dc.description.abstractWe conducted a study in 2013 through the survey method to determine the connection between media transmission of violent and other anti-social behaviour content and the actual exhibition of violence by the Nigerian youths. Findings from 387 respondents purposively drawn from Makurdi and Ilorin affirm a wide spread media violence particularly in home videos (26%); and that though media contribute to violence (29%), frustration and poverty are more responsible for real life violence as 36 percent of the sampled population attest. Also other factors like peer and parental influence have compelling influence on youths’ violence. The study concludes that while media may reinforce youths’ violence, other factors like deprivation, frustration, peer and parental role significantly influence youths’ aggressive and violent acts in Nigeria. It recommends among other things the improvement in the socio-economic condition of youths as well as devoting more efforts at family and institutional levels in regulating what youths watch.en_US
