Item ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING DIFFICULTIES IN ECONOMICS AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN LAGOS MAINLAND LOCAL GOVERNMENT(DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES EDUCATION, FACULTY OF EDUCATION, UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN, 2019) BADAMAS, O.L.; UYANNE, E.O.; ONIYE, R.K.Abstract The importance of Economics education to any nation is to enable both leaders and citizens to understand the basic economics concepts and the principles needed to improve the economic situation of the individual country. Several studies have been carried out to investigate students' attitude towards Economics as a school subject. The purpose of this study is to assess the learning difficulties in economics among senior secondary school students in Lagos mainland local government. Two research questions and one research hypothesis were raised and tested for this study. The sample comprises of 100 senior secondary school students selected randomly from five public schools. The research design adopted for this study was descriptive type of survey. The instrument used for data collection in this study was a self-designed questionnaire. Research question one and two were answered using frequency count, percentage and mean while t-test was used to test the research hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings showed that, perceived difficult concepts in Economics by senior secondary school students are Nigerian Economic Sectors, Economic Theories, Market Structure, Public Finance, International Economic Organizations and Economic Growth and Development. Another finding showed that, there was no significant difference in students' learning difficulties in Economics based on gender. It was recommended that; Adequate attention and preparation should be given to those identified difficult concepts in Economics during teaching and learning processes. This will enable the students to overcome those difficulties.Item Assessment Of The Perception Of University Undergraduates Students As Regards The Effect Of Economic Recession On University Undergraduates' Motivation To Learning(2018) BELLO, M.B.; ONIYE, R.K.; OKAFOR, I.P.; AJAYI, O.B.The study investigated the effect of the contemporary economic recession on university undergraduates in three selected Universities in Nigeria. A descriptive form of the survey was employed. 727 undergraduates from 300 and 400 levels in the three Universities were sampled using stratified sampling techniques. A 13 items Likert-scale questionnaire titled, "Assessment of effects of economic recession on University Undergraduates with psychometric properties of content validity and reliability index of 0.78 was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics were used to answer the research questions, the findings revealed that economic recession affects university undergraduates' motivation to learning. Students are forced to engage in antisocial behaviour in order to meet needs during the period of economic recession and participate less in extra-curricular activities. Based on these findings, it was recommended among others that government should as a matter of urgency address the lingering economic recession as it has an untold effect on undergraduate students learning.Item Prevalence and Determinants of Sexting Behaviour Among Undergraduates in Kwara State(Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) in collaboration with Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science (IAES), 2019) BALOGUN, A.O.; OBIMUYIWA, G.A; ABDULAZIZ, I.; ONIYE, R.K.This study investigates the prevalence and determinants of sexting behaviour among undergraduates in Kwara State. The population for this study comprised all undergraduates in Kwara State while the target population was undergraduates of three universities in the Kwara States. A stratified sampling the technique was used to categorise universities based on ownership (Federal, State and Private) as well as gender. A random sampling technique was used to select 100 undergraduates from each university, totaling 300 respondents. A researcher-designed questionnaire titled Prevalence and Determinants of Sexting Behaviour Questionnaire (PASODOEBEQ) was used to elicit information from sampled respondents. The instrument was validated by experts in Sociology of Education and Educational Psychology. Test re-test method of reliability was applied to test the reliability of the instrument, using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics. The coefficient value of 0.86r was derived. The data collected were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation and Multiple Regression Statistical Tool. The result of the findings revealed that sexting behaviour is prevalent among undergraduates and low self-esteem and peer association are significant determinants. The study recommended among others that schools authorities as a matter of fact should organize a sensitization workshop or seminar for undergraduates on the meaning, ripple effects and the punishment associated with sexting behaviour for necessary social adjustment.Item PREVALENCE, CAUSES AND PERCIEVED EFFECT OF COMMERCIAL SEX AMONGST STUDENTS OF TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN KWARA STATE(Department of Human Kinetics and health Education, Faculty of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria., 2020) ONIYE, R.K.This study investigates prevalence, causes and the effect of commercial sex amongst students of tertiary institutions in Kwara state. It was guided by four research questions. This study is a descriptive survey design that involves a sample of 50 students from four randomly selected tertiary institutions, making a total of 200 respondents with data collected using a researcherdesigned questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics of frequency count, simple percentage, mean and standard deviation were adopted in analyzing the research questions. The result of this finding revealed that the level of prevalence of commercial sex was neither high nor low amongst students of tertiary institutions as they involve in sex work to fund their education; the number of which are thought to have increased with the introduction of top-up tuition fees; negative exposure to sexual contents on TVs and internet; and heart break and loneness. It was concluded that commercial sex promotes the spread of deadly diseases (especially STDs); lead to an increase in the rate of abortion in the society; difficulty in academic concentration among students and school dropout; physical hazards such as infertility, cervical cancer, etc.; degradation of personality; unwanted pregnancy and physical risk. It was recommended amongst others that proper parental care; parent's visitation to student's schools and hostels; sex education should be made compulsory at all educational levels; enactment of law to prohibit commercial sex among students by the government; besides, films stimulating sex interest and pornographic literature should be discouraged; the value of self-control should be taught at the early stageItem RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACADEMIC INDISCIPLINE AND FAILURE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOLSTUDENTS IN ILORIN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENTAREA, KWARA STATE(DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES EDUCATION, FACULTY OF EDUCATION, UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN, 2019) ONIYE, R.K.; SALIHU, A.; UYANNE, E.O.Examined by this study, is the relationship between academic indiscipline and failure among secondary school students in Ilorin west Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria. The forms of indiscipline, the rate of failure and causes of indiscipline among students were all examined. It was a descriptive survey type with the population covering all the teachers and students in Ilorin west Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria. Fifty secondary school teachers were sampled for this study using simple random sampling technique. Data was collected using a researcher designed questionnaire and pro forma while, the data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of percentage, mean, and inferential statistics of Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of this study revealed that possession of phones and lateness to schools, sneaking out of schools, absenteeism, not doing assignment and use of slang are forms of indiscipline that prevail in schools are forms of indiscipline that sometimes prevail in schools; the rate of failure of students in SSCE examinations is downfall in Ilorin west Local Government Area, Kwara State from 2013-2017; lack of teachers' commitment, poor parenting, drug abuse, poverty, Lack of good role models and broken home were affirmed as the causes of academic indiscipline and failure among students; there was a significant relationship between academic indiscipline and failure among secondary school students in Ilorin west Local Government Area, Kwara State. It was therefore recommended among others that there should be guidance and counselling personnel for students in every school so as not only to curb indiscipline among students in school but also to prioritize education and reduce the rate of failure among students; parents and teachers should serve as role models for students through the exhibition of good behavior that children/students can imitate and reproduce at homes and in schools; teachers should motivate students and integrate such teaching techniques that could reassure students with learning difficulties so as to reduce the rate of failure and academic indiscipline among students.
