Item Assessment of Public Awareness towards Corporate Social Responsibility Practices of Organizations in Nigeria: A study of Ilorin Metropolis(Department of Business Administration, Kaduna State University, Kaduna, Nigeria., 2015-06) Gunu, Umar; . Lawal, Azeez.T.Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in recent times has captured the interest of different bodies, from the academia, formal and informal sectors to the government. The general public is also concerned about the adoption of CSR by organizations as a responsible way to doing business in the 21st century. The study examined the level of public awareness towards CSR practices of organizations in Nigeria with Ilorin metropolis as case study. Modal instance sampling technique was used to select the study sample while the results were presented using descriptive statistics; the hypotheses were tested by the use of chi-square. It was concluded that despite appreciable awareness of the concept of CSR by(53%) respondents, the awareness of the activities of organizations in CSR is still inadequate by members of host communities as only few (36%) respondents can recognize CSR projects undertaken by organizations within their community. It is recommended that organizations should improve on more CSR activities and its disclosure to the public.Item Employees’ Training, Work Commitment and Turnover Intention: A survey of Employees in Selected Hotels in Abuja Metropolis.(Department of Marketing, Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria., 2015-06) Gunu, Umar; Yere, Kizito, John; Tsado, EmmanuelIn this present century, strive for competitive advantage is one of the most important trends among the business organizations. However, this cannot be achieved without having competent employees. Furthermore, employee’s commitment and turnover rate may be a barrier. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between training, employee’s commitment, and turn over intention. The study used primary data which were sourced using questionnaire. Simple random sampling technique was to select the respondents. Frequency table and chart were used to analyse the data, and chi – square was used to test the hypothesis. Findings from the study indicate that 29% of the respondents agree and 12% of them strongly agree that they will remain with the organization for over 10 years after being trained. Also, the result of the test of hypothesis shows that employee’s commitment and turnover intention depends on training. The study therefore concludes based on its findings that employee’s training, apart from its potentials of increasing performance can also reduce employee’s turnover rate. It was thus recommended that hotel managers should make training of employees a major priority.Item Entrepreneurship in the context of the Nigerian Business Environment.(Department of Business Administration, University Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2013) Gunu, UmarThe interconnection between entrepreneurship and environment has attracted major discourse in entrepreneurial literature. This study emphasised theoretical context of entrepreneurship environment. The Supply Side school and Demand Side school theoretical perspectives were reviewed showing the relevance of environment to entrepreneurial activity. Secondary data were used for the paper. Government Policies related to entrepreneurship were examined with a motive of pointing out the importance of the policies to entrepreneurial development of the nation. It was discovered that some of the policy programmes were either inactive due to lack of interest by successive governments or as a result of inadequate resources for their sustenance. It is recommended that comprehensive audit of entrepreneurial policy programmes should be carried out to avoid duplication and conflict in the area of operation and continuous education and enlightenment programmes, on the opportunities that abound in the environment amongst others.Item Entreprenueship in Underdeveloped Economies: A Study of Nigeria(Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Warsaw, Poland, 2017) Kasum, Abubakar Sadiq; Gunu, UmarThe study investigated the availability of the environment for and the extent to which individuals and groups are able to recognize/create opportunity for providing goods and services; and the extent to which they are able to utilize such opportunities. The study collected primary data about the environment for entrepreneurship development in Nigeria, the extent and nature of opportunity creation and the prospect for carrying through innovations in the country. The data were collected from entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship professionals, using a well-structured questionnaire administered to a sample of 360 respondents, drawn from among the groups. The responses were analyzed using Kruskal Wallis and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Tests. The study revealed that Nigerians are innovative and enterprising. It also revealed that infrastructural facilities, funding, and entrepreneurship education are significant impediments. The study also showed that economic growth in Nigeria is influenced by entrepreneurship growth, therefore the slow growth in entrepreneurship development in Nigeria contributed to the underdeveloped status of the economy.Item Evaluation of Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria’s Operation.(College of Management Sciences, Al – Hikmah University, Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, 2012) Gunu, Umar; . TSADO, mmanuel E.Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) is one of the agencies established for starting, resuscitating and growing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in Nigeria as a means of rural industrialization, poverty eradication, job creation and sustainable livelihood. