    A Re-Appraisal of the Salafiyyah’s Discourse on Mawlidu ’n-Nabiyy
(Department of Religions, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2019-12) Oniye Olayinka Ibrahim; Yusuph Dauda Gambari
Mawlidu 'n-Nabiyy celebration is one of the most controversial issues among the Muslim scholars of various denominations. The issues around its legitimacy or otherwise have generated different reactions from the scholars, especially of Salafiyyah enclave who usually declared the celebration as a bid'ah that has enabled various abnormalities into the practice of Islam, considering the origin, ways and manners of its observation. Attempt is therefore made in this paper to appraise major issues that were raised by the Salafiyyah scholars on Mawlid. This is imperative because the celebration has become a dividing factor with polemics across board which needs to either be reduced if not totally eliminated. This paper adopted both analytical and historical methods. The former affords the opportunity to analyse various relevant works, while the latter avails the paper the privilege to trace related historical facts. The findings of this paper revealed that the basis for declaration of the celebration as bid'ah by the Salafiyyah scholars is unrealistic as there are reliable proofs that established it in Islamic sources. Also, it is discovered that the Salafiyyah's condemnation of the celebration is largely based on the manner of its celebration. This is what makes them to adopt the principle of throwing away the baby with the bath water. The paper concluded that Mawlid has credence from the Qur'an, Sunnah and the practices of the Salaf. It recommended that the celebration should be adopted by all while all abuses should be holistically addressed by scholars.

An Appraisal of Sufi Themes in Al-Ubudiyyah of Ibn Taymiyyah
(Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Faculty of Arts, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, 2017-12-12) Yusuph Dauda Gambari
Ibn Taymiyyah is one of the scholars in Islam whose death did not affect the spread of their influence and legacies. He is a scholar to be reckoned with in every aspect of Islamic studies across all ages. He wrote quite a number of works in which Al-CUbūdiyyah which this paper focuses on is one of them. One of the aspects of Islamic discourses which usually generate rumbles among the Islamic scholar is taṣawwuf on which Ibn Taymiyyah wrote to enrich the discourse and make his position known. The aim of this writing therefore is to appraise the mystical discourse of Ibn Taymiyyah in Al-CUbudiyyah and to determine their level of similarities or otherwise with those of the Sufis. The paper adopted analytical method which availed opportunity to analyse various discussions in the work in comparison with those of the Sufis. This paper revealed that Ibn Taymiyyah did not out rightly reject or condemn Sufism but also endeavour to examine the doctrines and practices therein and came up with submissions that sometimes agree with the Sufis and go against some of them at another time. It is therefore concluded that contrary to the general anti-Sufi notion which has been spread across board about Ibn Taymiyyah on Sufism, he expressed pair views (condemnation and commendation). The paper therefore recommended a further research on the other works of Ibn Taymiyyah vis-a-vis Sufism in other to have an over-view of his submissions on taṣawwuf as contained in all his works.

An Appraisal of the Practice of Sufism and Jalabi among Yoruba Muslims in Nigeria
(Universitas Islam Bandung & Research Synergy Foundation, 2023) Oniye Olayinka Ibrahim; Yusuph Dauda Gambari
Jalabi and Sufism are two abiding practices among Yoruba Muslims. Both have been instrumental to the consolidation and propagation of Islam across the Yorubaland. Many early Yoruba Muslims, especially Islamic scholars, were Jalabi practitioners and Sufi adherents. Still, both have been condemned recently by Salafiyyah scholars, who considered innovations (bid'ah). They even regard the two practices as synonymous. Conversely, the practitioners disagree with them and claim the legitimacy of the two practices in Islam. This study examines the two phenomena to the veracity of the two claims. Historical and exegetical methods are adopted. The former enables the assessment of historical facts connected to Jalabi and Sufism in Yorubaland. Also, the latter allows the interpretation of relevant works, especially the primary sources of Islam, to determine the legitimacy of the two variables. Findings revealed that both have credence in Islam and that early Muslim scholars devised Jalabi as a darwah strategy to propagate Islam. It also revealed that both exist independently, though combined by some scholars. The work concluded that neither can be displaced in Islam and that Salafiyyah scholars address each according to its peculiarities.

