A Survey of Basic Education Skills Demonstrated by Final Year Junior Secondary School Students’ in Kabba/Bunu LGA.

Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to examine the basic education skills demonstrated by final year junior secondary students in Kabb/Bunu LGA in Kogi State. The design for the study was survey that involved 289 students selected using the stratified random sampling technique. The instrument used for the study was a 20-item literacy and numeracy questionnaire and ICT and vocational tailored check list which was constructed by the researchers and validated by measurement experts. Data collected were analyzed using percentages. The study revealed that student’s demonstrated poor basic education skills with less than half of the respondents demonstrating advanced proficiency skill level and none of the respondents demonstrating advanced skills in numeracy, ICT and vocational skills. Efforts should therefore be geared towards raising the skill proficiency level of basic education graduates so as to equip them with the necessary skills for life and lifelong learning.
