dc.description.abstractThis study investigated the effectiveness of Fulfulde as language of instruction in adult literacy among Nomads in Kwara State. The study adopted a pre-test post-test quasi-experimental research design to enable the researchers to obtain the performance of the learners. The paper has two (2) research questions and one (1) hypothesis to guide the study. The population for the study covered all nomadic adult learners. Twenty (20) Nomads learners were sampled using a purposive sampling technique from two adult literacy centers’ in Asa and Moro Local Government Areas in Kwara State. The participants were randomly assigned to experimental group (Fulfulde Language) and control group (English Language), were taught with detailed instructional programme in Social Studies which was designed in both languages. The researchers used 20 multiple choice questions tagged Social Studies Performance Test as the instrument. It was administered on both groups in pre-test and post-test simultaneously by the researchers and three trained research assistants that were familiar with the interpretation of the content of the instrument in the language of the immediate environment (Fulfulde language) of the respondents (Nomadic adult learners). Mean and standard deviation were used to answer research questions while Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Among the findings of the study revealed that learners instructed with Fulfulde language shown a great improvement in their performance. The study recommends that the Mass Literacy Agencies should encourage the use of mother tongue or the language of the immediate environment of the learner as the language of instruction in the post literacy and nomadic schools, by adopting the use of Fulfulde language as the medium of instruction among pastoral nomads.en_US