An Assessement of the Activities of Selected Halqatus-Salafiyyah in Ilorin Metropolis
(Department of Religions, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, 2021-04-25) Yusuph Dauda Gambari
Ḥalqah(p. Ḥalaqāt) is a unique avenue for imparting knowledge in Islam. It has been explored over times to get Muslims educated about their religion. It was institutionalised by the Prophet himself in the early days of Islam. The existence of ḥalqah in recent times has been synonymous to Salafism through which many Muslims have inclined to it (Salafism). However, different issues have come up due to availability of ḥalqah in Ilorin, with both effects. This paper therefore examined the activities of ḥalaqātu’s-Salafiyyah in Ilorin, identified their major impacts and challenges. The historical method was adopted to drive home the objective of this paper. It is discovered that ḥalqah metamorphosed from Dacwah activities of the Salafiyyah scholars in Ilorin. It is also discovered that activities of ḥalqah in the city are not limited to traditional teaching of Islam, but also include organisation of seminars and conferences among others. The impacts of ḥalqah in the city extended beyond religious entrenchment, but also covered sociopolitical, economic and intellectual spheres. The ḥalqah session in the city is also faced with internal wrangling and external challenges with negative effects on Salafism as a whole, ditto to ḥalqah . The paper therefore concluded that ḥalaqātu’s-Salafiyyah has the potentials to properly institutionalise Salafism in Ilorin if the Salafiyyah advocates put their house in order.

AN ASSESSMENT OF FEMALE PARTICIPATION IN AD-DA'WATU’ S-SALAFIYYAH IN ILORIN
(Department of Religions, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, 2020-04-25) Yusuph Dauda Gambari
Da'wah is a unique and indispensable tool for Islamic propagation. The work of Da'wah enlists both genders, though the reality reveals that both of them are not at par in most cases, especially when it comes to open-Da'wah engagements. Males are more prominent than their female counterparts. This paper therefore examines Ad-Da'watu’s-Salafiyyah in Ilorin vis-a-vis the involvement of women in making Salafiyyah a household name in the city. The paper adopted historical method in achieving its set objectives. It is revealed, in the paper, that Salafism is increasingly growing in the city by the day, though with some deficiencies, especially in relation to availability of female Du'āt. Despite the activeness and sizeable numbers of women inclination to the call, much has not been done to religiously cater for their interest as regards gender issues and sensitivity in Islam. There are few female Du'āt which is not proportionate to their numbers, hence males are made to anchor programmes that are meant for females. Misinterpretation of feminine provisions in the Sharīcah, matrimonial issues and inadequate knowledge of Islam are some of the identified factors for the paucity of female Salafiyyah preachers. The paper, therefore, concluded that for the Da'wah to be worthwhile, there is the need to train more women for Da'wah activities and for gender consciousness.

An Examination of Salafiyyah Scholar’s Discourse on Kneeling and Bending as Manners of Greeting in Islam
(International Islamic University, Malaysia, 2023) Oniye Olayinka Ibrahim; Yusuph Dauda Gambari
Bending, bowing, and kneeling are popular greetings across various tribes and societies, especially in Nigeria. The admissibility or otherwise of these manners has attracted the attention of Salafiyyah scholars in Islam. Relying on different sources, both from the Qur'an and ahadith, the past and present scholars in the Salafiyyah bloc have declared these manners as forbidden in Islam, which may even constitute Shirk (associating partners with Allah). The objective of this paper is to examine various pieces of evidence that are relied upon by these scholars for making such declarations, having realized that the issues of kneeling or bending, among others, are not expressly declared as such in either of the two primary sources of Islamic legislation compared to other acts that constitute harām or Shirk. The exegetical and analytical methods of research were adopted in this paper. The two methods enable the assessment of relevant verses of the Qur'an and ahadith of the Prophet in the light of classical Mufassirūn's submissions on those verses and renditions of scholars like Al-Bani on most cited ahādīth on the issue of bending as a manner of greeting in Islam. After a critical examination, the finding revealed that most verses are grossly misconstrued; the most relied upon hadith is weak, while the supporting ones are unfounded. It is also discovered that there are a lot of misconceptions, misunderstandings, and overgeneralizations in the Salafiyyah scholars' submissions as regards the issues of bending and other manners of greeting. This paper, therefore, concluded that there is no substantive basis for a declaration of kneeling and bending while greeting as either harām or Shirk due to the absence of express provision from the Qur'an and hadith.

