    ASSESSMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE TEACHER TRAINEES’ AWARENESS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

    The paper assessed the undergraduate teacher trainees’ awareness of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study mainly examined the awareness of undergraduate teacher trainees on perception, objectives, conceptual and operational framework of SDGs. The population of the study comprised University of Ilorin undergraduate teacher trainees. Descriptive survey design was employed in the study and a questionnaire titled “Undergraduate teacher trainees’ Awareness of Sustainable Development Goals (UASDGs)” was administered to five hundred (500) students but only 467 were returned and were used. Three research questions were raised and answered using percentage. Two null hypotheses were tested using t-test statistic at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study showed that majority of undergraduate teacher trainees were not aware of the relationship between MDGs and SDGs identified in this study, they were only aware of MDGs which were developed for actualization in 15 years and they were aware of SDGs’ objectives. Findings also showed that majority of the undergraduate teacher trainees were not aware of the conceptual and operational platform of SDGs. The findings revealed that a significant difference exists between male and female, and Arts and Social Sciences Education undergraduate teacher trainees’ awareness of SDGs. Based on the findings, it was recommended that SDGs should be introduced to the curriculum content of the university education and citizenship education and Strategies and techniques should be involved in the awareness of the undergraduate teacher trainees to enable them work towards actualization of the goals.

    Attitude and preference of junior secondary school students to Civic Education in Ilorin Metropolis

    The study examined attitude and preference of junior and senior secondary school students to Civic Education in Ilorin Metropolis. The study adopted descriptive study. The study was carried out in ten purposely selected secondary schools in Ilorin, Kwara State. 200 Secondary Students both male and female with age differences were randomly selected as samples for investigation. Data for the study were collected through a questionnaire designed by the researcher to obtain information based on the categorization of students’ attitude and preference. The data for the study were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test Statistics. The null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that majority of the respondents’ attitude to Civic Education among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis were positive. Findings of the study also revealed that majority of the respondents’ have high preference for Civic Education among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. Finding revealed that there was a significant difference in the attitude to and preference for Civic Education among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. Findings revealed that there was no significant difference in the attitude of male and female to Civic Education among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. Findings also reviewed that there was no significant difference in the preference for Civic Education among secondary school male and female students in Ilorin metropolis. Recommendations made include: Civic Education should be integrated into the Nigerian teacher education programme and in-service training on civic and political matters should be done through regular seminars and workshops based on the findings of the study.

    EFFECT OF COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTIONAL PACKAGE ON UPPER BASIC STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA

    Computer Assisted Instructional Package is an innovative and interactive instructional technique of using computers in carrying out teaching and learning activities in the classroom situations. This study examined the effect of Computer Assisted Instructional Package on Upper Basic Social Studies students’ performance in Kwara State, Nigeria. Quasi-experimental study involving 2x2x2 non-randomized and non-equivalent pretest-posttest control groups research design was adopted. A simple random sampling technique was used to select two intact classes, one was an experimental group, the other was a control group. The instruments used were Computer Assisted Instructional Package and Social Studies Performance Tests. Their reliability coefficients were 0.78 and 0.76 respectively. The findings of the study revealed that the mean performance of upper basic students exposed to the package was high. There was a significant effect of the package on upper basic students’ performance in Social Studies (F=18.920, P>0.000); there was no significant interaction effect of gender, school mode and the package on upper basic students’ performance in Social Studies. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Computer Assisted Instructional Package should be used in teaching Social Studies to enhance students’ performance in schools and that the gender friendliness of Social Studies should be sustained.
