Item Computer studies’ curriculum review: A proposal for an innovative curriculum.(Department of Science Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin., 2018) Adedokun-Shittu, N. I.This paper proposes an innovative curriculum prototype for Nigerian Computer Studies’ Curriculum (NCSC) having examined the current situation of secondary school computer studies curriculum and the need for its review. This proposal is premised on the need for the NCSC to be redirected towards being activity-based, learner-centered and contextualised. Computer studies is not a subject to be taught in an abstract sense thus, the need to be fully packed with problem-based activities for students’ immersion in computer science concepts. Learning is being clamoured for to be less of teacher-centered but learner-centered in order for students to be able to create meaning with their learning. Finally, the concept of GLOBALIZATION is hinted in this proposal to enable students link global concepts of computer studies to their immediate environment (local). This innovative computer studies curriculum proposal provides examples of how concepts in computer science are explored in human comprehensible formats and localised contents.Item The needs and direction for changes in curriculum standards for Islamic education(The international Journal of Islamic Studie, 2016) Abdul Kabir, A. I.This study describes and analyzes the Islamic concept of education, curriculum of Islamic education, sources of Islamic education, functions and importance of Islamic educational curriculum and its overall role in the process of teaching and learning. The study then seeks to elucidate a theoretical conception of ‘Islamic educational curriculum’, which takes into consideration the Qur’anic approach and Prophetic Sunnah, alongside commonly held approaches to education in Muslim history. The paper concludes that the content and scope of the Glorious Qur’an and the Prophetic Sunnah are still very relevant in building the people to survive and sustain the globalizing era. Drawing on library research method and the study of existing literature, this study intends to aid in the rethinking, and perhaps in the redesigning of curriculum of Islamic education, by first analyzing the aim and objective of Islamic education which we wish for the students to learn. The curriculum standard and some suggested changes that should be included in Islamic studies instruction are explored. The study identify a number of next steps for teachers and administrators.Item The Qur’ānic approach to the inculcation of moral values: Patterns for teacher education(University of Malaya, Malaysia, 2013) Abdul Kabir, A. I.Moral education has long been an important and intrinsic aim of learning. Schooling aims not only to make people smart, but to also make them good citizens equipped and readily prepared to exercise moral values. However, with the increased pace of change in the world today, the moral purpose of education has been relegated to the background as the vocation oriented demands of capitalist markets centered mainly around the provision of skilled individuals who are philosophically ready to fill the gap in the job-market. As a result, moral values have been overwhelmingly marginalized even by the teachers of Islamic education, and when it is taught, it is often not compatible with the nature and objective of Islāmic education. Thus, teaching Islāmic education in schools has been unable to achieve its aim, mainly due to the lack of an effective Qur’ānic based approach and methodology when teaching moral values. The present study explores the approaches used by the Qur’ān and in its historical narratives in inculcating moral values. This includes storytelling, modelling (qudwah), practical demonstration, the instruction method, the question method, conversation and dialogue, repetition, and practical demonstration. The objective is to examine how these approaches could be integrated into teacher education of moral values.Item Social studies education as a means for combating social problems in Nigerian secondary school(Universiti Tun Hussein Onn, Malaysia., 2014) Abdul Kabir, A. I.The purpose of education in Nigeria as in many other developing countries is the preparation of the individual to contribute to the development of the nation and for the transmission of the social and cultural values to new generations. Yet, the Nigerian society has been surrounded by an array of political, economic, and social crises. For this reason, Social Studies is assigned the responsibility to develop in Nigerian youth an understanding of their societal values, knowledge, values, and skills that would enable them to deal with and manage the forces of the world in which they live, and learn how to live harmoniously in the society. This study examines the contents and purposes of the Social Studies education with special reference to its ability to instil high-quality moral values and good character in students and provide them the necessary skills, abilities, and competencies, which individual students require to participate in the development of the nation. It is recommended among others the need for a thorough review of the Social Studies curriculum with emphasis on moral inculcation.Item Values in society and school: Social ills among teenagers from Islamic and Western perspectives(Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah Malaysia, 2016) Abdul Kabir, A. I.; Solihu, A. K. H.School is a formal institution that embodies a community‟s values. It educates and transmits values to ensure continuity and stability from one generation to another while preparing the youth with values that make them effective and relevant in the fast changing world. Some social problems start to develop when values taught in schools and those cherished by the community are at loggerheads. This paper examines the prevalent social ills among teenagers as a barrier to the growth and development of the nation. In an attempt to underscore the need for value education, the paper explores the relationship between values and education and then between value and character development from Islamic and Western perspectives. It then identifies some theories and opinions, along with the basic concepts of values to be addressed among the youth and teenagers. Finally, the paper suggests possible solutions for tackling social ills among teenagers.
