Item Adjustment strategies toward menopause-related problems employed by menopausal women in Kwara state, Nigeria: Implications for counselling(Faculty of Education, University of Port-Harcourt, Nigeria, 2014) Adegboyega, Lateef Omotosho; Oniye, Abdulrasaq O.; Odebode, Aminat Adeola; Ajiboye, Samuel K.Menopause may be marked by a gradual decline in menstruation or in its frequency or it may cease abruptly. The objective of this study was to investigate the adjustment strategies toward menopause-related problems employed by menopausal women in Kwara State, Nigeria. The researchers thus investigated whether or not there was a significant difference in the adjustment strategies to menopause-related problems employed by menopausal women in Kwara State on the bases of religion and job type. Descriptive survey research procedure was adopted for the study. The Multistage sampling technique was used to draw a sample of 466 respondents.The instrument for data collection was the Adjustment Strategies towards Menopause-related Problems Questionnaire (ASMPQ). Research questions were raised while research hypotheses formulated were tested;the data collected were analysed through the use of frequency counts, percentages, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there was no significant difference in the adjustment strategies towards menopause-related problems of menopausal women on the bases of religion and type of job.Item Caregivers' Perception of the Consequences of Breast Cancer in Kwara State, Nigeria: Implications for Health Educators(Maiduguri Journal of Educational Studies, 2017-09) Odebode, Aminat Adeola; Adebayo, David Obafemi; Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam Bukola; Okesina, Falilat AnikeBreast cancer is one of the most common cancers and the highest leading cause of death among women. This study investigated the caregivers' perception of the consequences of breast cancer in Kwara State. Differences in the participants' perception based on duration of care giving and level of education were also examined. This study employed a descriptive survey method. A sample of 100 women, who are caregivers, selected through purposive sampling participated in the participants in the study. A self - designed questionnaire titled Consequences of Breast Cancer Questionnaire, (CBCQ) was used for data collection. The validity of the instrument was done by experts in the Departments of Counsellor Education and Behavioural Science, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The reliability of the instrument was established using split-half reliability method and correlation of 0.62 was obtained. The data were analysed using frequency counts, percentages and means and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha level. The finding revealed that caregivers perceived consequences of breast cancer to be depression, chronic pain, emotional distress and death. It was also revealed that there were no significant differences in the participants' perception of the consequences of breast cancer based on duration of care giving and level of education. Conclusion was drawn that the consequences of breast cancer are devastating therefore, health educators should train caregivers through organization of workshops, on how to handle the consequences of breast cancer, with the aim of helping women with breast cancer cope with the found consequences.Item CAUSES OF EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE AS PERCEIVED BY TEACHERS OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA: IMPLICATIONS FOR COUNSELLING PRACTICE(Department of Educational Foundations, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, 2017-05) Odebode, Aminat Adeola; Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam Bukola; Akinyemi, Obafolahan BolakaleThis study investigated the causes of examination malpractices as perceived teachers of secondary school in Lagos State. Moderating variables of god' length of years in service and school type were also examined. Descriptive sury research design was adopted for the study. A total of 600 respondents from thr senatorial districts were selected using a three-stage sampling procedure Ail comprised simple random and purposive sampling techniques. The instrument us' for data collection was a questionnaire titled "causes of Examination Malpracti Questionnaire (CEMQ)". The validity of the instrument was established by .fr! experts in the Department of counselor Education, University of florin, Nige while, the reliability was determined using test re-test method and a correlati coefficient of 0.87 was obtained. One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) andi test statistical tools .were used to analyze the data and the formulated hypothes at 0.05 alpha level. Result showed that teachers of secondary schools in Lagos Sta perceived the causes of examination malpractice as societal preferences fo certificates, poor self-concept, lack of adequate learning facilities (librari laboratories etc) and teachers not considering the slow learners while icachindifference in the causes of examination malpractice as perceived by teachers o secondary schools in Lagos State based on gender, length of years in service, by there was no significant difference based on subject taught and school type.Bas on the findings of this study, it was recommended that Government should plat more emphasis on knowledge and skill acquisition and not on