Item Parental Opinions on the Effects of Street Hawking on the Development of the Youths in Ilorin Metropolis(Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, 2017-11) Okafor, Ifeoma P.; Balogun, Abdulrasaq O; Abdullaziz, Isiaka; Iyekolo, A. Olushola; Oniye, Ridwan K.The Study was structured as a survey to investigate what parents in Ilorin Metropolis percieved as causes and consequences of street hawking on development of youthful human resources in Nigeria. From the population of parents across 5 randomly selected streets in the metropolis, a total of 300 parents were sampled using cluster sampling technique. The sampled parents were further stratified on the basis of educational status (educated and illiterate) and family type (polygamous and monogamous). The researcher used questionnaire called Causes and consequences of street hawking to collect the data. The instrument was validated. Percentage was used to answer the research Questions 1 and 2 while t-test statistic was used to test the raised hypothesis. Findings revealed that 78% of respondents blamed street hawking on parental poverty.Item Parents and Teachers Percieved Factors Hindering Students Enrolment in Basic Education in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State(Defunct Department of Educational Foundations, University of Ilorin., 2014-03) ABDULAZIZ, Isiaka; Saba, Mamman D.; Iyekolo, A. Olushola; Okafor, Ifeoma P.Abstract This paper examines parents and teachers perceived factors hindering student enrolment in Basic Education in Ilorin metropolis. The study adopted survey method of research to find out the parents’ and teachers’ perceived factors that hindered pupils’ enrolment in basic education. Cluster sampling technique was used to sample 400 respondents consisting of 200 teachers and 200 educated parents. Also, purposive sampling technique was used to sample 200 illiterate parents; this made the total number of respondents for the study to be 600. A researcher made questionnaire titled Enrolment in Universal Basic Education (UBE) was used to elicit the needed data from the respondents. The data were analyzed using percentages and chi-square to answer the raised research questions. However, significant difference exist in the way teachers and educated parents on one hand and educated parents and illiterate parents on the other hand perceived the influence of this factor of inadequate sensitization on pupils’ enrolment in basic education. It was concluded that adequate sensitization of the public on UBE should be embarked upon for the success of the program. Thus it was recommended among other things that government should intensify its efforts towards getting Nigerians informed about UBE programs and the benefits acquirable from enrolling their children in schools; discourage early marriages among others.Item ROLES OF TRADITIONAL RULERS IN CONFLICT RESOLUTION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA(Social Studies Association of Nigeria, 2020-04) Abdulsalam, Alliyu Ayodele; Olokooba, Issa Nasiru; Okafor, Ifeoma P.; Adika, Adedoyin ChristianaThis research examined the roles of traditional rulers in conflict resolution in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study population consisted of traditional rulers in the state. The study adopted a descriptive survey type, 180 members of traditional rulers were sampled through simple random sampling technique. The researchers’ designed questionnaire titled Roles of Traditional Rulers in Conflict Resolution Questionnaire was used as an instrument to elicit data from the respondents. The findings of the study showed that traditional rulers had many roles they play in conflict resolution in all ramifications. The study also revealed that there was no significant difference in the roles of traditional rulers in conflict resolution based on age and marital status. Based on the findings of the study, it was therefore, recommended that traditional rulers in the state should be familiar with the issues that are germane among individuals, social groups as well as providing the possible resolution to any conflict among them in the state purposely to enhance and facilitate sustainable democracy in the society.Item SOCIAL DEPRIVATIONS AND ACCESS TO LIFE-SAVING FACILITIES AMONG TERTIARY STUDENTS IN ILORIN, KWARA STATE.(Department of Publishing and Web Development, University of Ecucation, Winneba, Ghana, 2017-12) Okafor, Ifeoma P.; Balogun, Abdulrasaq O; Iyekolo, A. Olushola; Abdullaziz, IsiakaAbstract The study empirically finds out incidences, causes and impacts of social deprivation among undergraduates in public and private Universities in Ilorin, Kwara State. From the population of undergraduates in the three randomly selected federal, state and private universities located in the state capital, random sampling technique was used to sample a total of 645 respondents out of which only 409 said they felt socially deprived. Data was collected using a questionnaire instrument which had four sections. The collected data was analyzed using percentages. Findings shows that 65.36% of undergraduates in federal universities, 81.81% of those in state university and 40.21% of private university of the three types of university said they had been deprived against in all areas of their lives. It was recommended that government should come up with policies that can eradicate social deprivations among tertiary students in Nigeria.Item TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION ON QUALITY ASSURANCE IN TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMMES IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIIES: CHALLENGES AND WAY FORWARD(Department of Psychology and Education, University of Education, Winneba., 2019) Olokooba, Issa Nasiru; Okunloye, Rotimi William; Uyanne, Elizabeth O.; Okafor, Ifeoma P.The expectation of the labour market on the quality of graduates produced by Faculties of Education in Nigeria universities has become burning issues that many stakeholders in the education sector felt unsatisfactory. It becomes imperative to assess the challenges of quality assurance in teacher education. This study therefore assessed quality assurance in teacher education in Nigerian universities: challenges and way forward. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was all university teachers in Faculties of Education in universities in Kwara State, Nigeria. A purposive sampling technique was used to select two hundred and forty university teachers. A researcher-design questionnaire was used for data collection for the study. The data collected were analysed using means ranking and standard deviation. The findings of the study showed that the provision of teachers with adequate academic and professional formative experience for teaching and control of examination system with clear procedures as well as ethics of confidentiality and impartiality are the most needed qualities to be assured in teacher education. Overcrowding that leads to poor classroom management and control; instability of academic calendar and adoption of outdated curriculum and inadequate exposure to practical teaching that ensure professionalism are the major challenges in the teacher education. As way out to the challenges, broaden the curriculum of research methodology to improve the student’s project writing skills and emphasis on the acquisition of knowledge in the teaching subject pedagogy, entrepreneurial studies, and computer literacy for functional education need to be considered. Based on the findings, it was recommended that internal quality assessment in teacher education should be strengthened in the Faculties of Education that would allow for improved pre-service teacher quality products in Teacher Education in Nigerian universities.
