Abstract

No country or community is untouched by violence. Images and accounts of violence pervade the media; it is on our streets, in our homes, schools, workplaces and institutions. However, youth has been victims, drivers and cynosure of violence right from the time immemorial, however, in explaining increasing levels of urban youth violence, this research was borne out with aim of examining the predisposing and incendiary factors responsible for the proliferation of youth violence and more importantly in Ilorin metropolis. The methodology employed focused on the disadvantaged neighbourhoods, areas surrounding higher institutions, wealthy neighbourhoods. Etc. It was pointed out that most of the urban youth violence that occurs in Ilorin happens in an uncompleted/abandoned building and usually at night. However, the findings of this research clearly labelled Poly area of Ilorin East as the most violent area of Ilorin metropolis. Furthermore, chi-square analysis performed shows that there exists a consolidated degree of association between number of youth gangs and drivers of crime and prevalent violent measure at X2 (41.490 and 43.873) in Ilorin. This research concluded by submitting some policy responses like emergency operational plan for violence, smart infrastructural technological plan, development control, public counselling and correction service as a way forward.
