Item Adjustment Strategies to Job Loss among Internally Displaced Persons in Abuja, Nigeria(Malaysian Association of Counselling (IPERKAMA), 2018-07) Adebayo, David O; Tajudin, Mohd N; Adebiyi, Damilola RInternal displacement is a growing menace in countries, particularly, sub-Sahara Africa. Affected persons are made to flee their shelters due to occurrences like armed conflicts, natural disasters or war. This study examined adjustment strategies to job losses among internally displaced persons in Abuja, Nigeria. A total of four hundred IDPs in Yimitu village, Waru District participated in the study. A self-designed questionnaire entitled “Adjustment Strategies of Internally Displaced Persons Questionnaire” was used for data collection. Four research questions and four null hypotheses were raised and tested respectively at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive statistics, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were employed for data analysis. Findings revealed that common adjustment strategies adopted by internally displaced persons included trading, accessing low interest loans either from banks or NGOs, group/collective ownership of business activities, acquisition of skills, as well as furthering of one’s education. There was significant difference in adjustment strategies between male and female IDPs. Recommendations include involving rehabilitation and career counsellors in the various programmes designed for assisting IDPs.Item Influence of Assertiveness Training in Preventing Sexual Harassment in Nigerian Universities as Perceived by Counsellors in Kwara State(Institute of Medico-Legal Publications Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi, India, 2019-02-21) Adebayo, David O; Tajudin, Mohd NSexual harassment is gaining momentum in Nigerian universities in recent times than decades ago. This study therefore examined the influence of assertiveness training in preventing sexual harassment in Nigerian universities as perceived by counsellors in Kwara State. The study adopted survey method. A total of 500 counsellors were randomly selected as samples. Self-designed questionnaire was used for data collection. It had a reliability coefficient of 0.82 using a test-retest method. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were used to answer the research questions raised and to test the four null hypotheses. Results revealed that counsellors supported the introduction of assertiveness training for preventing sexual harassments in universities. There was significant difference based on counsellors’ level of education, religions and gender, but none for knowledge of assertiveness skills. This issue can be addressed through self-monitoring. This study examined the influence of self-monitoring in preventing bullying behaviours among in-school adolescents with samples drawn from 10 purposively selected secondary schools. Three research questions were raised while four hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. Survey was employed for the field work. A total of 200 secondary school students participated in the study. Researcher-designed questionnaire entitled “Influence of Self-Monitoring on Bullying Behaviour Inventory (ISBBI) was used to elicit information from respondents. Mean, t-test and analysis of variance were used to analysis the data. Respondents appreciated the effectiveness of self-monitoring in preventing bullying behavior. Results also indicated that respondents appreciated self-monitoring exercise as a veritable strategy for reducing incidence of bullying behaviours. Recommendation include integration of behaviour modification technique with particular emphasis on the principles of self-monitoring as this could reduce incidence of bullying.Item Relationship between Demographic Factors and Undergraduates’ Cyberbullying Experiences in Public Universities in Malaysia(Faculty of Education, Eskisehir Osmangazi University, Istanbul, Turkey., 2020-01-01) Adebayo, David O; Tajudin, Mohd N; Bolu-Steve, Foluke NIn modern times, social media platforms have become veritable tools of communication and interaction amongst young adults in the university environment as well as the larger society. As important as it is, the platform has continued to cause serious psychological and emotional trauma to users through cyberbullying activities. This study examined the relationship between demographic factors and undergraduates’ cyberbullying experiences in public universities in Malaysia. It was a quantitative study which adopted survey design. Self-designed questionnaire entitled Demographic factors and undergraduates’ cyberbullying experiences was used for data collection. The instrument yielded coefficient of .92 using the Cronbach’s alpha reliability. A total of 400 undergraduates were purposively selected at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. One research question was raised and three hypotheses were tested. Data collected were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling Partial Least Squares 3 (SEM-PLS3. The findings revealed that there was significant relationship between the demographic factors: gender and programme of study but no significance for race. Hence, gender and programme of study significantly predict cyberbullying experiences of undergraduates than racial affiliations. It was recommended that effective counselling be introduced in order to assist victims of cyber assaults overcome the trauma suffered, and also stem the wave of cyberbullying among undergraduates.Item Relationship Between Social Media Use and Students’ Cyberbullying Behaviors in a West Malaysian Pubic University(Journal of Education, Boston University, United States of American; SAGE Publications, 2021-01) Adebayo, David O; Tajudin, Mohd NSocial media is widely used by university students in modern times, although, serious psychological damage is caused to users through cyberbullying activities. This study examined the relationship between social media use and students’ cyberbullying behaviors in a west Malaysian public university. Correlational survey was adopted, while 400 undergraduates purposively selected from three faculties participated in the study. Questionnaire entitled “Engagement on Social Media Use (ESMU)” was used for data collection. Two hypotheses were tested using SEM-PLS3. Results indicated that social media use and gender significantly related to cyberbullying behaviors. Counseling is recommended to assist in stemming cyberbullying behaviors among undergraduates.Item The Solutions to workplace sexual harassment as expressed by the labour force in Lagos, Nigeria(ASEAN Psychology and Counselling Conference, 2018-09-26) Adebayo, David O; Tajudin, Mohd N; Ajiboye, Samuel KSexual harassment is one of the major challenges faced by the labour-force in the contemporary Nigerian society. Victims of workplace sexual harassment often come under severe pressure exerted by their superiors in the form of threats to terminate appointments of the victims. This study therefore investigated solutions to workplace sexual harassment as expressed by the labour-force in Lagos, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted with a total of 515 respondents purposively selected across public and private sectors. A questionnaire entitled “Solutions to Workplace Sexual Harassment” was employed to collect data for the study. The instrument possessed a reliability coefficient of 0.81 having been subjected to the Cronbach’s alpha method. Mean and t-test statistical tools were used to analyse the data. All hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. Results revealed that strict punitive measures, increased worker assertiveness, early reporting of attempts, dressing modestly to the workplace are workable solutions to the menace of sexual harassment in the workplace. The study recommended that workers should be more official in the workplace in terms of dressing, conduct while labour laws and policies be strengthened towards ensuring the protection of workers, and teaching more assertive skills in the workplace.
