    Causes of incomplete immunization among under-one year old in Ilorin south local government area, Kwara state, Nigeria

    Abstract Incomplete immunization has led to increase in the number of infections which children suffer from and which could have been prevented if completed. This study investigated the causes of incomplete immunization among under-one year olds in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State. A descriptive research design of survey type was adopted. The population of the study comprises of all the nursing mothers resided in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State. A sample of 220 nursing mothers selected from routine immunization centers were the respondents for the study. Multi-stage sampling techniques of purposive, stratified and simple random sampling were used to select the respondents. Researchers’ designed questionnaire validated by 3 experts in the area of study was used for the study. A test re-test method was used to ascertain the reliability of the instrument, a correlation coefficient of 0.70r was obtained. Four trained research assistants helped in data collection while chi-square statistics was used to test the hypotheses set for the study at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The findings showed that: 1. poor access to immunization centers had no significant influence on incomplete immunization of under-one year olds (12.45 < 16.92); 2. non availability of material resources had no significant influence on incomplete immunization of under-one year olds (13.55 < 16.92); and 3. poor utilization of immunization services had no significant influence on incomplete immunization of under-one year olds (18.14 > 16.92). It was concluded that poor access of mothers to immunization centers was not the causes of incomplete immunization among under one year old in the study area, non availability of material resources at the immunization centers was not the causes of incomplete immunization among under one year old and poor utilization of immunization services by mothers was the causes of incomplete immunization of under-one year old in the area. It was recommended among others that the health workers should create good rapport with the mothers and educate them on side effects of immunization in order to sustain their interest in completing their children immunization.

    Contributions of Sports to Health and Overall Development of an individual

    Abstract This study reviewed some of the contributions of sport to health and development. Physical inactivity is an undersirable lifestyle and it is a threat to good, healthy living. Health and quality of life can be maintained and improved upon by regular physical acrtivity. Regular participation by appropriate physical activities and sports by both sexes and all ages serves as a medium through which competition; friendship, tolerance, unity, discipline, endurance and diplomacy are promoted. Sport can serve as an educational platform, a mobilization process, a way to strengthen individuals, communities and a source of joy, inspiration and hope. The authors recommend amongst others that, government should organize enlightenment campaign through mass media in order to educate people on benefits inherent in sport participation; every individual should partake in sport activity so as to prevent peoples’ exposure to hypokinetic diseases which are dangerous to health.     Impacts of physical exercise on mental wellbeing of local government employees in Oyo Town, Nigeria

    The study examined impact of physical exercise on mental well being of local government employees in Oyo town, Oyo state, Nigeria. The population of study comprised of all employees in the existing three local government in Oyo metropolis on unified grade level 07 and above. Multi stage sampling technique was used to select one hundred and twenty (120) respondents used for the study. The instrument used for data collected for the study was researcher structured questionnaire which was validated and tested with the use of test-retest method. A reliability coefficient of correlation of 0.79r was obtained. In all three (3) research hypotheses were drawn and tested with the use of chi-square (x²) statistical method at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The finding of the study reveals that participation of local government employees in physical fitness exercises have much impact on their mental alertness. Also, participation of local government employees have impact on reduction of work stress. Based on the findings above, it is recommended that local government should endeavour to make provision for establishment of recreational centre within the local government for better fitness exercises.

    Implication of gender based violence on health and wellbeing of women in Ilorin South Local Government, Kwara State

    The paper examined implication of gender based violence on health and wellbeing of women in Ilorin South Local Government, Kwara State. A descriptive research design of survey method was adopted. Four hundred women were selected through stratified random sampling technique. Three research hypotheses were formulated and tested with the use of chi-square statistical method at 0.05 alpha level. The instrument used was structured questionnaire. A reliability coefficient of correlation of 0.78 was obtained with the use of test-re-test method. The data gathered were analyzed with the use of chi-square statistical method. The result of the analysis shows that gender based violence have much implications on physical wellbeing of women in Ilorin South local government, Kwara State. It was also revealed from the analysis that gender based violence have greater implications on mental wellbeing of women in Ilorin South Local Government, Kwara State. Based on these findings, the study recommend that government should make and strengthening enabling laws to stop gender based violence. Also, government and non-governmental organization should strengthening campaign against gender based violence.

    Implication of selected socio-cultural practices on reproductive health of women of childbearing age in rural areas of Oyo Town, Oyo State.

    This study examined the implication of some socio-cultural practices on the reproductive health of women of childbearing age in rural areas. Stratified random sampling was employed to select 368 respondents for the study; the instrument used was a self-structured and developed questionnaire, validated by experts in the field of community health, health education and reproductive health. The instrument was then pilot-tested twice with the use of split half method and a reliability coefficient.88r was obtained. Three research hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance and the data collected were analyzed by the use of chi-square statistics. The findings showed that early marriage and female genital mutilation have serious implications on reproductive health of respondents. It was therefore recommended that government and non-government organizations should embark on enlightenment campaigns and invest in reproductive health education for rural women.