certificates, certificates may not be a true measure of individual's abilities. Teachers shou consider more, students who are slow learners when teaching.Item Determinants of Secondary School Students' Academic Performance as Perceived by Secondary School Teachers in Ilorin West Local Government, Kwara State(Al-Hikma Journal of Education, 2016) Okesina, Falilat Anike; Ajiboye, Samuel Kolawole; Odebode, Aminat AdeolaThe paper investigated the determinants of secondary school students' academic performance as perceived by secondary school teachers in florin West Local Government Kwara State, Nigeria. The differences in the respondents' expression on the bases of age, gender school type were also examined. A total of 200 teachers were selected using stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Data was collected from the respondents with the use of a Researcher-designed instrument entitled "Determinants of Student's Academic Performance Questionnaire (DSAPQ). The validity of the instrument was done by experts and the reliability of the instrument was ascertained using test re-test reliability method with r value of 0.89. The hypotheses generated were analyzed using the t-test statistics and Analysis of variants (ANOV4) at 0,05 alpha level. Result showed that the major determinants of academic performance are lack of available resource materials, students' poor study habits and poor knowledge of English Language. The study indicted no significant difference in the perception of teachers on the determinants of academic performance based on gender and type of school, however, there was a significant difference based on age. Recommendations were made that school administrations should provide proper learning resource materials for students; counsellors should help students to cultivate good study and reading habits. M.Premarital sex among students of tertiary institution is increasing at an alarming rate in Nigeria, therefore this study sought to find out the factors influencing premarital sex among students of tertiary institution in Ilorin, Kwara state. Variables such as age, religion, gender and type of institutions were considered inrelation to the study. The researchers developed a questionnaire tagged factors influencing premarital sex among students of tertiary institutions (FPSSIIQ) which was used to collect data from the respondents. A two stage sampling technique was used to select 520 respondents that participate in the study. Hypothesis were formulated and tested at 0.05 level significance data collected were analysed using t-tested and analysis variance (ANOVA). The result showed that there was no significant difference on the factors influencing premarital sex among students of tertiary institution in Ilorin, Kwara state on the basis of age, gender, religion, institution, but there is a significant difference in the factors influencing premarital sex among students of tertiary institution in Ilorin, Kwara state on the basis type of institutions. The inability of health personnel to meet patients’ expectations may lead to poor consultation outcomes and patients’ dissatisfaction. The objective of this study is to investigate the health care expectations of out-patients of UITH, Nigeria and to examine the influence of gender and age on respondents’ views. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for this study was all out-patients in UITH, Nigeria. A total of 900 respondents were selected using a three-stage sampling procedure which comprised simple random sampling, purposive and systematic random sampling techniques. The instrument used for data collection was a self-designed questionnaire titled “Health Care Expectations Questionnaire’’. The validity of the questionnaire was established by Five experts in the Departments of Counsellor Education, Behavioral Sciences and Tests and Measurement, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined using split-half method and a correlation coefficient of 0.78 was obtained. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-test statistical tools were used to test the formulated hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The findings showed that the expectations of out-patients in teaching hospitals in Nigeria include functional equipment, appropriate treatment, appropriate care, efficient staff, clean environment, and friendly staff. Significant difference was found on the basis of age. The study concluded that government should provide modern equipment in hospitals through appropriate funding. This study investigated marital breakdown and socio-emotional development of adolescents in Ibadan Metropolis, Oyo State. Correlational research design was adopted for this study. An instrument which consisted of three sections, titled ‘Marital Breakdown and Socioemotional Development Questionnaire (MBSDQ) was used to collect information from the respondents. The validity of the instrument was done by experts in the Departments of Psychology and Counsellor Education, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The reliability of the same was established using test re-test reliability method and correlation coefficients of 0.71 respectively was obtained. The descriptive data were analyzed using mean while the hypothesis was analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation at 0.05 level of significance. Result showed that the indices of marital breakdown is manifested in spouses having different ideas on