of Southern Benue was ranked 2ⁿd with a mean of 28.8. Also, insignificant difference was found in the perspectives of farmers and non-farmers concerning the impacts of schooling and human-capital development on agro-based rural communities of Southern Benue, Nigeria. It was, therefore, concluded that schooling and human-capital development have created economic and social challenges, not development in the agro-based rural communities of Southern Benue, Nigeria. It is recommended that there is a need for the Government’s strong commitment to addressing the paradox created by schooling in the human input used for sustaining productivity in the agro-based rural communities of Southern Benue, Nigeria.Item Influence of Classroom Conduciveness on Students and Teachers’ attitude towards lessons’ attendance in Kwara South Senatorial District(Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, 2020) Bello, M.BThe study assessed the influence of classroom conduciveness on students' and teachers’ attitude towards lessons’ attendance in Senior School in Kwara South senatorial district. A descriptive form of survey design was adopted. The multistage sampling procedure was employed in sampling the respondents, which are the senior school II students and teachers from 33 public schools. One thousand one hundred and seventy-six students and teachers were proportionately sampled from 3,609. A – 10 items four-points-Likert scale Researchers’ designed questionnaire was adopted to elicit data, entitled “Teachers and Students Assessment of the Influence of Class Conduciveness on their Attitude towards lesson attendance (TSAICCATLA)”. The mean, standard deviation and z-test at 0.05 alpha level were used in the analysis of the data. The findings revealed that a classroom with poor physical structures of building, ceiling, ventilation, and lighting negatively affects both the teachers and students’ attitude and attendance to lessons. Likewise, Poor classroom facilities that is furniture and fan among others also constituted negative influence on teachers and students attitude to attendance to lessons and lastly, no significant difference existed in the assessment of both the teachers' and students' attitude towards lesson attendance in Kwara south senatorial district. It was classroom conduciveness which influenced students’ and teachers’ attitudes. Thus, it was recommended, that a school administrator should make classrooms conducive to facilitate effective teaching and learning.Item Lecturers’ assessment of effectiveness of computer based test in the training of pre-service teachers in Nigeria(Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria., 2015-05) Bello, M.B; Yusuf, A; Amali, I.O.O.; Daramola, D.S.The purpose of the study was to find out the lecturers’ assessment of the effectiveness of Computer Based Test in the training of pre-service teachers in Nigeria. This is a descriptive research of a survey type using questionnaire. The sample for this study included randomly selected lecturers 201 out of 314 lecturers from two purposively sampled universities. A researcher-designed questionnaire for lecturers was used to collect the data. Mean was employed to answer the research questions using 2.5 as the basis to determine the strength or otherwise of the statement while the hypotheses were tested using chi-square at 0.05 level of significance. Among the findings, it was found that the use of computer-based test was considered effective and adequate for assessing pre-service teachers in cognitive and psychomotor domains. Lecturers from University of Ilorin and University of Lagos differed significantly in their assessment of effectiveness of CBT in the training of pre-service teacher in Nigeria. However, lecturers did not defer in their assessment of the effectiveness of CBT in the training of pre-service teachers in Nigeria based on gender and status. It was recommended that pre-service teachers should be taught using ICT to improve their computer skills. Other alternative to multiple- choice response CBT questions should be used for assessment. This would help in the development of cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.Item Mother tongue as a medium instruction: Lower basic school teachers’ perception(Social Studies Association of Nigeria, 2016-04) Yusuf, A; Bello, M.B; Obafemi, K.E.The purpose of the study was to find out the perception of lower basic school teachers on the use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction. A total of two hundred and twenty-one (221) lower basic school teachers were randomly selected from eighty-one (81) Basic Schools in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State. One hundred and one (101) teachers were male while one hundred and twenty (120) teachers were female. A researchers’ designed questionnaire titled, “Questionnaire on Caregivers’ Perception of Play as a Way of Learning” (QCPPWL) was used to obtain the data for this study. The data were collected using a researcher-designed questionnaire and was analysed with the use frequency count, percentage, t-test and Analysis of Variance(ANOVA). The findings revealed that lower basic school teachers had positive perception on the use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction. The findings also showed that there was no significant difference in the perceptions of male and female lower basic school teachers on the use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction. It was also unfolded that school type and teaching experience had significant influence on the perception of lower basic school teachers on the use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction. Among others, it was recommended that government should ensure that the use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction at the lower basic level was implemented.Item An Overview of Nigerian Universities’ Presence on Social Media Platforms(University of Sir Jayewarddenepura, Sri Lanka., 2017) Amali, I.O.O; Bello, M.B; Akintola, Mubarak; Tilakasiri, S. L.This study is an online survey on the presence of Nigerian universities on social media platforms. The purpose of the paper was to examine the level of presence of Nigerian Universities on five social media platforms which include: Face book, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and Google+. Three research questions were generated and one null hypothesis was formulated for this study. In the methodology, the internet served as the primary source of data, while Nigerian universities’ websites were used as secondary sources. All 129 accredited Nigerian Universities by the National Universities Commission were sampled for this study. Descriptive statistics (Percentage, Mean Rating and Standard Deviation) were used to answer research questions 1 and 2 while inferential statistics (Chi-Square) was used to test and analyse the null hypothesis. Report