Item Anacardium occidentale and Psidium guajava effectively reduced ethanol- induced gastric ulcer in male Wistar rats.(College of Health Sciences, 2016) Oyabambi, A.O; Oyeniyi, P.O; Ojulari, L.S; Oladoye, O.DUlcer is one of the world‟s major gastrointestinal disorders affecting a good percentage of the populace in industrialised and developing countries. Plant extracts are some of the most attractive sources of new drugs and have shown promising results for the treatment of gastric ulcer as they possess a variety of natural therapeutic products. This study aimed to look at the effect of combining Anacardium Occidentale and Psidium Guajava on the management of gastric ulcer. The extracts of the leaves of Anacardium occidentale and Psidium guajava were tested in ethanol-induced ulcer models in rats. Oral administration of these plant extracts and reference drug was done for two weeks for 30 male Wistar rats divided into five (5) groups. The treatment with the combination of the extract stock solutions at a dose of 150mg/kg each exhibited a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in gastric volume, 2.1x10-3 mEq/L and ulceration, 2.0±0.26 than the individual extract groups when compared to control 4.0x10-3 mEq/L and 5.2±0.60 respectively while cimetidine at the dose tested had the highest percentage reduction. The efficacy of the extracts presented here confirms that the combination of Anacardium occidentale and Psidium guajava possess better synergistic ulcer healing and gastro protective effects than the individual components. This affirms their efficacy in the management of ulcersItem Nauclea Latifolia (African Peach) Attenuates Gastric Acid Secretion in Rats with Ethanol-Induced Ulceration(Faculty of Health Sciences, Al-Hikmah University, 2021) Balogun, M.E.,; Umahi, G.O.,; Ayinde, T.O.,; Oluwasola, A.,; Busari, A.O.,; Ajibola, K.A.,; Yusuf, R.O.; Ojulari, L.SItem Perception of cheek dimples amongst the Yorubas in Nigeria(College of Health Sciences, 2014-07) OMOTOSO, G.0; Ojulari, L.S; Oyabambi, A.OThe attitude of people toward cheek dimples differs based on gender, culture an geographical location. This survey was done to determine the attitude of people of the same cultural background towards the presence of cheek dimples. The respondents, which were randomly selected, were Yoruba speaking indigenes of southwest Nigeria. They were served with structured questionnaires by hand. Out of 500 questionnaires, 411 were returned correctly filled, representing 82.2% response rate. The age range of respondent was between 16 and 35 with majority (90.3%) between ages 16 and 25. Only 108 out 411 (26.3%) had cheek dimples, out of which 63 (58.3%) were females and 45 (41.7%) were males, with most dimples occurring between ages 16 and 20 (53.7%). Most of the respondents like cheek dimples, and many that did not have cheek dimples especially females, signified their interest in having dimples. Willingness to have cheek dimples were due to some importance attached to dimples such as its aesthetic value, admiration and the fact that those who have cheek dimples appear younger than their age.Item Pregnancy and Fetal Outcomes Following Metformin Use in Diabetic Rats(African Scientist, 2017-03-31) Ojulari, L.S; Morakinyo, A.O; Amali, M.O; Adegoke, O.AThe female reproductive system is responsible for pregnancy and supports development of the fetus. Theincidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing rapidly worldwide (Wild et al., 2000). Metformin is an oral antidiabetic drug and it seems to have properties that could be beneficial in managing reproductive complications of DM. The present study determined the effect of metformin on pregnancy and fetal outcomes in Alloxan-induced diabetic female Sprague-Dawley rats. Eighty (80) pregnant rats were divided into four groups (20 rats per group). Implantation and pregnancy were first ascertained, and fetal outcome was observed and recorded. The measurement of plasma levels of βhCG, estradiol, progesterone, corticosterone and C-reactive peptide (CRP); were carried out on days 7, 14, 19 and at term. Results were analyzed using ANOVA and Newman Keuls post hoc test with statistical significance taken at p<0.05. Results showed a significant (p<0.05) increase in plasma level of progesterone and estradiol with a significant reduction in CRP levels in the treated groups. The number of fetuses and average litter size was also significantly reduced (p<0.05) in the untreated diabetic rats. No physical abnormalities were observed in litters from all the experimental groups. In conclusion, metformin administration during pregnancy confers maternal and fetal protective effects.
