dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT The Mining sector of the Nigeria economy has been identified as one with huge economic prospects for the country. Despite reforms by government, the sector is still faced with several challenges associated with the exploration of mineral resources. Thus, mining activities pose a serious threat to the environment and the rights of the people. Such rights include the right to life, right to health, right to water, and right to culture among others. This paper focuses on the right to health and the threats posed to it by mining activities. The paper analyses the extant laws as well as their inadequacies in the regulation of mining activities, particularly in the area of protection of the right to health of the people in mining activities. The paper argues for and then suggests a rights-based approach to mining regulation with a view to ensuring an effective legal protection of people’s health right. The paper concludes that health right should be recognized and adequately protected in the context of mining activities in all affected communities. | en_US |
