Item Access to Tablet Portable Computers and Undergraduates Reading Culture: The experience of a Nigerian University.(Universitatea "Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Romania, 2015) Bello, M.B; Daramola, D.S; Yusuf, A.; Amali, I.O.O.This paper examines the use of tablet personal computers (PCs) and how they interfere with Nigerian undergraduates reading culture and love for educational books. The study adopts a descriptive research design. The University of Ilorin undergraduates constitute the population for this study while 200 level students of three faculties across the university constitute the target population. Stratified sampling technique was used to sample the needed respondents. A researchers’ designed questionnaire was use for data collection. The collected data was analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that access to tablet computer influence the undergraduate reading culture. Also, 55.7% of 200 level undergraduates read more electronic materials on their tablet computer than printed texts. Specifically, the study investigated the creativity level of hearing and hearing-impaired students. Also, a relationship between gender and onset of hearing loss and students’ creativity level were found out. A descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. A purposive sampling technique was used to sample a total of 248 second year students Nigerian Certification in Education (NCE II) of the School of Education who participated in the study. A researcher-designed questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.76 was used to collect data for the study. The Findings showed that the creativity level of hearing-impaired students is significantly higher compared to their hearing peer. It was revealed that female hearing impaired students significantly show a higher level of creativity than their male peer. Also, post-lingual hearing-impaired students are significantly higher in creativity level than their pre-lingua peers. Critical thinking involves cognitive activities associated with using the mind. It allows Students to excel and achieve intellectual freedom thereby becoming a functional member of the society. This study investigated Creativity Level of Hearing Impaired and Hearing Students of Federal College of Education, Oyo. Specifically, the study investigated the creativity level of hearing and hearing-impaired students. Also, the relationship between gender and onset of hearing Loss and students’ creativity level were found out. A descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. The collected data were analyzed using mean and t-test statistics at 0.05 alpha level. The Findings showed that the creativity level of hearing-impaired students is significantly higher compared to their hearing counterparts. It was revealed that female hearing impaired students significantly show a higher level of creativity than their male counterpart. Also post-lingual hearing impaired students are significantly higher in creativity level than their pre-lingua counterparts. Based on these findings, it was recommended that mainstreaming approach of providing education services adopted by Federal College of Education Oyo should be strengthened and adopted in all Institutions where hearing and hearing impaired attend. Also, healthy competition as against stigmatization should be encouraged between hearing impaired and their hearing counterparts to his/her maximum creative thinking level.Item ILORIN EMIRATE TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION OF GROUP DYNAMICS CLASSROOM SEATING ARRANGEMENT IN UPPER BASIC SCHOOLS AS A MEANS OF PROMOTING VIOLENCE- FREE SOCIETY(National association of sociologists of education in Nigeria. B.; Isiaka, I.This paper investigates the Ilorin Emirate teachers’ perception of group dynamics classroom seating arrangement as a means of promoting violence- free society. 357 teachers were randomly selected from 20 Upper Basic Schools in Ilorin Emirate. Researchers designed questionnaire with content validity and 0.67 reliability index was used to elicit the needed data for the study. The data collected was analyzed using mean rating, t-test and ANOVA. Among others, it was discovered that the respondents had positive perception of group dynamics classroom seating arrangement as a means of promoting violence- free society. From the research hypotheses tested, the findings revealed that there was no significant difference in the teachers’ perception of group dynamics classroom seating arrangement as a means of promoting violence- free society based on gender, experience, ethnicity and school type. The study recommended that, teacher should employ classroom learning structure that will promote tolerance, self- respect, respect for others, and their dignity as well as development of social interaction among the diverse ethnic groups in Nigeria.Item Influence of domestic works on female students’ academic performance in upper-basic schools in Kwara State, Nigeria.(Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt, 2018) Amali, I.O.O.; Bello, M.B.; Adeoye, G. O.In Nigeria, domestic works are socially accepted to be part of daily activities that are engaged by female children. This study therefore examined the influence of domestic work on female students’ academic performance in Upper-Basic Schools in Kwara State, Nigeria. This study made use of descriptive research design. The population for this study were all upper-basic female students from public schools in Kwara State, Nigeria. 900 upper basic female students were sampled for this study using a multi-stage sampling technique. Researchers’ developed questionnaire with a reliability coefficient 0.63 was used to obtain data on the types and extent of students’ engagement in domestic works while a pro forma was used to obtain students’ academic performance in upper-basic schools. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of percentage, mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and inferential statistics of chi-square was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that female students are daily engaged in different types of domestic works such as running errands, washing of cloths, sweeping, fetching of water, washing of plates and caring for babies/children, etc. all which interfere with their academic studies and thereby resulting in less academic performance among female students in Kwara State. This study adopted descriptive survey method. Six faculties were randomly selected from the 13faculties in the University while200 undergraduate students were sampled across these selected faculties using simple random sampling technique. Researchers’ designed questionnaire was used for data collection while mean rating, t-test and ANOVA were used for data analysis. The findings of this study revealed that internet usage among undergraduate students of University of Ilorin had positively influenced their academic performance in their various disciplines though; it distracts students’ attentions and prevents them from attending lectures regularly. It was also found that students have not been able to use internet to develop networking website that could help them in their academic activities. Insignificant difference was found to exist in the influence of internet usage on the academic performance of undergraduate students of University of Ilorin on the basis of gender and age. However, a significant difference was found on the basis of their faculty and educational level. As such it was recommended that school administrators