    A Multimodal Discourse Analysis of English Speaking Mediun Nollywood Film Adverisement Posters

    The multimodal theory of communication establishes that meaning is multifaceted and can be disseminated in various forms both verbal and visual. The application of this versatile means of image-enabled communication is inherent in most modern technologies especially in film marketing strategy of the poster medium. It is to this end, that the paper sought to identify how meaning is organised and enacted in Nollywood film advertisement posters. Adopting a mixed method approach to data collection and analysis, Kress and van Leeuween’s Visual Grammar and van Leeuwen’s Multimodal communicative acts were deployed to the analysis of four randomly selected Nollywood film advertisement posters. The analysis revealed that visual semiotic resources are heavily grounded in the posters than linguistic resources but they both co-exist and integrate with each other to persuade viewers to patronise and view the films. The paper concludes that semiotic resources are a vital aspect of film advertisement posters because they have in them implicit persuasive strategies that require contextual knowledge for their encoding and interpretation.

    Multimodal Discourse Analysis of Nigerian Currency Notes

    Currency as a generally accepted form of money is a legal tender that serves as an individual’s “life support” and gives access to necessities of life. In most parts of the world, the presentation of notes and coins in exchange for goods and services forms the basis of communication between and amongst wide range of users. To a large extent, the Nigerian naira currencies are imbued with non-verbal cues such as symbols, graphics, images, text, colour and other super-imposed inter-related elements of composite language which provides various forms of meaning potentials. Apparently, the sole study of language via syntax cannot achieve the requirements of a comprehensive interpretation of the meaning of the expression in the various modes. Hence, this paper leans on multimodal discourse analysis as a theoretical basis and method of analysis by borrowing insights from Kress and van Leeuwen’s (1996/2006) social semiotic visual framework and Barthes (1977) concept of anchorage and relay to analyse Nigerian currency notes with the aim of unraveling the imports of multimodality borne by the currency notes to project meaning. Eight (8) Nigerian currency notes currently in circulation are identified and analysed qualitatively. It is observed that the currencies express the ideology of unity, socio-cultural identity, patriotism and nationism. The paper concludes that complementary meanings are distributed in the visual and verbal contents of the notes and are purportedly produced in both convergent and divergent forms.

    A Multimodal Discourse Analysis of some Wema Bank Poster Advertisements in Nigeria

    Advertisement has been used as a marketing strategy by corporate brands and individual bodies over the years. It has been deployed through various categories of mass media where the print advert cannot be divorced. This paper examines how language and visual modes interact in Wema bank poster advertisements and how they communicate and interact with the target audience. Four randomly selected posters from Wema bank 2017 diary are analysed qualitatively using inherent semiotic features. This was made feasible by employing integrated frameworks of Systemic Functional Visual Social Semiotic Approach to Multimodal Discourse Analysis by Kress and van Leeuwen (1996, 2006) and Yuen (2004) Generic Structure Potential. Furthermore, this paper also analyses the intersemiosis of the linguistic and the visual resources using Royce (2009) intersemiosis complementarity framework. It is observed that the verbal mode complements the visual mode and the two invariably, reinforces one another as units of meaning in projecting the demands of the advertisers. Similarly, it was found out that multiple modes appeal to the audience reasoning than the use of text in isolation. The study concluded that effective utilization of these modes in encoding the intention by advertisers and decoding meaning by the potential consumers will go a long way in enhancing effective communication.

    Politeness Strategies in Teacher-Student Conversations in the University of Ilorin

    Politeness is a universal phenomenon which serves as a means of avoiding conflict and promoting smooth communication among interlocutors in the face of complex interactions in the society. This paper therefore examines how politeness operates within the university milieu amongst interlocutors composed of teachers and students. A total of thirty oral discourses were selected between the interlocutors from various strategic locations in the University of Ilorin. Leaning on Brown and Levinson’s Face-threatening acts, Leech’s politeness principle maxims and Thomas’s politeness strategies, the thirty identified conversations were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively to reveal amongst other findings, that face-threatening acts, which underlie impoliteness are frequently used in the conversations. The asymmetric relationships between the interlocutors result in the frequent use of these face-threatening acts, mainly bald on record which is mostly used by the lecturers towards the students. The paper concludes that the increase in the upholding of politeness principle maxims by both interlocutors, especially the lecturers will go a long way to enhance smooth interactions and maintenance of harmonious relationships among discourse participants. In addition, the appreciation of individual self-worth in the university environment will be significantly enhanced if these politeness principle maxims are upheld.

    A Pragma Sociolinguistic Study of Selected Songs rendered at immunisation centres in Ilorin

    The symbiotic relationship between music and culture creates an avenue for the enactment and re-enactment of the attitudes and ideologies of people, as well as the structures in societies. The role of music as an educative tool may be traced in part, to the Traditional Grammar Translation and recital methods of teaching language. It was recorded that via these methods, students (through rhymes and sounds) were able to retain lessons taught in the classroom.Similarly, songs are utilised in health centres, particularly immunisation clinics in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria to sensitise nursing mothers on the roles they are meant as being the primary custodian of their children. The peculiarity of the importance of the songs which is influenced by the immediate physical context has motivated this reaearch. Thus, this study sought to carry out a systematic analysis of the effect of regional and social factors on the language (and by extension, the contents) of the songs. Twelve randomly selected songs were observed, recorded and translated following insights from literal translation with the aim of deploying socio-pragmatic features to their analysis. Also, the researchers interviewed some mothers at the clinic in order to validate the content analysis of the selected song. The findings reveal that the ages and ethnicity of the mothers present at the immunisation centre vary but despite these discrepancies, the songs are well-received and appreciated by the mothers in spite of age and ethnic barriers. The oral communicative features in the songs reveal implied messages or indirect acts. The nonverbal behaviours include physical and psychological acts. The potpourri of these language features reveals the practs and allopracts of: sensitising, informing, educating among others. Thus, it is needless to say that the goal for singing the songs is both for educative and entertainment functions or simply put, ‘edutainment’ purpose.

    Registers and Jargons in Specialist Domains

    People use different linguistic varieties in different situations and for different purposes. Speech thus, reflects and constructs the context in which language is used. The context of situation determines language use and usage and as such, different fields of academia and other varying spheres of human life are distinguished by the content and language use uniquely associated to them. The ability of an individual to manipulate and understand language discourses in different situations that confronts her/him is one of the essential tools for her/his success in the academia and the society at large. In this regard, it will be erroneous to say or use words not associated to the context which it is employed as it may impede effective communication or cause chaos between or among participants in such situations. These various contexts of speech situations are known as ‘Domains’; a term popularised by an American Sociolinguist called Joshua Fishman in the early 70’s to depict “a socio cultural construct abstracted from topics of communication, relationship between communicators, and locales of communication, in accord with the institution, of a society and area of activity…” (Fishman 1972, p.20). In simpler terms, Holmes (2008, p.21) corroborates this assertion by stating that “a domain involves a typical interaction between typical participants about a typical topic in a typical setting”. The essence of this is that the factors that influence the concept of domains are the participants involved in a discourse, the place where the conversation takes place and the topic being discussed. For instance, someone changes her language to the interlocutor’s language when discussing certain topics. Also, the choice of language use is conditioned by the people one is speaking with consequently, the physical setting or the occasion of the activity will also have some consequence on language use.
