Item COMMUNICATION REVOLUTION AND SOCIAL CHANGE IN NIGERIA: SOME MATTERS ARISISNG(Department of Sociology, Osun State University, Osogbo (Okuku Campus), 2017-06) Muhammed, Abubakar Yinusa; Kadiri, Kehinde Kadijat; Oluyemi, JosephIt is difficult today to read a newspaper or watch the news without noticing the changes that continually affect the world. The Middle East, Central America, Southern Africa and many other countries demonstrate social transition and transformation in many dimensions. Information revolution has come to transform the structure of many societies, particularly as they free the human mind, open new vistas in knowledge and allow technologies to increasingly take on human qualities. The impact of the development of the information society on a nation’s development and social change is now a question of discussion. It is against this background that this paper examined communication revolution and social change in Nigeria. The paper concluded that new communication technologies as tools for Nigeria’s socio-economic transformation have been drawn mainly from the experiences and exploits of western industrialized countries. In spite of the little progress that Nigeria and Africa has made in the age of new communication technology, many people still hold the fear that communication revolution has come with a lot of problems.Item Constraints and Challenges of Reporting Development News in the Nigerian Press(Department of Mass Communication, Delta State University., 2009-10) Kadiri, Kehinde KadijatAvailable literature shows that the Nigerian press has always been preoccupied with politics and sensational news and that it is giving little attention to development matters. Specific kinds of information which satisfies the needs and wants of the people can contribute to economic and social progress of a country. The need for Nigerian newspapers to report development news therefore stimulates the interest of this study. This study explores the roles of the press in the development of the society. The study shows that the press is not making enough contribution to the development of the society as set out by development journalism and media development theory. The factors that prevent the press from adequately reporting development news are examined and solutions are also proffered. The study concludes that the press must choose the best way to approach their weaknesses and fortify their strengths.Item CONSTRAINTS AND CHALLENGES OF THE MEDIA IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA(Journal of Sustainable Development in Africa, 2015) Kadiri, Kehinde Kadijat; Muhammed, Yinusa A.; Raji, Addullateef; Sulaiman, Abdul-Rasheed L.In many ways, mass media seems to be associated with development. The attainment of sustainable development depends on socio-economic and political environment where the role of mass media is important. The media are meant to serve both elite and those at the grassroot levels. They are expected to focus their time and resources on sensitive issues that matter most to the people. They produce stories that help to make sense of, and sensibilities about social order. Media houses do focus on policy and always see the relevance of their stories to policy bringing about development. They are supposed to bring to the limelight what the people need and what they expect from the government. The media houses are supposed to show case news that are crucial to man’s effort to gain a greater control of his life. They are expected to explain, interpret and comment on the implication of events and issues especially as they relate to development. However, certain factors are hindering the ability of the press to carry out some of their development goals in the society. It is against this background that this paper examines the concept of development as well as the challenges and constraints that hider the media from performing their sustainable development roles in Nigeria. It concludes that the role that mass media play in sustaining the development of a society cannot be overemphasized; any media house must strive to live up to the expectations of the people no matter the constraints and challenges that might stand in its ways.Item DEVELOPMENT NEWS IN NIGERIAN NEWSPAPERS: A CONTENT ANALYSIS ON THE PUNCH AND NEW NIGERIAN NEWSPAPERS(Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin, Nigeria., 2011-07) Kadiri, Kehinde KadijatAvailable literature shows that the Nigerian press had always been preoccupied with politics and that it was giving little attention to development matter. Specific kinds of information which satisfies the needs and desires of the people can contribute to economic and social progress of a country. The need for Nigerian newspaper to report development news therefore stimulated the interest of this study. The study focused on the privately-owned Punch and the state-owned New Nigerian newspaper for coverage of development news in Nigeria between the period of June, 2007 and May 2008. The method of content analysis was used for this study. The study reveals that development matters are poorly covered by the two Nigerians newspaper. However, the state-owned newspaper, the