Item Academic stress and social anxiety among undergraduates in University of Ilorin(Department of Human Kinetic and Health Education, Faculty of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, 2020-08) Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi Abdulqadir; Muhammed, Shuaib Abolakale; Oregbesan, LovePrevious studies have pointed out various ways in which university education predisposes students to psychological challenges such as anxiety, depression, stress and general poor health. Stress and social anxiety have been found to relate to diverse factors influencing academic performance and well-being of students. This study investigated academic stress and social anxiety among undergraduates of University of Ilorin. Descriptive survey was adopted to gather data for the study using academic stress and social anxiety scale. The instrument was validated by experts in the Department of Counsellor Education and its reliability was ascertained through the test re-test method. The reliability results of the two scales yielded 0.94 and 0.96 respectively. A total sample of four hundred and twenty (420) undergraduates participated in the study. The data obtained were analyzed using percentages. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-test were used to test the null hypotheses generated. Results indicated that larger percent of undergraduates in University of Ilorin reported high stress level. A significant proportion of the students experienced high level of social anxiety. Respondents differ in their expression of stress level on the bases of class level, mode of entry and type home. The level of social anxiety of undergraduates in the university is impacted by their age, gender, home type, study level and programme of study. It was recommended that University counsellors should take into consideration study level, mode of entry and type of home in designing and implementing stress management and social anxiety intervention programmes.Item Association between Emotional Intelligence and Bullying Roles of In-School Adolescents in Ilorin Metropolis(Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, 2018) Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi AbdulqadirStudies mostly from United States and Europe have looked into the relationship among emotion, emotional intelligence and bullying revealing negative relationship between cognitive intelligence and bullying, empathy and bullying perpetration, ability to understand and manage other people’s emotions and victimisation. However, such inquiry is limited for Nigeria, hence, this study investigated whether emotional intelligence of in-school adolescents is related to his/her role in bullying interactions, either as a perpetrator, victim, bully-victim or non-involved. Sample was chosen from six schools using stratified random sampling. Self-report inquiry form was used to determine the level of the respondents’ emotional intelligence and the bullying roles. To test the hypotheses, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation was employed. Outcomes of study pointed out varying rates of bullying roles, 43.5% (neutral) 4.4% (bullying perpetration) 13.33% victimisation and 39.05% (bullying-victimisation). It was also disclosed that emotional intelligence has significant association with victimisation, bullying-victimisation and non-involvement but not with bullying perpetration. These findings have implications for bullying prevention and treatment especially for victims and bully-victims. It is recommended that emotional intelligence treatment should be used in assisting victims as well as bully-victims that formed larger percentage of those involved in bullying interaction.Item Association between Emotional Intelligence and Bullying Roles of In-School Adolescents in Ilorin Metropolis(Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, 2018) Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi AbdulqadirStudies mostly from United States and Europe have looked into the relationship among emotion, emotional intelligence and bullying revealing negative relationship between cognitive intelligence and bullying, empathy and bullying perpetration, ability to understand and manage other people’s emotions and victimisation. Inquiries have established causes of sexual dysfunction to include anxiety over affection, relationship tensions and improbable sexual functioning expectations. Thus, considerable explanations abound to presume connection between premarital cohabitation and marital sexual dysfunction which little studies have explored. To determine whether premarital cohabitation predicts sexual dysfunction in later marriage. It also assessed the moderating effect of age, gender and duration of premarital cohabitation on the variables of interest. Data were gathered from two hundred married students (age 21 to 40 years and above) through descriptive survey method using premarital cohabitation and sexual dysfunction scale following a multi- stage procedure. Linear and multiple regressions were employed for analysis. Premarital cohabitation significantly predicts sexual dysfunction in later bonds (F-value of 13.39 significant at 0.00) in 67% of cases (R-square 0.67, beta weight of 0.26 sig at 0.00). The moderating variables predicted sexual dysfunction in later bonds with duration of premarital cohabitation contributing more. Premarital cohabitation strongly predicts sexual dysfunction in later bonds. Counsellors should enlighten youths on negative effects of premarital cohabitation on sexual dysfunction and design strategies to assist victims.Item CONSEQUENCES OF BULLYING BEHAVIOUR ON IN-SCHOOL ADOLESCENTS IN ILORIN METROPOLIS(Department of Educational Management and Counselling, Alhikmah University, Ilorin., 2016) Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi Abdulqadir; MUHAMMAD, Shuaib AbolakaleBullying is a major source of victimization among adolescents which has been associated with violent behaviours and has numerous bio-psychosocial and educational outcomes.
