Today, Open Access (OA) scholarly publishing offers free access and wide dissemination for research findings anytime and anywhere as an additional value for scholarly content. Despite the potentials of OA publishing, its adoption and use is still low. This paper determines factors influencing the adoption and use of OA publishing by academic staff in universities in Nigeria using an adapted Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use Technology (UTAUT). The study applies methodological triangulation by combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. The empirical data were collected from 317 academic staff in universities in southwest Nigeria. The questionnaire forms were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM-SPSS) 19.0 version to generate descriptive statistics, Analysis of Variance, and Hierarchical Multiple Regression. Thematically, analysis also applies to the interviews. The results show that awareness, attitude, performance expectancy, Internet self-efficacy, and facilitating conditions significantly influenced the adoption and use of OA publishing. The study also reveals that due to lack of OA policy, most of the respondents did not know about OA. The findings further establish that all predictors and moderating variables jointly contributed 64.4% total variance towards the adoption and use of OA publishing. One of the implications of this study is that there is a need for adequate facilities to support adoption and use of OA publishing. The findings inform the proposed framework for improving and evaluating the adoption and use of OA publishing. The findings also have theoretical, societal, and methodological significance to all stakeholders.Item Emerging issue in open access initiatives in Africa.(IGI Global., 2013) Bashorun, M.T; Sanni, I.L; Isah, AbdulmuminAccess to scholarly communication in the 21st Century has been greatly enhanced with the emergence of Open Access initiatives the world over, This new trend has contributed immensely to the development of globally communication system. Reference service has become a trendy method of promoting access and wide dissemination of information to library patrons. The traditional face-to-face and armchair system where the library only physically consults or is consulted within its own walls or even the confines of the institution, has no place in modern reference service. This study, therefore, evaluates reference services in the era of social media in academic library of National Open University, Nigeria (NOUN). It examines awareness and level of usage of online reference services available to students. The study uses questionnaire to collect data from students, while face-to-face interview was used to collect data from a librarian in the selected centres. The study applies random sampling to select participants while purposive sampling was used to select a librarian. The study analyzes the data using IBM-SPSS version 20.0. Findings revealed that students are aware that their university libraries are on social media networks but are still not familiar with most of reference services. Ask-a-Librarian, Facebook and Twitter were ranked as the most preferred methods for conveying online reference services. That online reference service was indicated as more supreme than traditional desk reference service because communication has no geographical barrier with a reference librarian and is easily accessible. The implications of the present research, although literature on evaluation of reference service in tertiary education does exist, studies on assessment of reference service in digital era by students are scarce and divergent. This research sheds light on this essential subject by intensely aiding the understanding of various social media for educational purposes. The study concluded that the intervention of modern and accessible social media tools in reference service make significant differences in access and dissemination of information to library patrons.Item The evolution of electronic publishing: a literature review(2013-04-30) Bashorun, M.TInformation Technology has changed the way information is processed, stored and disseminated.