Extravagance as Contained in Tafsir Fi Zilal ‘l-Qur’an and its Relevance to Nigerian Society
(University of Uyo, Uyo, Nigeria., 2020-10) Oniye Olayinka Ibrahim; Yusuph Dauda Gambari
Extravagance (Israf) is one of heinous acts that the Muslims are warned to be wary of in the glorious Qur'an. The glorious book gives detail descriptions with specific examples of what extravagance is all about. Different scholars have expressed different views on it and have given different explanations for their audience to have a clear and better understanding of it. This paper discussed Israf as contained in Tafsir Fi Zilal 'l-Qur'an of Sayyid Qutb and related it to what is obtainable at both public and private lives in Nigeria. It is discovered from every indication that there exists a wide gap between the Islamic teachings on acquisition and disbursement of resources and what the Nigerians indulge in. Many factors that responsible for the variations are identified. It also included the implications and the consequences of indulging in extravagant life. The paper therefore concluded that efforts should be made by the people and the government of Nigeria to strengthen institutions that are put in place to fight corruption and other unethical practices in the society and to curb wastages.

M.O.A. Abdul (1926-1986): An Indispensible Persoanlity in the Field of Arabic and Islamic Studies in Nigeria
(National Association of the Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies (NATAIS), 2024-03-28) Yusuph Dauda Gambari
The twin fields of Arabic and Islamic Studies play a critical role in advancing the understanding and practice of Islam among Muslims. Informal learning of these subjects had taken place in Nigeria for centuries before their incorporation into the country's curriculum. Despite the daunting challenges, some indigenous individuals dedicated themselves to bringing these courses to a prestigious level, pioneering their study, and teaching them across schools in the country. However, these quintessential personalities still need due recognition through adequate dissemination of information about their lives and works. One of these pioneers was Professor Musa Oladipupo Ajilogba Abdul, Nigeria's first indigenous Professor of Islamic Studies, who taught and authored many works to simplify the teaching and understanding of Islam for Nigerians. The objective of this paper is to evaluate his activities and to shed light on his enduring legacy, mainly through his former students, mentees, and those scholars who pass through his former students. Using a historical method, the research gathered information through interviews and available library materials. The findings revealed that Prof. M.O.A. Abdul was an iconic academic with an everlasting legacy that is difficult to match. His former students are leading Islamic Studies scholars in Nigeria and beyond, exhibiting his teachings and principles. The paper concluded by recommending a revivalist approach to make Prof. M.O.A. Abdul more relevant in learning Islamic Studies in Nigeria by reproducing his works and domesticating his philosophy by his students and grand-students.

The Intricacies of Salafiyyah's Belief on Arsh (Throne) as Contained in the Qur'an
(Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Faculty of Arts, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, 2018-12-11) Yusuph Dauda Gambari
cArsh, in relation to Allah, is one of the issues that have been generating diverse views among scholars of different blocs in Islam. This is because it is mysterious in nature. The Salafiyyah enclave is one of the key actors whenever topics relating to the Being of Allah and His CArsh came up for discussion. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to examine the various submissions of the Salafiyyah scholars on cArsh to bring out the disparities therein and their implications. The exegetical method is adopted for proper and adequate assessment of related issues. The findings of this paper revealed that there is no common ground among the Salafiyyah when it comes to cArsh and the Being of Allah and that it constitutes part of Mutashābihāt (allegorical issues) that Q.3:7 directed the Muslims to keep off discussions on them. It also revealed that some Salafiyyah scholars are equally guilty of anthropomorphism which they have accused many scholars of other blocs of. The paper, therefore, concluded that Tafwīḍ ’l-Macnā wan-Nafyyu ’l-Kayf (abstinence from explanation and negation of likeness) is what the Salaf and majority of the scholars held on to and advocated, either in relation to cArsh or allegorical issues in Islam. It is therefore recommended that contemporary Muslims should limit themselves to what is stated in both the Qur’ān and authentic ḥadīth with regards to Mutashābihāt without explaining their modality or rejection of them. Keywords: Salafiyyah, cArsh, Tafwīḍ, Mutashābihāt, Modality
