    ANALYSIS OF INDIGENOUS USES AND AVAILABLE PROCESSING TECHNOLOGIES OF PEARL-MILLET AMONG RURAL WOMEN IN JIGAWA STATE, NIGERIA

    The study examined the indigenous uses and available processing technologies on pearl-millet among women in Jigawa State, Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was used to select one hundred and sixty women millet processors for the study. Majority were married (73.1%), Muslims (94.3%) and with no formal education (60.0%). About 96.9% were within the age range of 21-50 years (M=40 years), mean household size and monthly income are 9 persons and N7, 069.18k respectively. About 98.0% sourced labor for millet processing from the family. Funds for business were mostly through borrowing from members of family/relatives (48.8%) and cooperative movement (38.8%). Secondary occupations is either trading (49.4%) or farming (46.9%). Larger percentage (95.0%) of the respondents belongs to one social group or the other. Most available millet processing technologies are soaking/cooking and traditional/bioprocessing (98.1%) while about 41.0% used the thermal improved processing technique. Most uses were; production of Fura, Tuwo, Kunu (98.1%) and closely followed by Ogi, Koko or Akamu (96.9%) among others. Major constraints were; inadequate capital and storage facilities (97.5%). This was followed by nomadic Fulani invasion of farm, lack of improved processing skills, insect pest infestation, processing equipment and extension contact (93.8%).Advocacy (75.6%) on uses of millet is another. Main source of awareness is family/friends/neighbors (88.1%). The study recommended that government should strengthen the extension service delivery by employing more personnel with adequate training to reduce the gap of processors and extension agent contact. Improved variety with good processing value compactable with the socio-cultural background of the respondents should be introduced with current technologies on its processing.

    Assessment of Agricultural Information Needs and Accessibility Methods Used by Smallholder farmers in Ilorin-west Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria

    This study assessed agricultural information needs and accessibility methods used by smallholder farmers in obtaining agricultural information in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State. Structured interview schedule was used to elicit information from a total of one hundred and ten (110) respondents selected through a multistage sampling procedure. The results showed majority of the respondents (73.6% and 72.7%) indicated the need for information on 'fertilizer usage to increase their productivity' and 'improved seeds and seedlings' respectively. Also, 77.3% needed information on crop variety to grow at a given season to ensure marketability of such crop. Radio was most prominently used means of obtaining agricultural information (2.0). Extension agents, with a mean score of 1.67, was fifth most common used source for obtaining agricultural information. Prominent among the constraints to agricultural information accessibility were inability to understand technical language 2 used during information accessibility (2.0) and language barrier (1.79). Also, gender (χ = 4.56) and 2 age category (χ = 5.32) had significant association with information accessibility method (at p < 0.05). The need to enhance extension agents' performance in reaching smallholder farmers with requisite and timely agricultural information on various areas of agriculture particularly in their local languages is recommended.

    Developing Activity-Based Young Farmers' Club Projects for Incorporating into the Senior School Curriculum in Nigeria

    The purpose of the study was to develop activity-based contents of young farmers' club activities for inclusion in the Agricultural Science Curriculum for Senior School (SS) 1-3. The first two components of Stufflebeam's Context-Input-Process-Product(CIPP) curriculum development models were adopted. The sample and sampling techniques of content developed employed all the projects of the Young Farmers' Club peculiar to Agricultural Science .The research work focused on four Nigerian SS Agricultural Science Curriculum themes of crop production, ornament plants, animal science and agricultural economics and extension. If the contents are adequately implemented by SS agricultural science teachers, the performance of students could improve and the goals of teaching agricultural science to students could be attained by preparing students to be self-efficacy employed, thus reducing over - dependence on white collar jobs.It was recommended that the curriculum developers should adopt/ adapt the contents developed and include them in the agricultural science curriculum for senior secondary school (SS) 1-3.Textbook authors should also incorporate the newly developed contents in the revised edition of the various agricultural science textbooks for SS1-3.

    Exploring the Usefulness of Mathematics as Tool for Development of Agricultural Practices in Nigeria

    World all over, agriculture is regarded as one of the key parameters for determining development particularly in the areas of food provision. This in turn could guarantee security of life and property. Incidentally, the Nigeria nation, upon discovery of crude oil has over time underplay the need to place high premium on effective engagement of its citizenry in agricultural practices as it is in other countries of the world. The attendant effects of economic recession has therefore brought back the need to think outside the door and return back to basics by giving agricultural sectors it deserving place as part of strategic plan to end hunger and poverty being witness across the land. In doing so, it is imperative to consider the advances in Science and Technology, specifically integrating the application of mathematics and for efficiencyand desired productivity. Thus, this paper is written to x-ray the roles and applications of Mathematics in teaching and learning of agriculture; research and development in Agriculture as well as production practices in Agriculture. The paper first review the concept of agriculture and Mathematics as well as their relevance to the society. The link between agriculture and mathematics was briefly discussed. Then, the specific use of agriculture in each of the areas were discussed. Finally recommendations were made to strengthen the appreciation of mathematics as vital component of agriculture.

