Abstract
Ibn Taymiyyah is one of the scholars in Islam whose death did not affect the spread of their influence and legacies. He is a scholar to be reckoned with in every aspect of Islamic studies across all ages. He wrote quite a number of works in which Al-CUbūdiyyah which this paper focuses on is one of them. One of the aspects of Islamic discourses which usually generate rumbles among the Islamic scholar is taṣawwuf on which Ibn Taymiyyah wrote to enrich the discourse and make his position known. The aim of this writing therefore is to appraise the mystical discourse of Ibn Taymiyyah in Al-CUbudiyyah and to determine their level of similarities or otherwise with those of the Sufis. The paper adopted analytical method which availed opportunity to analyse various discussions in the work in comparison with those of the Sufis. This paper revealed that Ibn Taymiyyah did not out rightly reject or condemn Sufism but also endeavour to examine the doctrines and practices therein and came up with submissions that sometimes agree with the Sufis and go against some of them at another time. It is therefore concluded that contrary to the general anti-Sufi notion which has been spread across board about Ibn Taymiyyah on Sufism, he expressed pair views (condemnation and commendation). The paper therefore recommended a further research on the other works of Ibn Taymiyyah vis-a-vis Sufism in other to have an over-view of his submissions on taṣawwuf as contained in all his works.
