Item Attitude of Military and Paramilitary Officers towards the Role of Arabic Language in Addressing Security Issues in Nigeria(International Islamic University, Malaysia, 2018-04-07) Abdullahi, Musa Siddiq; SALISU, MusaThis study is a descriptive research that addresses the role of Arabic in handling security issues in Nigeria and the attitude of security officers towards this role. Arabic plays a significant role in addressing security challenges because it has the ability to solve problems between groups of people by ensuring an atmosphere of understanding and peaceful co-existence. The study's population consisted of all Nigerian military and paramilitary officers. Using stratified random sampling, 50 officers were selected from the Nigerian army, air force, police, and civil defense corporations in the North-east totaling 200 respondents altogether. One research question and one hypothesis guided the study. An “Arabic Language Education and National Security Questionnaire” questionnaire, with a reliability of 0.76, was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics in the forms of frequencies and percentages were used to answer the research question, while one-way ANOVA was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 significance level. The findings reveal a significant difference in the perceptions of Nigerian military and paramilitary officers regarding the role of Arabic in tackling security issues. It was recommended, among others that, the government recognize Arabic as a language equal in rank to English in Nigeria and utilize it as a medium of communication and instruction. The study suggests that Arabic be incorporated into the in-house training for military and paramilitary officers in charge of Nigerian national security.Item PRONUNCIATION DIFFICULTIES IN ARABIC SYLLABLE PATTERNS AMONG UPPER BASIC HAUSA-SPEAKING STUDENTS IN KANO STATE, NIGERIA(Alhikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2017-07-05) SALISU, Musa; Abdullahi, Musa SiddiqThe relevance of Arabic language and its study in the world generally, and particularly in Nigeria, cannot be overemphasised. However, in the process of learning this language, there are always some indispensable learning difficulties, especially in the pronunciation aspect. Therefore, this study investigated the pronunciation difficulties in syllable patterns among Upper Basic Hausa-speaking students in Kano State, Nigeria. The data for the study were obtained from the 3 senatorial districts of the State, involving 9 Local Government Areas, through a researcher- designed pronunciation test. 180 Upper Basic Hausa-speaking students of Arabic were selected from 3 private and 9 public basic schools, using stratified and purposive sampling techniques respectively. The variables of interest were gender and school type. Frequency, percentage and chi-square were employed to analyse the data collected. Findings of the study revealed that students’ pronunciation difficulties cut across gender and school type as there was no significant difference in the syllable patterns that constituted pronunciation difficulties for male and female Upper Basic Hausa-speaking students in public and private basic schools in Kano State. It was concluded that, three of the six identified Arabic syllable patterns exist in Hausa and therefore do not constitute pronunciation difficulty for Hausa-speaking students. It was therefore, recommended that stakeholders, including curriculum developers, syllabus designers and textbook writers should take cognizance of the students’ pronunciation difficulties when producing their respective Arabic education-related instructional materials.