    Historical Development of Agricultural Teacher Education in Nigeria

    The main purpose of this paper is to provide historical background on agricultural teacher education in Nigeria and in an attempt to do that attention was paid to clarifying the concept of agricultural education. It further gives a brief explanation on teacher education, its philosophy and agricultural teacher education in Nigeria. It also provides detail historical antecedent of agricultural teacher education from the era of colonization when the Christian missionaries arrived in Nigeria with western education. It recognizes the key role of Ashby Commission recommendations in the establishment of advanced colleges of education and the commencement of the first ever B.Sc.(Ed) degree programme in Agricultural teacher education by University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1962 with the assistance from Ford Foundation. Inadequate manpower, insufficient teaching and learning resources, lack of viable professional bodies and meetings, poor admission policy of some universities, inadequate training programme and poor funding of agricultural teacher education are some of the challenges identified facing agricultural teacher education in Nigeria. It is recommended among others that there is need for adequate funding through innovative means, training and re-training of agricultural educators.

    Perceived Benefits of Neem Trees (Azadirachta Indica) among Youth Farmers in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria

    Desertification in the Northern part of Nigeria has claimed hundreds of hectares of farmland has been successfully combated in recent years by planting of Neem trees. The study therefore assessed the youths' perceived benefits of Neem trees in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria.Three stage sampling technique was used to collect data from 120 youth Neem farmers and analyzed using frequency counts, percentages ,means ,standard deviation and Charts. The study revealed that majority(74.2%) of the respondents were married, 95.8 % Muslims,with mean age of 30 years, farm size of 4 hectares ,12 years farming experience, monthly income of # 21,904.18 and 23.4 % having formal education. The major source of awareness of Neem tree was through family, friends and neighbours (91.7 %). Major Perceived benefits of Neem tree were firewood and charcoal making (99.2%),making cow haulage transport system (98.3%), cover and shade tree (94.2%), erosion control and burial tool (92.5%). Respondents' indigenous knowledge of Neem tree uses include skin diseases and gastrointestinal infections in ruminants (57.5%), for grains and cowpea storage (92.5%). Constraints on Neem use were lack of subject matter specialists(100%), poor extension contact (97.5%), dosage knowledge (85.8%). In conclusion, Neem tree was however perceived with a wide range of usefulness among the respondents. It is therefore, recommended that extension service delivery in utilization of Neem tree in the state.

    Secondary School Agricultural Science teachers’ Perceptions of Social Media use in teaching in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria

    This study examined secondary school teachers’ perceptions of social media use in teaching agricultural science in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria. Four research questions were raised and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A descriptive research of the survey method was adopted for the study. A total of 84 respondents formed the sample size for the study. Researchers’ designed questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the research questions while t-test and ANOVA were used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05level of significance. The findings revealed that WhatsApp and Facebook were the most preferred social media to be used by the teachers for teaching agricultural science and that teachers rarely used them for teaching. The findings of the study also revealed that teachers had negative perceptions on the use of social media for teaching and also perceived some challenges in the use of social media for teaching which include: students not having money to subscribe data for social media, lack of android phone to access social media platforms, among others. The result of the hypotheses also revealed that there was no significant difference between teachers’ gender and qualification on their perceptions of social media use in teaching agricultural science. It was recommended among others that Schools and Ministry of Education and other parastatals should organize workshops and seminars on the use of social media and ICTs in teaching to ameliorate the negative perceptions of social media use for teaching agricultural science.

    Unlocking Youths Management Competence in Rearing of Rabbits for Self- reliance in Nsukka Senatorial Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria

    2. Unemployment among the able youths has been recognized among social menace in Nigeria with Enugu State inclusive and rabbit production has been identified as a viable weapon to address this problem. This study, therefore identified management competence required by youths in rabbits rearing for self -reliance in Nsukka Senatorial Zone of Enugu State. Three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The population for the study was 297. The sample size for the study was 103 selected through purposive sampling procedure. A 30 item questionnaire titled: ‘Youth Management Competence for Rabbit Rearing Questionnaire’ (YMCRRQ) was used for data collection. The instrument was face validated by three experts. Cronbach Alpha Method was used to determine the internal consistency of the questionnaire items which yielded a coefficient of 0.79. Mean was used to analyze the data and t-test statistics was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. It was found out that the youths required all the management competencies in feeding, management and housing of rabbits. It was recommended that all the managerial competencies be used to train youths as a package for sustainable self –reliance in Nsukka Senatorial Zone of Enugu State.
