Item Bad Governance in Nigeria(College of Humanities, Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Edo State, Nigeria, 2018-06) Odeigah, Theresa NfamBad governance in Nigeria is an issue that has elicited reactions from different perspectives globally. The effect of bad governance in Nigeria is examined from the study of the Eastern Niger Delta of Nigeria, which is one of the most populous regions endowed with abundant natural resources and numerous human capitals. Despite the endowments of the Eastern Niger Delta, the region grapples with poor economy and human capital development since the political independence of the country in 1960. The main trust of this paper therefore is that had governance and the resulting corruption are responsible for structural conflicts in Nigeria. The study adopted a historic and multi-disciplinary approach to conclude that bad leadership and governance are the root cause of conflicts in the Eastern Niger Delta.Item A Brief Assessment of the Impact of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and Sani Abacha's Regimes on the Growth of Nigeria's Economy(Department of History & Diplomatic Studies, Taraba State University, Jalingo, 2020-04) Odeigah, Theresa NfamCorruption ridden exploitation of the natural resources, especially oil deposit, due to visionary leadership has been the major cause of colossal economic loss in the country. This was more glaring during the General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida and General Sani Abacha's military dictatorship. This accounts for why, particularly, economic development in the well-endowed Eastern Niger Delta area has left not much to be desired. It is not only these case with the Eastern Niger Delta area, but with the entire nation because corruption has seemingly become our national life.Item CHILD ABUSE: THREAT TO NATION BUILDING IN THE EASTERN NIGER DELTA, NIGERIA C. 1999-2017(The Department of History and International Studies, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin Nigeria., 2016-12) Odeigah, Theresa NfamThe problem of child maltreatment has remained with us for a long time for cultural and several other reasons. This serious social menace has recently gained some recognition and attention in the Eastern Niger Delta area of Nigeria, due to increasing awareness and education among the populace created by some nongovernmental agencies. These acts of neglect, exploitation, physical, sexual abuse, psychological and emotional abuse have negatively affected the children. All these negative effects leading to mal adaptation have eventually led some of the children into criminal activities, unplanned pregnancies, robbery, illicit drugs use and violence. The study adopts both primary and secondary sources. It examined child abuse as an impediment to nation building in the Eastern Niger Delta area of Nigeria using a historic-structural and multi-disciplinary approaches. The study concludes that poor parenting, poverty, unemployment, maternal depression, unintended conception, large family size, weak institutions such as the Nigeria police force, National Agency for the prohibition of Trafficking in Persons among others, remain major reasons for child maltreatment in the area and are therefore, impediments to nation building. There is therefore an urgent need for government to re-direct its policy on child protection in order to curb the menace in Niger Delta. It is only then that socio-economic development of the people would be guaranteed.Item Conflict, Co-Existence and Development(Department of History and International Relation, Veritas University, Abuja-Nigeria, 2018) Odeigah, Theresa NfamThe main thrust of this paper is to explore the causes as well as the impact of conflicts and civil unrest on Nigeria's Niger Delta development as well as make recommendations on how the conflicts can be resolved or at least managed peacefully on a permanent basis. The study adopted a historic-structural and multidisciplinary approaches. Ethno-religious crises, political intrigues, contests for resources, struggles over identity, poverty, bad leadership, corruption among others are rife in Nigeria's Niger Delta and therefore developmental strides are significantly circumscribed. Criminality has engendered widespread insecurity and fear that has hindered economic and business activities in this area of Nigeria that is endowed with enormous oil and gas resources. Since the advent of crude oil exploration in Nigeria in 1956, the nation has not witnessed this magnitude of destruction of her national oil and gas assets. Criminal activities such as youth restiveness, militancy, pipeline vandalism, oil theft, kidnapping, abduction, assassinations, armed robbery, political thuggery, vandalisation of national power installations among other crimes, have imposed serious challenges on governance and nation building. igeria has lost over 60 of her crude oil foreign exchange earnings needed urgently to deflate the economy at this period of global economic recession to criminality in the Eastern Niger Delta. The main thrust of this paper is to critically examine the implications on nation building of the recent upsurge in violence and vandalism by terrorist groups in the Eastern Niger Delta area of Nigeria. The study will adopt a historic-structural, multi-disciplinary and analytic approach to this problem. The analysis has shown that a mono-product economy, poor leadership, loss of traditional values, an all pervading corru ption and a culture of impunity are impediments to nation building.Item Cultural Practices, HIV/AIDS and Economic Viability among Women in Cross-River State(Department of History and International Relation, Veritas University, Abuja-Nigeria, 2017) Odeigah, Theresa NfamThe Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV) and the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is a terminal phase of HIV infection, emerged as a pandemic over three decades ago. The disease has imposed a heavy threat to the health of many women and it is a big burden to them economically, socially, psychologically and even culturally. HIV is a virus that attacks the body's defence system rendering it vulnerable to many other diseases and complications. This study examines HIV/AIDS and the associated economic scourge among women living with HIV/AIDS in Cross-River State of Nigeria. Nigerian leaders over the years have failed to adequately fund and develop vital sectors of the economy such as energy, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and the solid minerals sector. Leaders in Nigeria have also not developed sustainable administrative systems and institutions that can stand the test of time and that cannot be manipulated by self-seeking leaders. the neglect of these vital sectors that would have driven