Abstract

Career development is a life-long process that requires planning for an individual’s success. Previous studies revealed that students at different educational levels have unique career development needs. This study determined the career development needs of college of education students. The study also considered whether the moderating variables of age, course of study, family type, and gender significantly were associated with the career development needs of the respondents. The study adopted a descriptive survey, the correlation type. The multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select 416 respondents aged between 15-30 years. Out of this, 403 retrieved forms were valid for data analysis. The instrument for data collection was a validated questionnaire on Career Development Needs. The study found answer to what the career development needs of colleges of education students were. The findings of the study revealed that the respondents' career development needs include: assistance on ways to manage life and career tasks and information about work-related practices among others. Age, course of study, family type, and gender have no significant association with the career development needs of respondents. Based on the findings, the study recommended that counselors in college counselling centers should organize programs to train students on life skills required for appropriate management of life and career tasks irrespective of their age, family background, gender, and course of study so that they can be equipped in managing their life and career tasks.
