dc.description.abstractPentecostals regard speaking in tongues as a manifestation of the baptism by the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 with the purpose to reach people with the gospel of Jesus Christ which is also the case in 1 Corinthians 12–14. The objective of this paper is to establish biblical position on speaking in tongues. Social scientific criticism theory was used. Data were gathered through primary and secondary sources. The paper found out that the gift is the same in both texts; however, the purpose of tongues in 1 Corinthians 12 is a gift used in the church and needing interpretation. Glossolalia is just one of the signs of an individual’s reception of the Holy Spirit, and its neither important than other gifts of the Holy Spirit, nor placing an individual higher spiritually than others who possess other gifts of the Holy Spirit.en_US
