    Beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries perceived causes of poverty and progress of poverty alleviation programme in Ilorin Metropolis.

    The study investigates causes of poverty as perceived by the beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of poverty alleviation programme in llorin metropolis. The concept of poverty and its causes was discussed extensively. Two research questions were raised and answered. Descriptive survey was used in the study. Three hundred and seventy five (375) beneficiaries and three hundred and eighty (380) non-beneficiaries of the poverty alleviation programme constituted sample for the study. The data generated from the study was subjected to statistical analysis of frequency count and percentage as well as mean score. Any figure above means score of 2.5 was considered acceptable decision while below 2.5 was considered as rejected decision on the causes of poverty. Result of the findings revealed that inadequate access to financial assistance, inadequate access to vocational skills, illiteracy and lack of people's participation in development programme were found to be the causes of poverty in llorin metropolis. It was recommended among other that adult literacy programme should be included in future poverty alleviation programme, and the government should wage anti-corruption crusade on the officials of the programme was well as creation of awareness campaign for the people.

    Empowerment and development strategies for the attainment of MDGs in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.

    This paper is on local empowerment development strategies for the attainment of MDGs in Ilorin West Local Government Area. The aim is to provide a formidable basis needed for adopting meaningful policy measures geared towards the empowerment of communities and development strategies for attaining the MDGs. The paper addressed the following issues among which are empowerment and development, the millennium development goals in perspectives, development strategies in empowering the community for the achievement of the MDGs and the challenges faced with its attainment. The paper concludes with the fact that empowerment of communities are needed to achieve the MDGs. Based on this, recommendations made were intensive awareness campaign for the people of the rural areas in florin West Local Government. the need for collaborative efforts between the government and community based association and extension of MDG programmes to the identified areas by the government.

    Literacy education as a tool for empowering women in Asa Local Government Kwara State, Nigeria. Journal of Capital Development in Behavioural Sciences.

    The paper examined the issue of literacy as a tool for empowering women in Asa Local Government area of Kwara State. The paper was premised on the fact that when women are literate, they will be more active in their various communities. Their voices will be heard as opposed to their faces being seen and this will instill in them the confidence to make progress in their daily living. The study made use ofdescriptive survey design, with 21 1 non-literates women randomly selected as sample within the local government. A 10 item questionnaire was designed to elicit responses on literacy education and empowerment. The data collected were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistical test at 0.05 level of significance. The study discovered that literacy is a tool for fighting poverty, hunger diseases, and ignorance and when all these are fought, an average woman becomes empowered to participate actively in issues of development in her home and community. The study, therefore, recommended that women should be encouraged to enroll for literacy education programme while, governments at all levels should make efforts to fund literacy programme.