issues, insulting each other, frequent fighting, and doing things separately among others. The indices of socio-emotional development (which is in this case is poor) are loneliness, depression, inability to accept feelings from others, feelings of hatred towards oneself, feelings of inferiority complex and feelings of hatred towards parents among others. There is a significant relationship between marital breakdown and socioemotional development of adolescents. The main objective of this study is to investigate the menopause-related problems of menopausal women in Kwara State, Nigeria. The researchers thus investigated whether or not there was a significant difference in the menopause-related problems of menopausal women in Kwara State on the bases of age and highest educational attainment. Descriptive survey research procedure was adopted for the study. The Multistage sampling technique was used to draw a sample of 466 respondents. The instrument for data collection was the Menopause-related Problems Questionnaire (MPQ). Research questions were raised while research hypotheses formulated were tested. The data collected were analysed through the use of frequency counts, percentages, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there was a significant difference in the menopause-related problems experienced by menopausal women in Kwara State on the bases of age and highest educational attainment. It was therefore recommended among others that in order to bring about meaningful family wellbeing, married people and other stakeholders should be sensitized by marital counsellors on the nature of menopause and its related problems through accurate education.Item Motivation for Alcohol Consumption among Students of Tertiary Institutions in Abeokuta, Nigeria(Ilorin Journal of Education, 2016-02) Odebode, Aminat Adeola; Okesina, Falilat Anike,; Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi AbdulQuadriAlcohol consumption has assumed a worrisome trend among students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This study investigates the motivation for alcohol consumption among students of tertiary in Abeokuta, Nigeria. The differences in the respondents' expression on the bases of gender, type of institution and family type were also examined. The descriptive survey was considered appropriate for this study. Two hundred students of tertiary institutions in Abeokuta were selected using Purposive and Simple Random Sampling Techniques. The participants responded to the Motivation for Alcohol Consumption Questionnaire, (MACQ). The validity of the instrument was done by experts and the reliability of the instrument was ascertained with r value of 0.80. The data collected were analysed using t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical tools at 0.05 alpha level. Results showed that the motivation for alcohol consumption due to desire to reduce academic stress (X: 3.29), prevailing peer group influence (X: 3.29), feelings of inferiority complex (X: 3.04), and desire to overcome psychological problems (X: 2-94). It was also revealed that there were no significant differences in the motivation for alcohol consumption among students of tertiary institutions in Abeokuta on the bases of gender (t: 1.96>0.30), type of institution (f: 3.00>2.67) and family type (f: 3.00>1.01). The implication of this study for counselling practice and professional counsellors is that effort should be put in place to dissuade the minds of students of tertiary institutions from consuming alcohol and direct their energy towards self-benefiting activities. Counsellors should assist students to wade off prevailing peer influence and help them to develop good study habit skills. Counsellors need to counsel students of tertiary irrespective of gender or type of institution, to employ appropriate strategies in coping with academic stress rather than consuming alcohol.Item Perception of Nigerian parents on the influence of visual media on social behaviour of children(Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin, 2019-03) Odebode, Aminat AdeolaGenerally, children apart from playing with peers find solace in visual media; this study therefore examined the perception of Nigerian parents on the influence of visual media on social behaviour of children. The Descriptive survey design was employed for the study. Data were collected from 200 Nigerian parents who were drawn using purposive and random sampling techniques. The result showed that Nigerian parents perceived that visual media has negative influence on social behaviour of children. The findings also revealed no significant difference in the perception of Nigerian parents on the influence of visual media on social behaviour of children based on gender, but significant differences were found based on age and educational attainment. This study investigated the problems associated with single parenting as expressed by literate single parents in Ilorin metropolis. The differences in the respondents' expression on the bases of gender, age and type of occupation were also examined. Two hundred (200) literate single parents were selected in Ilorin metropolis using convenience sampling technique. