Item Educational Games: An Indispensable Tools for Learning(Osun State University, NIgeria, 2016) Soetan, A.K.Different strategies have been developed to achieve quality education at different stages of learning. Educational games involve deployment of appropriate human and non-human resources in order to acheive learning objectives which serve as instructional materials that are used to stimulate learning in a conducive academic environment. These could be in form of models, visuals or games that can help spice up learning through play. Games are designed to suit specific learning purposes, help develop skills and serve as impetus to learning. This paper discussed the necessity of games in instruction, types, videp games as learning tools, guides on how to use games and significance of games in learning among others. It is therefore imperative that games should be encouraged to enhance learning under teachers' or parents' guidanceItem Effects of Computer Assisted Instructional Packages on the Performance of Senior Secondary School Visual Art Students(Department of Educational Technology, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2016) Soetan, A.K.; Odewumi, M.O.The application of technological tools such as computers in education has significantly been enhancing teaching of Visual Arts which people believe are not lucrative and are lazy man’s work. This study examined the effects of Ceramics computer assisted instructional package (CCAIP) on Senior Secondary School Students' performance in Visual Art (ceramics) in Ogbomoso, Nigeria. Samples comprised 50 students from two purposively selected secondary schools in Ogbomosho Nigeria. The research instruments were structured questionnaire Visual Art Performance Test (VIAPET) and developed Ceramic Computer Assisted Instructional Package (CCAIP) developed using the five stages of ADDIE model. The experimental group was exposed to CCAIP, while the control group was exposed to VIAPET Three research questions were raised and answered and three corresponding hypotheses were generated and tested, hypothesis one and two were tested with t-test while hypothesis three was tested using Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results indicated that t (48) = 2.68 with p = 0.91, t (48) = 5.96 with p = 0.63 and F (1, 47) = 5.432 with p = 0.823, which implied that no significant difference occurred between the performance of students taught with CCAIP and those taught with VIAPET. Even though no significance difference existed, the study however recommends that CCAIP should be developed for teaching difficult Arts concept since it can create much excitement in students.Item Gender Inequalities and Access to Education in NIgeria: A Panacea for National Development(Department of Educational Management, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2013) Ahmed, M.A; Ogunlade, O.O.; Soetan, A.K.This paper focuses on gender inequalities and access to education, A 3 - section, 10 item questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents comprising of literate and illiterate individuals in the society. Section A comprises of respondents bio - data, section B contains 10 items and C provides space for the respondents's opinion that may not have been listed in section B. The responses were collated and the common opinion are as summarised below: 1. Girl children will finally find themselves in their husbands' houses so there is no need placing them on a strong footing education. 2. Girl children are not always interested in science and technological based courses which are now the order of the day. 3. Girl children have phobia for scientific enquiry and discovery. It is therefore suggested that girl - children have to be encouraged to take up challenges with their male counterparts in order to be relevant to the contemporary society. Illiterate parents should be educated and literates be encouraged to allow their girl - children good access to education. Government should provide free and compulsory education for girls up to university levelItem Gender Influence on Undergraduates' Information Literacy Skills in the Use of Internet Resources for Learning in Kwara State, Nigeria.(Faculty of Education, University of Malaya, Malaysia, 2018) Soetan, A.K.; Ominuta, M.I.Information literacy skills are the ability that enables learners to successfully surf the internet in search of information to improve learning. The internet is a platform that consists of different resources where learners can search for and retrieve information. However, undergraduates do not possess the skills to surf the internet, find and use needed information and filter out irrelevant ones. This study was a descriptive research of the survey type. The objectives were to: (1) Examine the information literary skills possessed by undergraduate students. (2) Determine gender influence on the information literacy skills of undergraduates in the use of internet resources in Kwara State, Nigeria. 294 undergraduates were purposefully selected based on school proprietorship (Federal, State and Private). Israel model (2013) was used to determine the sample size. Two research questions were raised and answered using mean, frequency counts and percentage while one hypothesis was generated and tested using t-test statistic. The findings of the study showed that: i.Undergraduates possessed task definition with grand mean of (3.54) located and assessed information with grand mean of (3.43) and synthesis skills with grand mean of (3.37). ii. there was a significant difference between male and female students’ information literacy skills on the use of internet resources for learning {t(292)=2.86,p<.05 in favour of the male. Female undergraduates should be encouraged to develop interest in surfing the internet for relevant learning resources.Item Improvisation of Instructional Materials for Teaching Science in Basic Schools in Ilorin South, Kwara State, Nigeria(2017) Soetan, A.K.; Olanrewaju, O.S.Improvisation is the use of an alternative when the real material or object is not available. Improvised materials are produced from materials like paper, stick, cans, straws and others found within the learners' environment. This paper aimed at sensitizing Basic School Teachers to the production of improvised 2-dimensional visual of internal excretory mammalian organ. These materials were processed to produce the model of a kidney which cannot be seen aided. Three research questions were raised and answered. Four Educational Technologists and Four Biology teachers were purposively selected and involved in the ratings of the model. It was rated as being cost effective compared to imported ones, the cost of production was #1,800.00. Simple percentage was used to analyze the responses from the evaluation form. Findings revealed that quality and suitability were rated 77% and 75% respectively by Educational Technologists, while Biology teachers rated the quality 80% and suitability 78%. It infers that the model is of good quality and suitable to teach Upper Basic students. It is therefore recommended among others, that teachers’ trainees should be encouraged in the production and use of improvised materials. Teachers should be sponsored to attend Workshops and Seminars on improvisation to enhance more enlightenment. Educational technologists should be employed in schools to teach and guide other teachers on how to convert waste materials to improvised teaching and learning resources. They should also be involved in objective rating of whatever material that is being improvised before utilization.Item Rethinking Nigeria's Teacher Training Programme In Information and Communication Technology for The Child In AChanging World(LEAGO ENTERPRISES Ltd, Liverpool, England, United Kingdom in conjunction with Department of Educational Foundations, University of Jos, Nigeria., 2018) Suleiman, Z.; Soetan, A.K.A key trend to the changing world is the child’s changing needs and exponential growth in exchanging information and knowledge. Teacher training is expected to reflect on these changes through adoption of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education. This paper explored how Nigeria’s teacher training programme can be re-strategized through adopting ICT in education to meet up with the dynamic needs of the Nigerian child. Related literature was reviewed on the role of ICT in education, rationale for rethinking teacher training in the changing world, and policy framework on teacher training in Nigeria. Most prospective and practicing teachers are yet to acquire both professional and ICT skills that will enable them to effectively teach the Nigerian child. The reason being that the traditional approach to instruction is predominantly in use. The paper identified strategies for teacher training through ICT Competency Framework for Teachers. Conclusion was made and suggestions were offered as a way forward that teacher training should be a continuous process to produce teachers, who are not only professionally trained but teachers, who are adaptable to the changing world, and that the planning and development of teacher education curriculum should take into cognizance the global strategies on teacher training in a digital world, while regulatory bodies of teacher training institutions should provide performance indicators for the framework of action.