    Influence of demographic factors on children immunization among Nupe people in Kwara state, Nigeria

    Abstract This study examined the influence of demographic factor of children Immunization among Nupe people in Kwara state. The research design of the survey method was used for the study. The population used for then study comprised all mothers residing in Edu and Patigi local government areas who have children between ages 0-1 year. Stratified sampling technique was used to pick 4 routine immunization centers from each district and twelve routine centres were selected from each local government. Simple random sampling procedure was used to select twenty five mothers from each of the routine immunization centres and three hundred participants were selected from each local government. Six hundred mothers therefore participated in the study. Content validity of the instruments was established by giving the drafts of the questionnaires to three experts in the related fields. The test re-test method was used to establish the reliability of the instrument, using Pearson product moment correlation, the co-efficient for reliability was 0.80r. Three research hypotheses were formulated for the study and tested at 0.05 alpha levels. Inferential statistics of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey honest significant post-hoc test were used to analyze the result of data collected from the respondents. The result showed that, demographic factors have influence on children immunization as a result of differences in mothers’ educational background, religious affiliation and occupation in the area. In view of this findings, the researchers recommended among others that, social mobilization committee (SMC) should carry out enlightment campaign on immunizations so as to enable mothers appreciate why immunization is important and benefit of doing away with ignorance, myths and rumors they have against immunization programme, traditional rulers and religious leaders should be involved in planning and executing of health education programme so as to improve the knowledge and attitudes of mothers towards immunization of children.

    Parents’ and Teachers’ Perceptions of the Teaching of Sexuality Education in Asa Local Government Area, Kwara State

    This study examined parents’ and teachers’ perceptions of the teaching of Sexuality Education in Asa Local Government Area. A descriptive survey method was adopted for the study. A sample of 300 respondents was involved in the study. A structured questionnaire (r = 0.82) was used to elicit data from the respondents. Three hypotheses were formulated and used for the study. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significant. Data collected were analyzed using t-test statistics. The result of the study showed that male and female respondents were significantly different in their perception of the teaching of Sexuality Education in secondary schools. The results also revealed that, the two religions (Christianity and Islam) strongly supported the teaching of Sexuality Education at secondary school level. The study recommended that teaching Sexuality Education in secondary school will reduce the risk of potential negative outcome from sexual behaviour like unwanted or unplanned pregnancies and Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

    Percieved factors responsible for malnutrition among under 5 children in Ogbomoso South local government area, Oyo State

    Abstract The study examined perceived factors responsible for malnutrition among under 5 children in Ogbomoso South Local Government Area, Oyo State. The population used for the study comprised all nursing mothers in Ogbomoso South Local Government. The descriptive research design of the survey method was used for this study. Multi-stage sampling techniques, consisting of simple, proportionate and systematic random sampling techniques were used to select 220 nursing mothers (respondents) in Ogbomoso South Local Government. Researcher-designed questionnaire validated by 3 experts drawn from the Department of Health Promotion and Environmental Health Education, University of Ilorin, Nigeria was used for data collection. A reliability coefficent of .84r was obtained through split-half method using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). Data collection was conducted by the researcher and three trained research assistants. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentage for demographic information as well as inferential statistics of Chi-square (X2) to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The findings of the study showed that: 1. Poor breastfeeding was perceived as a significant factor responsible for malnutrition among under 5 children because calculated X2 value (56.8) > critical value (5.99); 2. Poor diet was perceived as a significant factor responsible for malnutrition among under 5 children because calculated X2 value (30.6) > critical value (5.99); and 3. Poverty was perceived as a significant factor responsible for malnutrition among under 5 children because calculated X2 value (118.6) > critical value (5.99). The study concluded that poor breastfeeding, poor diet and poverty were perceived as significant factors responsible for malnutrition among under 5 children in Ogbomoso South Local Government. The findings implied that non-exclusive breastfeeding, inadequate diet and low income level of parents could result to malnutrition. It was recommended that nursing mothers should strictly adhere to exclusive breastfeeding and parents should make provision for adequate diet as these would prevent malnutrition.

    Social Cultural Factors Influencing Women’s Participation in Sports as Perceived by Female Students of the University of Ilorin.

    This study investigated the socio-cultural factors influencing women’s participation in sports as perceived by female undergraduates in the University of Ilorin. Two hundred female undergraduate students residing in school halls of residence were involved in the study. These were selected using simple random sampling. A twenty-two item questionnaire based on socio-cultural factors influencing female participation in sports was administered to the respondents. The findings were that culture, family background, religion, peer grouping and gender influence females’ participation in sports. In view of this, it was recommended that government should encourage participation in sports by providing scholarship and other incentives to female athletes who excel in any sports competition while mass media should organize enlightenment programmes that will mitigate the socio-cultural factors hindering women’s involvement in sports.