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The instrument used was a researcher-designed questionnaire entitled "Problems Associated with Single Parenting Questionnaire (PAPSQ)". The validity of the instrument was done by experts in the Department of Counsellor Education, University of Ilorin while its reliability was ascertained using test-retest reliability method with r-value of 0.68. The data collected were analysed using t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical tools at 0.05 alpha level. The findings showed that the problems associated with single parenting are loneliness, sense of guilt, deteriorating health profile, financial difficulty, and inability to give children adequate discipline among others. The findings also revealed that there were no significant differences in the problems associated with single parenting on the bases of age, gender and type of occupation of the respondents. Based on the findings, it was recommended that counsellors, psychologists, family therapists and social workers should sensitise people about problems associated with single parenting. In addition, single parents should be helped to resolve and cope with the problems associated with single parenting.Item Psycho-social challenges of unemployed youths in Kwara state, Nigeria(Department of Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers state, Nigeria, 2016) Odebode, Aminat Adeola; Adegboyega, Lateef Omotosho; Korode, G.T.Unemployment is a global phenomenon facing every country in the world. It is a social ill that leads youths to crime, delinquencies, robbery, restiveness, poverty, among others. In this regard, this study investigated the psycho-social challenges of unemployed youths in Kwara State, Nigeria. The influence of variables such as gender, highest educational level and age were also examined on the psycho-social challenges of unemployed youths. Quantitative research design was adopted for this study, while descriptive survey was also adopted as a research method for this study. Random and purposive sampling techniques were used to draw a total sample of 600. “Psycho-social Challenges of Unemployed Youths Questionnaire (PSCUYQ)” was used to collect relevant data. The study revealed that poverty, lack of access to capital, and poor entrepreneurial skills were the most prominent psycho-social challenges confronting unemployed youths in Kwara State. The research hypotheses tested revealed no significant difference in the psycho-social challenges of unemployed youths in Kwara State based on gender while there were significant differences based on educational qualification and age. In line with the findings of the study, it was recommended that Nigerian government should design more vocational programmes and revitalizes the existing ones; provide take-off grants for unemployed youths to establish businesses. School Counsellors in conjunction with school authority and staff should work together to provide adequate vocational training relevant to the needs of the society to students.Item A qualitative analysis of perceived attitudes of health personnel by out-patients of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, North-West Nigeria(Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt, Nigeria, 2017) Odebode, Aminat AdeolaHealth personnel and patients' relationship is a major source of concern among management of health institutions in Nigeria. This may be related to the view of many Nigerians who have suffered from the non-challant and negative attitude of health personnel. This study therefore, investigated perceived attitudes of health personnel by out-patients of a Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A total of 30 out-patients in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital,. Kano (North-West — Nigeria) were selected using systematic random sampling technique. The instrument used for data colleCtion was a Focus Group DiSCUssion Schedule. The validity of the instrument was established by five experts in the Departments of Counsellor Education and Department of Behavioural Sciences, University of llorin, Nigeria. The instrument was pilot tested to assess its usability. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data collected. The findings showed that medical doctors in Nigeria were perceived to have positive attitudes towards patients. However, other health personnel were perceived to have negative attitudes. The study concluded that counsellors need to collaborate with health personnel tosupport doctors to maintain and sustain such positive attitudes. Counsellors should develop a course or programme that would help other health personnel< to develop positive attitudes towards patients. The researchers thus investigated whether or not there was a significant different in the sources of marital stress of people in polygamous marriages in Kwara State on the bases of gender, religious affiliation and educational attainment. Descriptive survey research procedure was adopted for the study. The multistage sampling technique was used to draw a sample of 600 respondents. The instrument for data collection was the Sources of Marital Stress Questionnaire (SMSQ). Research questions were raised while research hypotheses formulated were tested. The data collected were analyzed through the use of frequency counts, percentages, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that inability of husbands/wives to meet the sexual demands of wives/husband was the major source of marital stress of people in polygamous marriage. Based on the findings, there is a need for proper enlightenment on marital counsellling for the singles and the married on the stress associated with polygamous marriages