New Nigerian was relatively doing better than the privately-owned, Punch, in the coverage of development news such as agricultural practice, public health and welfare and literacy and education at the detriment of others in the two newspaper. It is recommended among others, that strictly development –focused newspaper should be established. In addition, the existing ones should train and retrain staff on the need for adequate coverage of rural development issues.Item Factors Associated with the Adoption of Sexual Abstinence and Contraception Among Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Students in Abeokuta, Nigeria(Springer, Singapore., 2015) Kadiri, Kehinde Kadijat; Ahmad, Mohd Kharie; Mustaffa, Che SuThe growing rate of risky sexual behaviour among young adults contributes significantly to the spread of STI epidemic in Nigeria. As a result of this, this study explores the factors associated with the adoption of sexual abstinence and contraception among Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, students aged between 18 and 25 years. An in-depth interview was conducted among 28 students. The research reveals that young adults have a good knowledge of contraception and abstinence as a method for the prevention of STIs. However, some of them are still involved in risky sexual behaviour. The study identified some ‘protective’ and ‘risk’ factor behaviours that have the tendency of resulting into positive and negative health outcomes, respectively. A good understanding of the protective factors will avail STI campaign planners on how to develop effective intervention that targets these factors known to promote abstinence and condom usage behaviour and its outcomes. The study concludes that there is a need for the implementation of an all-encompassing integrated multi-sectoral approach which will utilise all the various stakeholders in providing a comprehensive abstinence sexuality education for young adults.Item Knowledge Attitude and Sources of Information among HIV Positive Patients at a Federal Medical Centre in Nigeria(Department of Mass Communication, Delta State University, 2015-10) Kadiri, Kehinde Kadijat; Ahmad, Mohd Khairie; Mustaffa, Che Su; Omopupa, Kamal TundeGlobally, Nigeria has the second largest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the world. However, limited studies have focused attention on the knowledge, attitude and sources of information of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Nigeria. This study explored the depth of knowledge, attitude and sources of information among HIV/AIDS positive patients at Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Nigeria. The in-depth interview among the PLWHA revealed that they have different misconceptions on HIV/AIDS prior to the discovery of their health status. Also, the PLWHA have vague information on HIV/AIDS before testing positive to the infection. Therefore, they considered the information that they received through the medical personnel in the hospital, support groups, HIV seminars and workshops as better channels for up-to-date information on HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, information disseminated through the traditional mass media was regarded as vague and obsolete. Some informants do not use condoms during sexual intercourse with their spouses and lovers because of their inability to disclose their status to their partners for fear of stigmatisation. The study concludes that there is a need for strategically designed HIV/AIDS campaign to meet the sensitive needs of PLWHA. It is expedient for mass media to strategically design HIV/AIDS messages for PLWHA in Nigeria through partnership with medical personnel and support groups.Item MANAGING CULTURAL AND ETHICAL VARIABILITY IN THE GLOBALIZED WORK ENVIRONMENT(Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, 2012-09) Mustapha, Lambe Kayode; Kadiri, Kehinde KadijatCommunication is a key variable in the organization of human relations at individual, group and societal levels. This study was conducted towards understanding the positive and negative marital values and practices in Nigeria and how they can improve HIV/AIDS preventive campaigns. In-depth interviews were conducted on married young people who reside in Abeokuta town in South West, Nigeria. The first and the second categories were HIV positive and HIV negative respectively. The findings show that there are some marital values and practices which promote risky sexual behaviour among men which leads to HIV/AIDS while some curtails sexual excesses particularly among females. Some of the female informants indicated that some marital values and practices were promoting social cohesion and unity while others were having negative influence on their physical and psychological health. Majority of the informants testified that cultural values and practices gave married men the permissiveness to involve in extra marital affairs. The consequences of the above scenario make more women to be vulnerable to HIV/AIDS than their male counterparts. These findings show that inculcating marital virtues into HIV/AIDS preventive communication campaigns would reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among married couple. This study concludes that there is a need to specifically design marital sensitive HIV/AIDS preventive campaigns specifically for married individuals.Item MASS MEDIA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEMOCRACY AND DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA(Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Clarion, Pennsylvania, 2015) Kadiri, Kehinde Kadijat; Muhammed, Yinusa A.; Raji, Addullateef; Sulaiman, Abdul-Rasheed L.The role of mass media for sustainable democracy cannot be overemphasized. Although, the primary responsibilities of the media is to entertain without slander or libel, inform based on accurate facts and educate on current relevant issues. Apart from these roles, development scholars and professionals have widely recognized the utility of mass media in the sustenance of viable democracy. Democracy is the most popular form of government particularly because it guarantees popular participation. Though, it recognizes and guarantees individual participation, it also derives its synergy from other institutions like the mass media. The mass media are supplying the political information that voters base their decision on. They identify problems in the society and serve as a medium for deliberation. It is against this background that this paper addressed the factor of mass media for sustainable democracy in Nigeria and concluded that the mass media have significant role to play in establishing stability and security as necessary environment for sustainable democracy in Nigeria. The mass media can be effective in establishing a good atmosphere were growth and development can take place, particularly in the elimination of ignorance which often leads to conflicts, especially in politics.Item Religion and STIs Campaigns: The Perceptions of the Nigerian Youths(Universiti Putra Malaysia Press, 2015) Kadiri, Kehinde Kadijat; Ahmad, Mohd Khairie; Mustaffa, Che SuReligious constraints on sexuality may have consequences for the transmission of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Recognising that several religious tenets may have the positive effect of reducing the prevalence of STIs if incorporated into STI preventive campaigns prompted the decision to carry out this research. This study was conducted to understand how religion tenets can be effectively incorporated into STI preventive campaigns in Nigeria. An in-depth interview was conducted with 32 young people from the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria. The result of the study showed that religiouslymotivated young people were likely to avoid engaging in sexual practices as a result of their religious tenets. Informants with strong religious faith mentioned that the virtue of temperance assisted them in curtailing their sexual desires thus reducing their chances of exposure to risky sexual behaviour. Most of the informants mentioned that religion was one aspect of culture that could be used to prevent young people from being involved in risky sexual behaviour or pre-marital sex. The obvious implication arising from this position suggested that the inclusion of religion and the virtues they taught in STI campaigns would result in more positive STI behavioural change among young people. The conclusion is that religion as an attribute of culture can be used to discourage a large number of young people from becoming involved in risky sexual behaviour that leads to STIs.Item Social Media Usage for Mental Health Information among University of Ilorin Undergraduates(Social & Digital Media Discourse, 2020) Kadiri, Kehinde Kadijat; Haroon-Sulyman, Shakirat Oluwatosin; Kehinde, Adetola Ayotunde; Adejumo, Phebian Boluwatife; Udende, PatrickThe increased deterioration of mental health among undergraduates, its causes, and viable panaceas are becoming an academic concern and a populated area of study among researchers worldwide. Amidst this is a bone of contention among scholars on the relevance of social media and its role in improving or deteriorating the mental health of undergraduates. Social media and its affiliated applications may either depreciate mental health or improve it among undergraduates. Thus, through an exploratory qualitative research design, this study investigated social media usage for mental health information among University of Ilorin undergraduates to understand the consequences of social media use on their mental health. The study purposively sampled thirty undergraduates using the in-depth interview as the instrument for data collection. Findings revealed that there is high usage of social media among the undergraduates. Based on the findings, the high usage of social media is borne out of the need to gratify their mental health needs, using it to seek mental health assistance. While there is an attestation by the undergraduates that social media usage has positive consequences on their mental health, the platform is found to predispose them to depression and low self-esteem. The study recommended that mental healthcare providers should focus more on mental health advocacy on social media as this would help to give credibility to