    Fungicidal effects of Ocimum gratissium and Vernonia amygdalina on fungi associated with rhizosphere and rhizoplane of Capsicum annuum L.

    This research work was carried out to test the antifungal effects of leaf extract of Ocimumgratissimum and Vernonia amygdalina on fungi associated with rhizoplane and rhizosphere of Capsicum annuum. Soil samples were collected from the rhizoplane and rhizosphere ofCapsicum annuum at Gerewu, Ilorin, Kwara State. The soil samples were analyzed using serial dilution and spread plate methods. The leaf extract of each of the test plant was prepared using ethanol as the extractant. The antifungal potential of leaf extract of Ocimum gratissimum and Vernonia amygdalina were tested on the isolated fungi using poisoned food method. From the rhizosphere, four fungi were isolated viz: Aspergillus niger, A. oryzae, Paecilomyces varioti and Saccharomyces cerevisae. Only Aspergillus niger, A. clavatus, and Paecilomyces varioti were isolated from the rhizoplane. Comparatively, the antifungal potential of Ocimum gratissimum in the inhibition of mycelial growth of the isolated fungi was observed to be higher than that of Vernonia amygdalina .

    Isolation and Physiological Studies of Fungi Associated with Post-Harvest Diseases of Selected Solanaceous Fruits in Ilorin Markets, Nigeria

    This study was carried out to determine the fungi associated with diseases of some solanaceous crops stored in selected markets in Ilorin. The diseased sample fruits of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), Pepper (Capsicum annuum) and Eggplant (Solanum melongena) were randomly collected and isolation of fungi from the samples was carried out using Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) and Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA). Pathogenicity test and physiological studies of the isolates were performed. Total of seven fungi, Aspergillus niger, A. terreus, A. oryzae, Colletotrichum coccodes, C. capsici, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Penicillum funiculosum and Rhizopus Stolonifer were isolated in all the sampled fruits and C. coccodes was present in all fruit samples. The results from pathogenicity test showed that C. coccodes was the most pathogenic fungus. The mycelia dry weights of C. coccodes in various media were 1.04g in glucose, 1.16g in sucrose and 1.13g in fructose. It was revealed that isolated fungi showed differential ability in utilizing different carbon sources.