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the operations of SMEDAN in resuscitating, facilitating and promoting the access of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to all the resources required for their growth. The research employed library and desk research. Therefore, secondary data were used for this study, and were sourced from SMEDAN books of records as well as related journals. The findings of the study revealed that a total of 195,326 people were trained at the various programmes on capacity building organised by SMEDAN across the country in 2005. It was also reported that Oyo State had the highest number of participants at the workshop/training on poultry farming. In the same vein, Lagos State had the highest number of participants at the workshop on mobile phone repairs. The study concludes that owing to the increased rate of unemployment in Nigeria, SMEDAN has serious challenges ahead. It was recommended that efforts should be intensified by the Government towards the provision of adequate infrastructural facilities and creation of conducive business environment.Item The Impact of E-banking on Customers’ Satisfaction: An Empirical study of ATM.(College of Social and Management Sciences, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji, Nigeria, 2010-09) Gunu, Umar; Aun, ISAAC IORTIMBIRThe first giant step in the revolution of electronic banking was the computerization of financial institutions which made marketing of banking services a unique one. With this development, there is a gap of acceptability of electronic banking between potential adopters and early adopters’ belief for adopting and continued usage of e-banking. This study investigated the adoption and continued usage of ATM banking in Nigeria The general objective of the study was to examine customers’ satisfaction of electronic banking. The specific objectives were the determination of the acceptability of ATMs as a delivery channel of bank services and customer satisfaction of ATM services provided by Nigerian banks. The study employed a case study method. The primary data that were used for the research were generated through questionnaires administered to respondents by the researchers. Convenience sampling was used to select the respondents. The research variables were measured by a Likert scale. Data were analysed by use of tables, chi-square and coefficient of contingency. There is a significant relationship between ATMs as a form of service and customer satisfaction. ATMs are more acceptable than Tellers in the delivery of banking services in Nigerian banking industry. The percentage of respondents who are users of ATMs is high, therefore, the study recommends the following: even distribution of ATMs for ease of accessibility; language barrier should worked on to ensure that customers are able to interact in at least one of the major three Nigerian languages, and advertisement of other products on the screen of ATMs.Item An Investigation into Small Medium Scale Enterprises funding and Nigerian Stock Market: A study of Ilorin Metropolis(Faculty of Management Sciences, IBB University Lapai, Niger State, Nigeria, 2009-03) Gunu, UmarThe efforts of small and medium scale enterprises to grow, modernise and expand are being constrained by inability to mobilise funds for expansion.in recognition of this need, the second-tier securities market was established to provide easy access to investible funds. The general objectives of the study is the identification of the constraints faced by SMEs using the Nigerian Stock Exchange Market and to find out why small and medium scale enterprises do not use the second-tier security market. The study uses guided questions to elicit information from 50 randomly selected small and medium scale enterprises in Ilorin. Simple tabulation, percentages and cost benefit analysis are used to the data. The findings in the study show that major constraint in sourcing for funds from NSE by small and medium scale enterprises is the listing constraints. Some unlisted SMEs entertain fears about dividend payments and other expense such as hiring of skilled manpower. It is suggested that government should encourage listed SMEs by way of providing necessary incentives such as reduction of quotation fee, reduction of listing fee, reduction of years of required trading record etcItem Social Capital and Growth: Perspective from Consumer Goods Sector in South – West, Nigeria.(Department of Business administration, Al- Hikmah University, Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, 2016-06) Gunu, Umar; Ajayi, Oluseyi; Aun, Isaac I.; Oyeniran, Ishola WasiuThe impact of socio capital on firm’s growth, especially in Nigeria, is still in doubt among stakeholders. The study examines the impact of social capital on firm’s growth in food sub-sector of the Consumer Goods sector quoted on the floor of Nigeria Stock Exchange, based on a sample 388 management staff of the firms arrived at with Rakesh (2013) sample size formula. The study applied multiple regression analysis to analyse the data collected from the selected sample. The results show that mutual trust, level of education and involvement in social activity have positive statistically significant impacts on firms’ growth with coefficient of 0.783 and 0.135 respectively. The study therefore concluded that social capital has a positive significant impact on firms’ growth in consumer goods sector; based on the Findings, it was recommended that managers and entrepreneurs should promote mutual trust, get involved in social activities and associate with stakeholders in their industry to maximise the windows of opportunities and to grow the firm accordingly for the benefit of all stakeholders.
