    AWARENESS AND DISPOSITION OF NIGERIAN POLICE TO FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROTECTION OF NIGERIAN CITIZENS

    Human rights, which lends credence to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, aims at protecting the rights of every individual regardless of age, race, religion and sex. Several indices, today point to the fact that these rights are being violated especially by the Nigerian Police. This study, therefore, investigated the awareness and disposition of the Nigerian citizens. A descriptive survey research method was employed for the study. The sample size of 120 Police men and women were selected through simple random sampling techniques. 20 Police officers were selected each from divisions A-F in Ilorin. An instrument tagged “Questionnaire on Awareness and Disposition of Nigerian Police to Human Rights Protection of Nigerian Citizens (QDNPHRPNC)” was used. Findings of the study reveals that the majority of the police are aware of human rights issues while they have a bid attitude to it. Qualification influenced their disposition to human rights protection of citizens while working experience did not influence their disposition to it. Based on the findings, it was recommended that there is the need to orientate and re-orients and re-orientate the police on civic learning, especially, human rights should be published and made available to police officers and human rights commissions should also intensify their efforts in checkmating the excessiveness of police on human rights protection of citizen.

    HUMAN RIGHTS: IMPERATIVE FOR GIRL-CHILD EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

    Human Rights education x-rays the rights of citizen especially the girl-child in the community, society and the world at large. It assists to develop the girl-child holistically in her social well being, respect for human rights and enhancing her right to education. It also centered on universal values, equal opportunities, respect for diversity and non-discrimination, equality, protection of human rights at all levels, developing solidarity, prevents conflict, sharing of knowledge, impacts skills and moulds attitudes in both formal and informal contexts. The paper therefore examined the goals, objectives, importance of human rights education for the girl child. This is based on the fact that knowledge and understanding of human rights education will be an essential tool not for only girl-child and the entire citizen to survive as an entity in all spheres of life and to have relative complete peace in our country Nigeria. The education of human right should be made compulsory for all and sundry in both formal and informal education as this will assist to develop the girl-child and the entire populace irrespective of gender, race, creed, ethnicity, status and ability which will curb conflict and mould the attitude of people towards one another generally.

    Influence of Class Size on Junior Secondary School Students' Academic Performance in Ilorin South Local Government Area

    This study examined the influence of class size on junior secondary school students performance in Ilorin South Local Government Area. Also it investigated whether class size had influence on academic performance of students in on the basis of gender and school types. Descriptive research of survey type was adopted in this study. Sample of 200 respondents was drwan for this study. The instrument used to gather data for the study was Performance Test Pack (PTP) adapted for use from the junior questions. Demographic data of the respondents were analysed using simple counts and percentages while the hypotheses formulated were tested using inferential statistics of t-test at 0.05 alpha level. This study concluded that students in normal class size performed better than their counterparts in large class size. It also showed that class size has influence on academic performance of students on the basis of gender and school type. Male students performed better than female students while private school students performed better than their public school counterparts. It was therefore recommended that: the state government should endeavour to implement and monitor studnents-teacher ratio, school management should endeavour to create an enabling environment that will enhance learning for both sexes and government should increase her monitoring of school for teachers to put in their best.

    School environment, like any other open society, is an avenue where series of conflicts often manifests as school-staff and students relate on daily basis to discharge their social and academic-business. When many of the conflicts are not adequately managed, they result in serious school based violence. Thus, this paper presents a systematic analysis of how elements of non-verbal communication among school-staff and students can be managed to prevent occurrence of academic and administrative conflicts that can hamper achieving the goals for establishing schools.

    Parental Opinions on the Effects of Street Hawking on the Development of the Youths in Ilorin Metropolis

    The Study was structured as a survey to investigate what parents in Ilorin Metropolis percieved as causes and consequences of street hawking on development of youthful human resources in Nigeria. From the population of parents across 5 randomly selected streets in the metropolis, a total of 300 parents were sampled using cluster sampling technique. The sampled parents were further stratified on the basis of educational status (educated and illiterate) and family type (polygamous and monogamous). The researcher used questionnaire called Causes and consequences of street hawking to collect the data. The instrument was validated. Percentage was used to answer the research Questions 1 and 2 while t-test statistic was used to test the raised hypothesis. Findings revealed that 78% of respondents blamed street hawking on parental poverty.

    Parents and Teachers Percieved Factors Hindering Students Enrolment in Basic Education in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State

    Abstract This paper examines parents and teachers perceived factors hindering student enrolment in Basic Education in Ilorin metropolis. The study adopted survey method of research to find out the parents’ and teachers’ perceived factors that hindered pupils’ enrolment in basic education. Cluster sampling technique was used to sample 400 respondents consisting of 200 teachers and 200 educated parents. Also, purposive sampling technique was used to sample 200 illiterate parents; this made the total number of respondents for the study to be 600. A researcher made questionnaire titled Enrolment in Universal Basic Education (UBE) was used to elicit the needed data from the respondents. The data were analyzed using percentages and chi-square to answer the raised research questions. However, significant difference exist in the way teachers and educated parents on one hand and educated parents and illiterate parents on the other hand perceived the influence of this factor of inadequate sensitization on pupils’ enrolment in basic education. It was concluded that adequate sensitization of the public on UBE should be embarked upon for the success of the program. Thus it was recommended among other things that government should intensify its efforts towards getting Nigerians informed about UBE programs and the benefits acquirable from enrolling their children in schools; discourage early marriages among others.

    SOCIAL DEPRIVATIONS AND ACCESS TO LIFE-SAVING FACILITIES AMONG TERTIARY STUDENTS IN ILORIN, KWARA STATE.

    Abstract The study empirically finds out incidences, causes and impacts of social deprivation among undergraduates in public and private Universities in Ilorin, Kwara State. From the population of undergraduates in the three randomly selected federal, state and private universities located in the state capital, random sampling technique was used to sample a total of 645 respondents out of which only 409 said they felt socially deprived. Data was collected using a questionnaire instrument which had four sections. The collected data was analyzed using percentages. Findings shows that 65.36% of undergraduates in federal universities, 81.81% of those in state university and 40.21% of private university of the three types of university said they had been deprived against in all areas of their lives. It was recommended that government should come up with policies that can eradicate social deprivations among tertiary students in Nigeria.