of Micaiah (2014) on Social Media Awareness in Nigeria Education which states that Nigerian universities’ presence on social media is minimal, was used as a guide; its methodology and data were also adapted for this study. The result showed that Nigerian Universities’ presence on social media platforms was 19% which is below par, compared to the unprecedented social media user base among Nigerian university students. In the analysis of the hypothesis, it was revealed that university ownership does not significantly determine the presence of Nigerian universities on social media platforms. It thus recommends that universities in Nigeria should as a matter of urgency, create a central unit of social media services to manage all necessary social media activities of their institutions, and to heighten Nigerian Universities’ presence on social media platforms which would create a mindset on educational goals and attainment among academics and students in Nigeria.Item Perception of economics undergraduate on non-usage of university's ICT platform in teaching economics in university of Ilorin(Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Descriptive research of survey type was adopted in this study. The population of this study consists of all Economics undergraduate in the departments of Economic and Economics Education (of the social sciences education department) which is estimated at 937 students. A sample of 278 respondents was drawn randomly in this study. A Researcher’s Designed questionnaire with psychometric properties of content validity and 0.71r was used to elicit the needed. Data collected were analyzed with descriptive statistics of frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviation while the hypotheses formulated were tested using inferential statistics of t-test and ANOVA at 0.05 alpha levels. The study revealed that lecturer’s philosophy, lack of appropriate skills, incompatible classroom environment, limited lecture hours and non-satisfaction with ICT results, among others are perceived as reasons for non-usage of ICT platforms for teaching economics. On this basis, the study investigated the relationship between parental background and civic education students’ performance towards sustainable development in Ilorin South Local Government area. This study focused on variables such as; parental occupation, parental level of education and family size. Proportionate sampling technique was adopted for selection of 234 respondents out of 633. A researchers’ designed questionnaire with psychometrics properties of content validity and 0.76 reliability index was used to elicit the needed data from the respondents. Descriptive statistical tools were used to analyze the collected data. The findings revealed that 59% respondents passed civic education in their last external examination while 41% failed the subject. The findings showed that there was a positive relationship between parental background and performance of Civic Education students’ in the area. As a result of these findings, it was recommended that parents should be more passionate, and they should be ready to play significant roles in their children academic performance.Item Relationship between the use of mobile phones and students’ moral character in senior secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis(Faculty of Education Niger Delta University Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, Nigeria., 2018-10) Bello, M.B; Yusuf, A.; Obimuyiwa, G.; Adeoye, A.Y.This study examined the relationship between the use of mobile phones and students’ moral characters in senior secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis of Kwara State, Nigeria. The study population consisted of selected staffs of two boarding secondary schools in Ilorin. One hundred and eight staff was sampled proportionately through purposive sampling technique of 80% of the staff strength of the three selected schools. A 20-item researchers' designed questionnaire which consisted of two sections with construct validity and 0.69 reliability index was used to elicit the needed data from the respondents. The data collected were analyzed using mean, frequency table, percentage, standard deviation and Spearman's rho which was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The findings revealed that usage of mobile phones by students in senior secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis has negative effects on their moral character. The hypothesis showed that antisocial character of students in boarding secondary school is positively related to mobile phone usage. Base on the finding of the study, it was recommended among others that, there should be only one fixed telephone to be used by every student when the need to communicate with parents/guardians arises without secret discussion. The prohibition of mobile phone usage by students should cover the entire school premises rather than be being limited to classroom and students should be closely monitored by parents/guardians and school authority for the undesirable change in characters.Item Teachers’ and parents’ assessment of the inclusive education of the Almajiri and education for all(Association of Nigerian Teachers (ASSONT), Imo State University, Owerri, Imo State, 2013-12) Muhammad, R.; Yusuf, A.; Bello, M.BThis paper investigated Teachers and parents’ assessment of the inclusive education of the Almajiri and Education for All in Nigeria. The population for this study consisted of all teachers (Mallams of the Almajiri School) and parents in the North-Western Geo-political zone of Nigeria; the target population was the teachers (Mallams) and parents of the Almajiri School, and also lecturers in Shehu Shagaria College of Education. 300 samples were randomly selected. The descriptive research survey type was employed; the instrument used was a 10-item structured researcher designed set of questionnaire, subjected to content validity with a test-retest technique of three weeks after the first administration to show its reliability. The two scores obtained were correlated using Pearson statistics for reliability index and resulted in 0.80; the hypotheses were tested using t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The finding showed no significant difference in the assessment of teachers and parents on the objectives of the inclusive education of the almajiri and the achievement of education for all in Nigeria,. The study recommends that, the government should ensure adequate public enlightenment about the scheme so as to increase people’s awareness. The teachers (Ulamas) should be carried along in the design of the curriculum; School Based Management Committee should also be formed. Finally, special Northern Nigeria Trust Fund should be created to fund the inclusive education of the Almajiri and this should be well supported by the Federal Government.
