    Education and employment in Nigeria has gone through various challenges. Analysis of the Nigerian education sectors right from the missionary to date reveals challenges in employment underemployment and unemployment of its citizens, it was observed that the education Nigerians received from the missionaries was to serve their purposes. This type of education only meant to produce proud, lazy people who dislike manual labor and prefer white collar jobs.

    Problem and Prospect of Teaching History in Secondary Schools in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria.

    This study examined problems and prospects of teaching History in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria. In this study, differences in the perceived problems and prospects of teaching History on the basis of gender, teaching qualifications and experience were also examined. This study made use of descriptive survey method. The population for this study were all senior secondary school History teachers in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State. 40 teachers were sampled for the study using simple random sampling technique. A researcher’ self-developed questionnaire was used for data collection while the data collected for this study were analysed using the percentage and mean rating to answer the research questions while independent t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to test the hypotheses postulated for this study at 0.05 level of significance. Findings from this study revealed that the problems of teaching history are teachers’ inadequate knowledge of the subject matter, inadequate instructional materials, excessive history curriculum content, inadequate time allotted for teaching activities; poor implementation of history curriculum. The prospects of History have been affirmed to help the student to gain deeper understanding of how the world around them came to be. It was also found that there is no discrepancy in the perceived problems and prospects of teaching history on the basis of teachers’ gender, qualifications and teaching experience. It was therefore recommended among others that, there is need for Government to make available and adequate up-to-date reading materials for the teachers and students so as to facilitate the teaching and learning of history in Senior Secondary Schools; there is need to provide teacher-support instructional materials that are totally inclusive of what is required to present and support the lesson.

    Strategies for improving Students Low Enrolment in Senior Secondary Schools History in Kwara State, Nigeria

    History as a subject in Nigerian secondary schools is not only significant for its role as an instrument of nation building rather it instills creative, imaginative and critical thinking skills on the learners. However, as important as History is, the enrolment rate is still low in Nigerian secondary schools. Therefore, this study examined teachers’ perceived strategies for improving students’ low enrolment in Senior Secondary School History in Kwara State. Descriptive survey research design was employed in the study while the population consisted of all Senior Secondary School teachers in Kwara State. 450 teachers were randomly sampled for the study using multistage sampling techniques. A researchers’ self-developed questionnaire titled, Strategies for Improving Students’ Low Enrolment in Senior Secondary School History (SISLESHQ) was used for data collection. The Cronbach Alpha statistics was used to determine a reliability index of 0.79 while the data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of mean and rank order to answer research question and inferential statistics of t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings from this study revealed that the perceived strategies for improving students’ low enrolment in Senior Secondary School History in Kwara State, Nigeria are by making History as a core subject for Arts students; making History as a general/optional for all SSS students to have knowledge of the past events of their immediate community and at large among others. There was a statistically significant difference in teachers’ perceived strategies for improving students’ low enrolment in Senior Secondary School History based on teaching qualifications in Kwara State, Nigeria. It was therefore recommended among others that History should be made a core subject for Arts students and a general/optional for other category of students; the use of modern teaching and learning techniques such as inquiry teaching technique, co-operative (e.g. think-pair-share) and competitive teaching technique (game theory), all which are learner-centeredness in History teaching and learning process should be integrated so as to increase the number of students enrolling for History