the economy and created job opportunities as well as empowering the teeming population of young people in the Eastern Niger Delta Region is a failure of leadership in Nigeria.Item THE DYNAMICS OF UNEMPLOYMENT AND CRIMINALITY IN THE EASTERN NIGER DELTA AREA OF NIGREIA(The Department of History and International Studies, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria., 2016) Odeigah, Theresa NfamThe upsurge in criminal activities such as violent crimes, mindless vandalism and the widespread insecurity in the Eastern Niger Delta area of Nigeria has become a menace. These crimes are largely traceable to the rising unemployment rate in the area over the years. Today, youth restiveness, militancy, pipeline vandalism, oil theft, kidnapping, abduction, assassinations, armed robbery, cultism, prostitution, advanced fee fraud, cyber-crime, substance abuse, drug trafficking, human trafficking, political thuggery and vandalism of national power installations, among other criminal acts, have become daily occurrences in the region. A new and scary dimension with its serious effect on our crude oil export and foreign exchange earnings has since been added to these social ills, following the recent upsurge in violent campaigns for secession by militant groups, particularly the Niger Delta Avengers in the area. The primary thrust of this paper is to ascertain the causes and the consequences of unemployment and criminality in the Eastern Niger Delta area of Nigeria. This study therefore adopts a historic-structural and multidisciplinary approaches to explicate this menace. The paper concludes that rising unemployment, poor infrastructural development, gaps in our tertiary educational system and corruption, are responsible for the rising wave of criminality in the area.Item GLOBALIZATION AND THE CHANGE AGENDA IN NIGERIAN BANKING AND TELE-COMMUNICATION SECTORS(A Publication of the Facult of Humanities, Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil Kano, 2016-06) Odeigah, Theresa NfamTransformation and change has taken place in different sectors in Nigeria as a result of globalization forces boosting interconnectivity and economic restructuring. In Nigeria, for example the inception of the East India Company and the Royal Niger Company in 1879, planted the first seed of poverty and underdevelopment in the Nigeria's Delta Region, heretofore referred to as the Delta Region. After the decolonisation of Nigeria in 1960, the British government and other European countries like French, Spain, Netherlands and Germany, among others, saw the large African market potential as one way of keeping a grip on Africa — through what has come to be known as neo-colonialism — while continuing the siphoning of the continent's resources through the use of Multinational Corporations (Caves, 1994).Item Militancy and Conflicts in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria(2018) Odeigah, Theresa NfamThe Niger Delta region of Nigeria is endowed with abundant natural oil and gas resources and therefore has enormous potentials for the economic development of the country. Even before Nigeria gained political independence, oil and gas exploration activities had started in the region as early as 1955. The foreign exchange earnings that have accrued to the nation from oil exploration in the region have been largely responsible for the economic development, albeit limited, that Nigeria has witnessed.Item Oil Exploration in the Eastern Niger Delta Region(Department of History and International Studies, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin-Nigeria, 2018-06) Odeigah, Theresa NfamThe Eastern Niger Delta region of Nigeria is endowed with abundant natural and human resources and enormous economic potentials. Exxon Mobile began exploration for oil and gas in the Eastern Niger Delta region of 1955, before Nigeria got her independence. The activities of the Exxon Mobile have always had a disastrous effect on the livelihood of the host communities. The company has provided limited employment opportunities following the Nigerian indigenization policy of the 1980s. Exxon Mobile operational activities also brought massive environmental degradation in Eket since oil exploration began in the area.Item The Police Force as a Facilitator of the Electoral Process: Evidence from the 2015 Elections in Nigeria(A Publication of the Facult of Humanities, Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil Kano, 2018-04) Odeigah, Theresa Nfam; Oguchi, Chinwenba Benjamin; Abah, DanladiThe Nigeria Police (NP) is the principal law enforcement agency in Nigeria with a staff strength of about 371,000. There are currently plans to increase the force to 650,000 by adding 280,000 new recruits to the existing 370,000. It is a very large organisation which consists of 36 commands grouped into 12 zones and 7 administrative organs. The force is currently headed by IGP Ibrahim Idris. The police in Nigeria was established as a force (an organisation) in 1820 with officers form present Imo State and commissioner general, colonel KK as the first pers to attain the highest rank. In 1879, a 1,200 member armed paramilitary Hausa constabulary was formed and by 1896, the Lagos police was established. There was also the formation of the Niger coast constabulary earlier in 1894 in Calabar under the newly proclaimed Niger coast protectorate. In the North the Royal Niger company set up the Royal Niger company constabulary in 1888. On amalgamation in early 1900s, part of the Royal Niger company constabulary became the Northern Nigeria Police while part of the Niger coast constabulary became the Southern Nigeria police. During the colonial era, most police were associated with local governments (native authorities) In the sixties (60s), under the First Republic, these forces were regionalised and nationalised.Item Poverty in the Midst of Plenty: A study of Poverty and underdevelopment in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria(Langaa Research and Publishing Common Initiative Group, 2017) Odeigah, Theresa NfamNiger Delta Region of Nigeria is endowed with abundant natural and human resources which explains its enormous economic potentials. Political independence held out bright prospects of sustained economic development and prosperity for the region and the country at large. Ironically, the region has lagged behind other oil producing states in the world, in terms of economic development and self-empowerment of the people in the region. A combination of factors account for the unsavoury situation namely, poor leadership and governance, imperial history, human and property insecurity, insurgency, terrorism, vandalism, neo-colonialism, endemic corruption, neglect of agriculture, criminality and a general lack of infrastructural development, among others.