mental health information available on social media.Item Social Media Usage for Mental Health Information among University of Ilorin Undergraduates(Social & Digital Media Discourse, 2020) Kadiri, Kehinde Kadijat; Haroon-Sulyman, Shakirat Oluwatosin; Kehinde, Adetola Ayotunde; Adejumo, Phebian Boluwatife; Udende, PatrickThe increased deterioration of mental health among undergraduates, its causes, and viable panaceas are becoming an academic concern and a populated area of study among researchers worldwide. As a result of which this study explores STIs knowledge and treatment seeking behaviour among University of Ilorin students aged between 18-25 years. An in-depth interview was conducted among forty students. The study reveals that young adults have a good knowledge of HIV/AIDS but few of them have little knowledge of only gonorrhoea. It was noted that the informants still have a lot of ambiguous information that relates to STIs. They also perceived risky sexual behaviour is common among their peers. When they had STIs, most of them prefer to get self-medications from traditional healers or patronize road side pharmacy. Also, they do not like to go to medical practitioners because of stigmatization by medical practitioners, lack of confidentiality, slow service and low cost. It is recommended that a multi-sectoral effort of young peoples’ families, Non-Governmental Organisations, traditional medical practitioners, media practitioners and health professionals towards improving STIs knowledge as well as promoting and encouraging preventive as well as effective treatment practices must be made available for this population. The study concludes that there is a need for the implementation of an all-encompassing integrated multi-sectoral approach which will utilise all the various stakeholders in providing a comprehensive abstinence sexuality education for young adults.Item Twitter Discourse on the Pre-Presidential Election Campaign in Nigeria(Jurnal the Messenger, 2020-07-31) Kadiri, Kehinde Kadijat; Kehinde, Adetola Ayotunde; Haroon-Sulyman, Shakirat OluwatosinCitizens’ political participation and engagement on various social media handles have made it necessary for scholars to investigate and understand the potentials inherent in the political engagement and discourse of individual citizens. Hence, the study examined Twitter discourse on the 2019 pre-presidential election campaign in Nigeria. Purposive sampling technique with thematic textual research method was used to thematically analyse tweets based on the research questions. Findings from the study showed that the kind of engagement made or done by Nigerians regarding the 2019 pre-presidential election campaigns was based on the topic, with most topics being met with sarcasm. The sarcasm found in the tweets pointed to the way Nigerians react in a situation that they have no way of rectifying. Also, findings from the study showed that celebrity tweet gets more engagement compared to tweets made by unpopular tweeps. Conclusively, the study found that the level of discourse on Twitter regarding Nigeria’s 2019 pre-presidential elections was very rich and participatory this implies that Nigerians have a high propensity to relate on social media as their rate of responses as well as their frequency of responses remained high throughout the election campaign period which to a large extent predicts real-life events.Item Young People’s Perception of HIV/ AIDS Campaign in South-West Nigeria(Malaysian Journal of Media Studies, 2015) Kadiri, Kehinde Kadijat; Ahmad, Mohd Khairie; Mustaffa, Che SuSince global attention was drawn to the identification and spread of HIV/AIDS in 1983, the media has been used as the primary vehicle for both formal and informal messages on the dreaded infection. However, limited studies have explored the perception of the targeted audience on HIV/AIDS campaigns. As a result, this audience research have been used to explore the perception of young people towards HIV/AIDS messages. An in-depth interview was conducted among 31 young people who were divided into two main categories. The first category were HIV positive patients from the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State, while the second category were HIV negative students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Uniquely, the study revealed that the majority of young people have negative perceptions on HIV messages that they were exposed to. Both categories of informants argued that campaign planners never involved them in the conceptualisation of the HIV/AIDS messages. They also complained that they were stereotyped by the portrayal of HIV/AIDS as a youth disease and in-like manner that the HIV/AIDS campaigns lack creativity and up-to-date information. Furthermore, the HIV positive informants vehemently complained about the negative stereotype that the mass media gave the general populace about the infection. Hence, this study concluded that in order for HIV/AIDS preventive communication campaign to be effective, there is an urgent need for campaign planners to improve and incorporate these negative perceptions in the concept of future HIV/AIDS campaigns in Nigeria.
