Abstract

The activities of killer herdsmen have turned to serious challenges in Nigeria. This has became worrisome as hardly would a day ends without news of several attacks perpetuated by these herdsmen. Initially, it was thought to be misunderstanding between farmers and herdsmen; but, of recent, it has taken another dimension with the attack being carried out against communities and Churches. These attacks, are in no doubt, having adverse effects on security as well as the religious activities of Nigeria, thus hindering our national development. The aim of this paper is to examine the response of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to the menace of these herdsmen dastardly acts; while the objectives of this paper are to: examine how the activities of these herdsmen affected the security and National development of Nigeria; take a critical assessment of the response of CAN to the menace of these killer herdsmen; and suggest ways through which solutions can be proffered to the threat that their activities had caused to the national development. Methods adopted for this paper were historical and empirical. While the findings of this paper showed that, the activities of killer herdsmen had taken a dangerous trend within the last few years. This had led to loss of lives and properties which included farmlands and places of worship. It has also affected the development of the nation economically; and that CAN has not been able to speak collectively against the activities of these killer herdsmen both, as it seems only few members of CAN were the only voices been heard, both at national and international levels. The paper concluded by suggesting ways through which threats caused by these herdsmen could be solved for the nation to have peace which can enhance development for Nigeria.
