Abstract
Different scholars have defined Social Work on the basis of the perspectives from which the concept is appreciated. To some, Social Work is viewed as a profession concerned with helping individuals, families, groups and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. It is also seen as an endeavour that aims at assisting people to develop their skills and abilities so as to use their own resources and those of the communities within which they reside to resolve day-to-day problems. Dhavaleshwar (2016) defined Social Work as an organised profession for extending helping hands to an individual, group or community for their betterment and to sustain them to help themselves by adopting varied professional strategies. According to him, the disadvantaged sections of the society like the weaker sections, the downtrodden, orphans, etc. are considered to be in need of the profession. Social workers do provide psychological counseling, guidance and assistance in the form of helping the people’s sustainable livelihoods. A professional who works with people so that they can manage their daily lives with respect and dignity is called a ‘social worker’.