and counselors should provide proper guidance to students on appropriate ways of using the internet to positively enhance academic performance of undergraduates of University of Ilorin.Item Lecturers’ assessment of effectiveness of computer based test in the training of pre-service teachers in Nigeria(Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria., 2015-05) Bello, M.B; Yusuf, A; Amali, I.O.O.; Daramola, D.S.The purpose of the study was to find out the lecturers’ assessment of the effectiveness of Computer Based Test in the training of pre-service teachers in Nigeria. This is a descriptive research of a survey type using questionnaire. The sample for this study included randomly selected lecturers 201 out of 314 lecturers from two purposively sampled universities. A researcher-designed questionnaire for lecturers was used to collect the data. Mean was employed to answer the research questions using 2.5 as the basis to determine the strength or otherwise of the statement while the hypotheses were tested using chi-square at 0.05 level of significance. Among the findings, it was found that the use of computer-based test was considered effective and adequate for assessing pre-service teachers in cognitive and psychomotor domains. Lecturers from University of Ilorin and University of Lagos differed significantly in their assessment of effectiveness of CBT in the training of pre-service teacher in Nigeria. However, lecturers did not defer in their assessment of the effectiveness of CBT in the training of pre-service teachers in Nigeria based on gender and status. It was recommended that pre-service teachers should be taught using ICT to improve their computer skills. Other alternative to multiple- choice response CBT questions should be used for assessment. This would help in the development of cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.Item Meeting the challenge of accessibility and utilization of modern instructional materials in rural secondary schools in Nigeria(Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, 2014) Amali, I.O.O.The world is now globalised by means of information and communication technology (I.C.T). This paper examines the plight of rural secondary schools in Nigeria towards access to modern instructional materials. It addresses the problems of lack of or inadequacy of modern instructional materials for use in Nigeria rural secondary schools in relation to social equity and educational opportunities for individuals, society and the Nigeria nation. Descriptive research of survey type was adopted in this study. The study was a descriptive design of survey, a sample of 150 primary schools were selected using simple random procedure out of a total population of 1,837 primary school teachers` in Ilorin West Local Government Area. A 10 items researchers designed questionnaire with psychometric properties of content validity, and 0.65 reliability index was used to elicit the needed data from the respondents. Frequency counts and percentage were used for answering the research questions. The findings of the study showed that; majority (62.67%)of the teachers did not know that head injuries, nutritional deprivation and exposure to toxic substances can contribute to learning disabilities. Also a good percentage (51.3%) of the teachers did not know that children with learning disabilities do have problem understanding body language and facial expression. Although corrupt practices have been a recurring decimal in the nation’s political history, its rate and dimension since the resurgence of civil rule in 1999 is going beyond acceptable level in the country. The politicians are increasingly thinking that political office is a sure means of getting rich and they are not concerned about the impact of their unethical behaviours on the society. There have been waves of social restructuring and reforming to curb the corruption syndrome but the increasing social malaise calls for a re-examination of anti-corruption strategy. This paper, thus, focuses on character and moral education of the youths as a new paradigm for tackling corruption in Nigeria so as to attain sustainable development.Item Relevance of teacher education in the Nigeria new secondary school curriculum: A myth or reality(Department of Teacher Education, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, 2012-04) Amali, I.O.O.; Bello, M.B.This paper examines the relevance of teacher education in Nigeria in relation to the challenges imposed by the introduction of the new secondary school curriculum (2011). It highlights teachers’ roles in actualizing the implementation of the new curriculum and the challenges in respect of the opportunities in acquiring sufficient knowledge and understanding on the part of the would-be teachers for the new programmes as contained in the new curriculum. Specifically, it places emphasis on the areas of pedagogy and learning for the benefits of the learners in respect of their development for practical skills and competence required in the new curriculum. It made suggestions and concludes that the relevance of teacher education that would facilitate quality assurance for the teachers, the learners and the nation at large should not be undermined. The objective is to draw attention to the collaborative mandates ascribed to teachers to ensure fulfilling their obligations in the successful implementation of the policy. This study addresses the educational and social relevance of pre-primary education in Nigeria, especially in respect to cognitive, emotional and social development of Nigerian children. In view of its societal relevance, this study advocates for a desirable and necessary educational process and provides guidelines on teachers preparation, supply and motivation which are desirable for ensuring successful implementation of pre-primary education policy in Nigeria. It also identified teachers’ constraints, show the way forward that would ensure that teachers achieve their mandates in the successful implementation of the policy objectives. A study like this is relevant to the understanding of the objectives of pre-primary education as contained in the National Policy of Education and could contribute to the process of developing a more effective approach to address the problem of achieving the objectives of the policy in Nigeria. It recommends a strong commitment of federal, state and local governments education authorities to facilitate the successful implementation of the policy objectivesItem Teachers’ emotional intelligence and moral character as predictors of secondary school students’ moral character in Ilorin South, Nigeria.(Faculties of Education in University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland), Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica (Slovak Republic) and University of Ostrava (Czech Republic), 2017) Bello, M.B.; Yusuf, A.; Amali, I.O.O.This study examines secondary school teachers’ level of emotional intelligence and their moral character as predictors of moral character among secondary school students in Ilorin South LGA, Kwara State. 106 teachers and 318 students from 20 secondary schools were purposively sampled for the study. data collected were analysed using mean-scores, standard-deviation and multiple-regression. The study revealed that secondary school teachers’ emotional intelligence predicts secondary school students’ moral character. It was recommended that there is a need for teaching emotional intelligence as a foundation course at all the teacher training institutions in Nigeria.
